i still don't know how Snake can take aimed shots using left eye but holding a weapon in the right hand.

Big Boss is that much of a badass, though it would have made more sense to make him ambidextrous.

I don't like the box cover for the Phantom Pain. It's too generic, I loved the cover art for MGS, MGS2 and MGS3 . MGS4 and this one is disappointing.

I'm pretty sure MGS 4 looked just as generic...

yeah well it's a good thing that we can play other characters rather than being stuck with this cripple.

i am pretty sure i saw a character named Sadistic Kitten.

**** yeah! Japanese GI Joe Kojima San himself! Guy handles vehicles like a pro!

Can we play through the entire game as any of the soldiers we recruit or do certain missions require you to play faux Big Boss?

i am pretty sure i saw a character named Sadistic Kitten.

Yeah I think the common soldiers you abduct are assigned a random prefix and suffix, like Grey Bull or Crimson Beaver

I have a feeling that playing as the soldiers will probably be restricted to Side Ops and Metal Gear Online -- Could be wrong though. Peace Walker did allow it.

yeah i am kinda worried that they will force us to play 'plot' missions with the Boss. kinda sad.

also: with this scandal with Kojima it's a good chance that Konami will turn this game in a generic game with cliches from other "open world" games, with a weak plot.

Unless they effectively revamped this game in the last 5 minutes or something, I doubt it. Kojima has been developing this game for a while alongside Ground Zeroes. A weak open world is always a risk though with any modern open world games. I liked Ground Zeroes' tight structure, I hope Phantom Pain can somewhat capture that same essence.y

Well Kojima is still heavily involved in the development of MGSV so I think he is going to pull out all the stops for his last game in the franchise, but yeah I have no doubt the next game in the series will be a pachinko machine.

As for cliches from other open world games we will have to wait and see, odds are there will probably be more than a few like pointless collectibles and whatnot, I just hope we don't have to travel to drop zones by land in order to unlock them for future use.

If the game is anything like Peacewalker, you unlock missions as BIg Boss and can later replay them as MSF grunts.

(Some MSF grunts have WAY better combat stats than Big Boss if you're curious)

Though I think you have to play as BB when escaping the hospital, reaching Motherbase, and going to rescue Kaz in Afghanistan.

yes. in this article also stated, that the only "companion" you get for 'free' is D.Horse. You may miss D.Dog or even kill Quiet for example.

So it is safe to asume that 'grunts' are also may/should be found during playthrough.

few words about this article. i guess we all can agree that MGS series, except for Rising, are movies that you can play. MGS4 movie is about 8 hrs long (7:41:21 to be exact). So from where i stand these changes in the gameplay may be considered as an attempt to alter the series. Also - cheap helicopters my also be a part of demo version for E3, because if we have so many resources that we can waste a helicopter on each mission we play, what's the point in microtransaction?

Still author's remarks about plot and relationships between characters are still disturbing.

Grunts are pretty much available off the bat/when you get the fulton system.

I disagree with that notion, I consider a game to be an interactive movie when the total cutscene length is greater than the total length of the gameplay segments.

Here are the cutscene lengths vs the gameplay lengths as a rough estimate:

I originally did this little thing out of curiosity, but I'll post it here anyway in case anyone is interested.

The times are not my own, but a mean average taken from the website http://www.howlongtobeat.com/
The cutscene length is judged by YouTube searching 'all cutscenes'
The gameplay is of course play time minus cutscene time

You probably already guessed the order, anyway e5001191.gif

MGS1
Total play time = 11h 32m (692 minutes)
Gameplay = 8h 17 m (497 minutes)
Cutscenes = 3h 15m (195 minutes)

Gameplay/Cutscene = 2.5487
Cutscene Proportion = 28%

MGS2
Total play time = 13h 08m (788 minutes)
Gameplay = 7h 44m (464 minutes)
Cutscenes = 5h 24m, (324 minutes)

Gameplay/Cutscene = 1.4321
Cutscene Proportion = 41%

MGS3
Total play time = 16h 11m (971 minutes)
Gameplay = 11h 13m (673 minutes)
Cutscenes = 4h 58m (298 minutes)

Gameplay/Cutscene = 2.2584
Cutscene Proportion = 31%

MGS: PO
Total play time = 12h 36m (756 minutes)
Gameplay = 10h 39m (639 minutes)
Cutscenes = 1h 42m (102 minutes)

Gameplay/Cutscene = 6.2647
Cutscene Proportion = 13%

MGS4
Total play time = 19h 27m (1,167 minutes)
Gameplay = 10h 59m (659 minutes)
Cutscenes = 8h 26m (508 minutes)

Gameplay/Cutscene = 1.2972
Cutscene Proportion = 44%

MGS: PW
Total play time = 34h 08m (2,048 minutes)
Gameplay = 31h 11m (1,871 minutes)
Cutscenes = 2h 57m (177 minutes)

Gameplay/Cutscene = 10.5706
Cutscene Proportion = 9%

MGR: Revengeance
Total play time = 7h 47m (467 minutes)
Gameplay = 5h 28m (328 minutes)
Cutscenes = 2h 19m (139 minutes)

Gameplay/Cutscene = 2.3597
Cutscene Proportion = 30%

To speed up development time/time for DD soldiers to complete their own missions.

- BB is silent through most of the game and mostly listens to the people around him. It looks like VA services of Kiefer Sutherland are too expensive.

I take it he didn't listen to the audio tapes where Kojima mentioned that's where most of the VA went to.

- Stealth can be ignored after one hour of the game, when you unlock artillery strikes. And game turns into one of Michael Bay's movies. You may also summon helicopter for close support, and even if you lose it - not a big deal, helicopter is very cheap. Game looks very nice as an action game, however stealth element was lost somewhere.

He complains about lack of stealth while launching artillery strikes/calling the gunship, he doesn't know how to play Metal Gear.

Won't be surprised when his GMP eventually tanks on higher risk missions/maps and he can't develop better weapons and equipment.

Reading his other comments especially regarding motive convinces me that's he's an ignoramus.

BTW guys, don't go on the Metal Gear Solid subreddit, they're experiencing a tsunami of spoilers.

The Gamescom presentation was pretty much the best gameplay demo I've ever seen. The sheer variety of approaches is really impressive; that line about a bunch of people realizing they all approached a mission differently is exciting.

I'm not worried about the story/characters. It won't be MGS4 dense, and that's probably a good thing.

I think what he's trying to say is that Airstrikes are so cheap to afford, it makes doing missions stealthily pointless.

I would have hoped there would have been Anti Air emplacements to prevent players from relying heavily on airstrikes.
