Gunpowder for canons mostly, they don't say anything about it being wielded. Maybe we will find out more in this coming game. Another reason I am playing a female Qunari first. ![]()

Probably won't be too long before the first Qunari firearm shows up.

There are other factors in how advanced you can get than whether you realise something goes BANG violently. For example: How effective are you at organising and sharing information? How easily can people try new ideas? How much useful energy can you extract from your environment?
Gunpowder gives you a way to extract some useful energy from your environment in a very narrow context. But, while military might does matter, it's far from being the sole defining aspect of advancement. If your enemy can get the formula for gunpowder and that's your advantage gone... you're not that advanced.

I've always wondered this. I wrote it off as Bioware will never have guns in the dragon age universe as just a thought, but really.....if they have cannons on battle ships....they should definitely have firearms.
As you can see by my name that would only make me like them more....if thats even possible lol.

They are advanced in the Sciences (not detailed ), but are behind in Magic (as they fear it greatly). Most civilizations in Thedas are less scientifically advanced due to them focusing more on magic and how it can help them.

You need good ironworks to get the right mix of iron otherwise they can blow up on you. The first
hand held firearms were made around the 15th century. With canons the next blight will likely be a lot easier.

They likely have field cannons as well. It was a while after cannons were invented that useful handheld firearms were invented.
The Qunari's military technology is more advanced than the rest of Thedas, except in the area of combat magic. Circle mages are far superior to Saarebas. Apparently, they also have better medical sciences, and their civilian population has a longer life expectancy than that of Thedas.

I think the qunari look at magic as a dangerous tool to use for peace and a good one to use in war. They have gaatlok explosives and some sort of cannon. They've got warships and optics. They've also got mages that they unleash on their enemies. They don't seem to lack focus.

Advanced enough to invent multiple types of poisonous gases that alter brain chemistry in very specific ways. Apparently, they have also refined these substances to harm specific races, as in the case of saar-qamek only effecting non-qunari. Overall, their technology seems to be far more sophisticated than anything in Thedas.

Not necessarily. Everyone here seems to assume that gunpowder works the same way it does in our world. What if it is more difficult to produce? What if its ingredients are rare? What if it is more volatile and has higher brisance, so that it is usable in cannons with thick metal barrels, but far too likely to rupture the barrels of more fragile firearms?

Scientifically? Very. They have the best 'mundane'... everything. From architecture, to chemistry, technology, and medicine. It's the result of a culture that values knowledge and wisdom, but stigmatizes magic.

pfff they are no advanced that many Thedas nations especially like Tevinter and Dwarves, and expecially not as Elvenan was, who existed more than 7000 years ago..ALL so called "advanced" Qunari science and knoledges is stealed from others and "advanced" in the eyes of Orlais Chantry priest
Qunari powder what is mostly useless(easy to blow up and become wet, and you need a barrels of it) and far far weak compare to magic exposives, was stolen from elves, it is ancient knoledge from the time of Arlathan(i am sure that somewhere in ancient Tevinter archives Thedas have this formula for milenia and because they just dont need them they forget about that..and they still does not need that powder)
the only what Qunari have is a hundreds-thousands of zealots who will die if Tammasran will order them to do so and for more than 400 years they do their job well on the coasts of Tevinter when they become crushed with their ships and become slaves if they survive

edit: There's nothing in the lore to support such claims, so you probably shouldn't take it seriously.

We also have to remember that our own technological advancement as a species is not linear.
Many of the ancient civilizations had vastly improved technologies over their medieval counterparts (better than many parts of even the modern world). Roads, machines, indoor plumbing, sanitation, transportation - so much of it was vastly superior in the ancient period.
I imagine the Qunari to be close to the tech. level of maybe the 13th Century in the middle east. More advanced than their western neighbors, but potentially still behind their eastern counterparts (who were making great advances in gunpowder technology by this time - though not guns).

If this was Civilization, I don't think the Qunari would have more than a couple of extra techs on the other Civs.

It's very hard to judge differences in technology between societies that have some ability and don't exercise it because the need doesn't occur, societies that have to practice that technology by necessity, and those that lack the ability altogether.
Qunari differences may simply be the result of a culture that has different geographical concerns and has developed different technologies and practices to address them. And those requirements may well put hard limits on the degree to which they can advance by the social structures that they force society into.

Interesting notions of technology, 2014, several of our current tech was stolen as well. Car mechanics was simpler but there were plans drawn for them, the helicopter, these were theoretical mostly. However, indoor plumbing, waste management, and several other simpler things have already been made. A lightbulb was already drawn schematically with a snake tongue in a glass tube, a battery was already made and used in certain locations.
So, its not difficult to see Qunari could have several things already done, what, not sure of. Though its not hard to believe they could have some of these things mixed up a bit.
Oh, nevermind all that, the Qunari beamed down from their Starship orbiting space. ![]()

They seem to be as advanced as Renaissance Europe. Good maritime technology especially. Optics, good shipbuilding, cannon.. (or gunpowder at least).
