Hey guys.
So, I wanted to try and get an idea of how everyone goes about naming their characters. Do you just use names that you like? Do you try and match culture/nationalities? Do you give them a theme?
Eg: For DA:O, I gave my humans medieval english names, and for elves/dwarves I used a name creater (possibly based off of D&D or something like that?). Whereas in DA:2, since we were stuck as human, I decided to theme my names after Gods/Goddesses.
With DA:I, i'm wanting to go back to the culture/nationality style (i.e: naming my elf something elven). Are there any 'guides' for this, incorporating DA lore? So, like, a list of elven or qunari words/names and their meanings?
Naming your Inquisitor (and previous protags).

I think there's a qunari dictionary (albeit limited) on the dragonage wiki.
As for nationalities, yeah, I try that. Although so far, we've only played Fereldens for human. So I come up with Celt or Brit type of names. With elves and dwarves, I just sort of have a list of names I've used for years in different games. Usually gathered from Tolkien or D&D lore.

All of my female humans have the same first name
The Warden: Claire Cousland
The Champion: Claire Hawke
The Inquisitor: Claire Trevelyan
The reason behind this is cause in my head canon i role play that certain women who are born with this first name have a destiny/fate that ties them all together

I like the name Joe.
I'm thinking of naming one or two of my character after characters from the novels. I am also thinking of naming a female human mage Amell to romance Cullen. And, I may make a female Qunari named Bessie to romance Iron Bull.

For mage hawke its more of rythming and irony ; pride hawke cause sometimes if you play a sarcastic hawke he comes across as a bit arrogant
And for my mage inq nayllen "nayl" trevelyn its also an attempt at humour. Nayllen sounds like "nailing" which has many euphismisms and nayl is a pun on a building tool.
I name my pcs off of things that bring me amusement

I have for quite some time now named all my PC's with my high-school nickname detorio and I try to maintain that standard throughout the DA games:
DA:O = Detorio Cousland
DAII = Detorio Hawke
DA:I = Detorio Trevelyan (first playthrough)
Once I've exhausted Detorio I then proceed to use names from my favorite fantasy books.

Warden = Aerya Mahariel, because it sounded elf-ey.
Hawke = Konner Hawke, because it means 'lover of hounds' and he's Ferelden and stuff but there is already a Connor in DA so I changed the spelling. Nicknamed him Jesus Hawke though, because he legit looked like Jesus.
Inquisitor = *insert undecided Qunlat word here* Adaar.
I don't really have much deep thought for naming. I'm bad at names. :S

I'm looking forward to wondering where Trevelyan is from, and the culture of his/her part of the Free Marches. Then I'll name accordingly.
It could be a Ferelden-ish name still though, since Trevelyan is Cornish.
Or hell, maybe I'll just keep the default. Sometimes that works.

I lost all my old DAO saves, so I only have my canon save that I'd made after DA2 came out.
This did allow me to match the Amell cousins so my Warden is called Brittany because I always thought it goes well with Bethany.
My DA2 Hawke is called Kitty because I thought Kitty Hawke sounded good for a sarcastic rogue (She properly Katherine but likely only her mum called her that)
DAI If I play a mage, which is likely I will probably stick with the B theme, I'm still trying to find one I like that fits the Brittany/Bethany phonetics

Also, before knowing Marian was lady Hawkes default name, I already meant to name my character like that, because I always liked the name and find it very medieval.
I'm having a hard time, tough, in finding a name for my canon inquisitor, as I plan to roll a female qunari and have no idea about qunari names... Perhaps I'll just try to find an exotic sounding name like Zíngara.

Royce Cousland
Evander Hawke
Laurence Trevelyan
I actually choose names based off of their etymology. I'd rather not go with something that translates into ass-face in Aramaic.

Male warden. Adair
Female warden. Lileas

But for my inquitors

Are you pronouncing Royce with an R like in Roll-Royce, or with an H, like Royce Gracie?

Ouch, that pun hurts. I did name one of my mage Hawkes Amelle, though, so I won't judge.
I had a list of names, but they've already changed a couple times. My first Inq is going to be a dual wielding pint-queller, Sighrid Cadash, and I'm eventually going to have a Dalish archer prankster named Arabelle.

Male elf mage: Revas ("freedom" in elven)
Female qunari warrior: Tashari (short for "Katashari," which is basically "person who seeks death" in qunlat)
Male dwarf rogue: Erasyl ("noble hero" in Kazakh, a Central Asian language)
Male qunari: Vash (short for "Vashedan," which is "trash" in qunlat, and is inspired by Vash the Stampede)
Female dwarf warrior: Thema ("queen" in Akan, a Western African language)
If I can't think of a decent name (in the case of the dwarves) based on the language provided by the series, then I use a real-world non-European name (because I'm a boring Irish-German American).
