Hopefully somebody knows the answer to this one. Is there a way to create an animated billboard using NWN2 visual effects? I.e. display a sequence of images from a texture file in some pre-determined order.

Thanks. Unfortunately, all that tells me is how to create the texture. What I'm missing is the next step, which is setting up the effect files to play it back.
The Old Vault ID appears to be incorrect: 78 is the ID for ScribeScroll Fix.

78 is the ID as it's recorded in my saved copy of that file from the old Vault. The entry on the new Vault is missing its screenshot, which I have, and the paragraph formatting that the original page has.

Aha! The vault ID is correct but the category is different. It should be under 'tutorials'. Unfortunately that isn't a valid menu pick.
I fixed the format and added the image.

If someone has a suitable image sequence, I could try it out and perhaps write up a more detailed tutorial. I was thinking of doing something like this at one point.

I experimented with animated textures for creating flags, until 'I am Death Come for Thee' created the animated flag-creature (which was 1000% better, give or take a few percentage points). It's a long and tedious process, for which you'll be rewarded with about a second of animation (if that).

I have extensive experience with the long, tedious process of animation, but I'm quite good at doing it as efficiently as possible.

isnt that what the animated texture property in vfx (particle emitter) editor is for?

Yes - that's how I created my experimental flag effects. The downside of particle emitter effects is that they're always translucent, so my animated flags looked like they were made of chiffon. I haven't had much experience creating billboard effects, so I can't verify whether they allow animated textures. Camb's vault submission suggests they do.

Animated textures: better zombies?

Yes, there was a picture of a maggot pile model posted in the NWN custom content forums. I couldn't help but think what it would look like if you UV-mapped it just right (so the maggots would move along bands) and then put in UV scrolling... ![]()

If this results in the peanut butter jelly time gif in a module, I'm voting that module down. Just warning you mod makers. ![]()

If you are still interested, there appear to be some sequential caustics textures available at the bottom of this page:

Perhaps it could be useful for a water-themed magic portal?

The link gave me an error, but I got to the content by removing the "index.htm". I've downloaded the caustics. They look like a good test subject.

That link needs an L on the end (.HTML rather than .HTM).

I was wondering if you had any success with the effect?
Ed.: Actually there are some animation filters in Gimp. When I have a little time I'm going to try playing around with those and see if I can get a suitable effect.

Using GIMP I was able to create an animated graphic (in the manner of the Song Portal visual effect) using a custom image. It's a first attempt so there's a few problems with the masking and animation speed, but there's a definite wavy animation effect in the image. (You'll have to picture it in your mind.
) It took less than a half hour to do once I got the technique down.

Tutorial published. If anybody tries to reproduce this, can you let me know if the steps in the tutorial are clear? Thanks!

Okay I massaged and refined the text a little bit. I don't think it needs to be perfect, just understandable.
