Soooo who's replaying DAO + DA2 in anticipation of DAI?

So I recently reinstalled DA2 and was about to attempt one more go at completing a play through which I've never done before. Then I saw this thread and decided to start with Origins again first. And instead of playing as a 'Good guy' / 'Knight in shining armour' type character, I decided to make a Dalish Elf who hates humans and reluctantly joined the wardens. I actually role play my character now and think about what actions would best suit his personality and feelings. It's made my favourite game ever even better. Didn't think that was possible. So thank you all in this thread who shared your characters in depth.

Now, if someone could help me out with the bug bear that is DA2. I really want to finish a play through. I just find the story rather boring, companions lack luster (compared to Origins) and the environment being recycled does not help. The only companion I ever liked was Bethany, but we all know how that turns out! Can anyone advise a class / party load out that is purely fun to play with. I don't care about combat effectiveness. I just want to enjoy the journey and make it to the end.

Thanks again!

My biggest issue with DA2 has always been the repeat environments (as is pretty much everyone's). I still dream of the day where you actually left the city after the deep roads and the game opened up at the start of act 2. That's not the case though so this is what I did and what I recommend you do when you replay it. Space the story driven DLC out between acts to give yourself a break from Kirkwall (I did MotA in Act 2 and Legacy in Act 3). I'm a big fan of Bethany too (reaaaally didn't like Carver) and she's actually pretty happy if you send her to the Circle. I recommend going rogue for fun factor. I played as a two-handed warrior my most recent play through and that was really good for destroying groups and sending enemies flying especially if you spec him for burst damage, but I had the most fun in battles when I used the skills of my rogues. In regards to party members: if you want hilarious banter which makes the repetition easier, Varric is always a solid choice. The others are dependent on your class, but I usually kept my love interest around for story reasons. What did surprise me though was that Sebastian was actually pretty fun to play. I didn't like aspects of his character but as a group member his archer focus was more interesting than Varric's ranged skills. I've thought about doing it before but never have due to dying without at least some heals on higher difficulties, but a group of Isabella, Varric, and Sebastian would actually be pretty crazy and fun. Especially if you went rogue too. All rogue party, wonder how that would turn out :).

Thanks buddy, exactly what I was hoping to read.

I always steered clear of Varric, for two reasons really:

1) Shamefully a bit of a xenophobe when it comes to Dwarves. Always loved elves though!

2) Not a crossbow fan either, even though Bianca can upgrade nicely. I do love bows however.

Hmmm, I'm seeing a pattern there. But I will try and give Varric a good go.

Carver was a big whiney baby. Hated having him in my party. Bethany though, when I lost her in the deep roads on my first play through, broke my heart! Isabella was too selfish and a bit of .... well you know. Merrill I wanted to like, but she became more annoying as time went on. Aveline was alright, but rather boring. Haven't played long enough with Sebastian to really comment on him.

Good idea regarding the DLCs to break up the main storyline. I will definitely give that a go.

Also replaying DAO as an elf mage arcane warrior. I love that class. I once wanted to play as a blood mage but I don't think I have it in me to kill Wynne and i've never NOT recruited someone. Hmm. Guess I could try in DA2.

I've wanted to do one of those ruthless playthroughs but could never finish it. I always start out ruthless and then not even halfway through, I switch back to diplomacy.

Currently playing through DAO again as a female elf mage.  But this time no Alistair romance (actually no romances at all) and I am going to save Loghain (for the achievement).  And get him to do he DR with Morrigan.  Just because I want him to casually pop up in Awakening just for a change.

I am at the end of the Fade quest - it seems to go on forever!

I've always recruited everyone as well, up until my most recent play through as a Human Noble Warrior, which was the first time I properly role played a character. Sten killing woman and children was too much for him, I couldn't possible over look his transgressions. So I left him to rot. It seemed like something my character would do.

And I've just started a Dwarf Noble Origin after my previous post where shunned Varric for being a Dwarf. I felt like a bad person. So I'm about 30 minutes in and OMG, that Origin is a good story so far, politics, back stabbing, brother vs brother. I know everyone said it was one of if not the best origin story, yet I still couldn't bring myself to play a Dwarf. Big mistake on my part.

Now I have 3 different Origin play throughs to do, then on to DA2. Good thing I have 2 months until DA:I

I'm currently playing a female dwarf commoner, now back in Orzammar and just about to find Branka. For those who don't like the Orzammar quest lines or who find them boring, I suggest playing this origin to give them quite a different flavor. From the moment I set foot in the place, to everyone's reactions, to seeing people from the origin again (no spoilers for those who haven't played it before) it's really a different experience than playing as the other characters, even dwarf noble.

I thought going in that I would romance Zevran but Alistair has been kind of sneaky and gave me that darn rose before I knew it. Listening to the two of them talk about me like I'm not there is very amusing. I have almost no friendship points with Morrigan or Leliana, but Sten is my buddy. No idea how I'm going to end this run, but I kind of want her to stick around for DA:A so I might have to convince Alistair to do the DR.

Will import into DA2 but I'm not sure what Hawke I will use other than snarky. My last Hawke was aggressive and I hated her so much I skipped the DLC just to get the game over with sooner. Since I suffered through romancing Anders and Sebastian in two of my most recent play throughs, this time I will go back to Fenris, who's my favorite. Might roll a male just 'cause.... Since I managed to complete all achievements in both games over the last several months, now I can just play for fun. :D

Will we only be limited to 6 to 8 skills/spells on consoles? I know there's the spell wheel, but it was so clunky :(

lol, play for fun? The very thought! How dare you! As I've mentioned, DA2 has definitely been more of a chore than a fun experience.

I've currently got 3 Origin play throughs going on. I might have to finish one or all of them before contemplating another, otherwise I'll suffer a multiple personality meltdown (each has their own unique personality and traits). However Dwarf Commoner and City Elf Mage are on my to do list.

As I understand it there is an 8 skill/spell limitation in combat (swappable out of combat)

That limitation also applies to PC as there is no in-combat skill/spell wheel and combat mechanics are consistent cross-platform.
