Eh, achievements are meaningless to me in this regard, don't really care if a character grants it or not. Him not granting it isn't really a reason to not consider him a romantic option, he's just a different romantic option (clarifying here that I DO consider him a romance).

But imo, Tallis is just as fulfilling in that regard (more so actually), even if its just a series of flirts that doesn't technically lead anywhere (it could do so in the future if we go by certain info elsewhere...). Besides for many people a chaste romance is just as unfilfilling anyway.

So err, I'm sticking with my assessement that DA2 was technically even in regards to the LI ratio.

Not like it really matters to me anyway, all I care about is good options, not fairness.

You are free to use whatever criteria you want.  It doesn't mean that you or I are right.  It ultimately comes down to what the Word of God is on the matter, I guess. I don't think we've ever seen a dev call Tallis a romance, but I might be mistaken.

Seb also doesn't remain with Hawke in the epilogue. I'd say he "counts" but also has a high chance of getting the Jacob treatment in DAI...which is why I'm switching to Izzy.

I don't recall any equivalent to Tallis or Sebastian for gay males.

I was referring to the genders of the LIs actually, and I did say in my previous post that since Tallis was bi it technically still wasn't gonna be "fair" for everyone.

Well of course, and you're right, no dev has called Tallis a romance, whereas Sebastian has been acknowledged as such.

How much official "romance" status is worth to people is a different issue, doesn't really affect much for the player if they are satisfied with the content.

How could someone not enjoy a romance like this, though? I don't know if I could ever go back.

I agree with you that the actual value of an "official dev-designated romance notation" is a strictly YMMV scenario.  My point is more that people start to make these qualitative judgments about who is and who isn't a romance and, in many cases, it's just to make a point about numbers.  The fact that Sebastian was a romance for straight women only is notable.  It might not be significant for some people, but I don't think it's fair to dismiss the romance's existence to counter the point that straight women have received more options in two consecutive games.  Again, that might not be significant fact.  Many people don't care about it.  But it is the truth.  That's more my point.

I tend to get frustrated when I see people starting to dismiss romances willy-nilly.  It's probably because I am in the demographic that gets so few options that it's seems disrespectful (maybe that's too strong a word, maybe "insensitive" or "distasteful"?) in some ways to be like...."Oh, that option.  Well it doesn't really count because <reasons>" when there are people who get less options and would be very grateful for an option like Sebastian (or Allers or Chambers or Juhani, etc.).

Heh, don't think that I can't sympathize there, I was tired enough of hearing people dismiss Kelly Chambers in ME2, that I actually got somewhat satisfied to see her granting the paramour achievement in ME3, if only so I could have that "official" backing (even if it made no real difference to my enjoyment).

I think it's because Sebastian isn't very well liked. Sort of like "Yeah I got an extra present but it was a fuscia sweater." Which can lead to a (false) impression that he's just being used to score points and the people complaining wouldn't want him if it was an option.

I will admit to raising my eyebrows slightly as it seemed like Solas was being passed around like a hot potato in old romance threads. M/m players wanted him to be straight and f/m players wanted him gay.

I was super disappointed to find out that Lady Aeducan couldn't reconnect with Gorim. There was like a line or two difference between her and Lord Aeducan and then it was back to "Dwarven goods! Fine dwarven goods!"......... I loved Gorim being a dedicated shield to his Lady.

This is...probably my favorite "romance" in the whole series. I wish it was a full fledged one. I love how if you go balls to the wall sadistic, self obsessed Aeducan, he's just like "awww, look how great you are at scaring/killing people". He's pragmatic and protective (but not in a paternalistic way, he knows she can handle herself) and has great hair and sob. WHY GORIM WHY.

...on the other topic, I totally count Sebastian as a "real" romance. I think people who use the content argument are being disingenuous, and that if he had the same amount of content, but you could bang him, this wouldn't be as popular of a view.

Yeah, I hear ya.  I was totally one of the guys hoping that Solas wasn't one of the two options that I was going to get.  When it was confirmed that I had IB and Dorian, then I was cool with Solas being an m/m option.  If he had been, you can bet sure money that I would never had uttered the "he didn't count" phrase simply because he was race-gated, though.  I'd have stood firmly in saying that there were three m/m options.  Just like I would never say that I had less than two full options in ME 3, even though one of my options could have been dead for two games and the other one was an NPC.

Last i checked the straight option for males was restricted to Cass alone ._.

One romance isn't much, but its Cass so it's cool.

<.< I hope.

Sometimes I feel like the only person who has ever fallen for someone they didn't fancy or even like much when the first met them. Personality can be a game changer. Literally in this case.

I guess using this viewpoint would depend on how you would approach romance in a video game verses real life. I don't hold video game choices to the same standards as I would in real life.

In real life, I would never discount someone due to them not being physically attractive, but I would in a video game and not even feel an ounce of remorse. On that same note, in real life I would never date someone who was an assassin that tried to kill me and my friends, nor be friends with someone who slaughtered an entire family because he couldn't find his sword.

I am not too happy with Solas. If I am honest with myself, him and Ironbull give me the creeps. I am entirely willing to be open minded and give them a fair shake, but as of now, we really only have their looks to go by. I can't really knock someone for being disappointed.

Josephine counts for men.

But--and maybe this makes me a bad person--I've never cared about gender/orientation distribution. In ME3, I was quite happy with Garrus and Sam, whereas I only liked Miranda for MShep. I switched to male for KOTOR, BG, and JE. I don't even want the extras I have in DAI. Other than Blackwall, who I'm over the moon about, I'm interested in two women.

It's called "an unfortunate lack of in game female Qunari available to use as an example."
