Okay in terms of US Dollars what would the exchange rate be i wonder? Through Origins, we give away a lot of money for little compensation, still im curious if fans have come up with a currency rate?

I don't think they do actually have the one currency, doesn't the collectors edition come with an "Orlesian coin" With Celenes or some Orlesians head on it?
Dont think they'd want to be using Orlesian coins in Ferelden and Tevinter....
And then theres the Ferelden currency with the Theirin symbol on it.. Doubt the rest of thedas would want to use the "Dog Lords" currency, why would they use the currency of some backwater nation? Thats just strange.
And from banter with Zevran we can find out the Antivans use a currency called "Andris" when he says to Alistair he would charge five thousand Andris for killing Alistair.

500 sovereigns is enough to support an Orlesian army including chevalier for a year.

Gold is gold. The symbol stamped on it doesn't change this.

Each nations currency seems to be worth the same value, 1 Ferelden Sovereign being worth 1 Gold crown yeah.. But the national currency would still likely need to be exchanged if you cross the border.
You probably couldn't pay your Orlesian workers in Orlais with Ferelden Sovereigns for example. Imagine if an American tried to pay his employees cash in hand in yen?
But yeah all i'm really pointing out is that there doesn't seem to be a single national currency, The mints in Orlais wouldn't be issuing out coins with the symbol of the Royal house of Ferelden on it? That'd be just...strange

Is that bit from Stolen Throne? Something tells me that might not be accurate any more.

We use paper money. Thedas doesn't. The lore on this has been non existent thus far, but I like to think that Imperial (as in Tevinter) coins are still used in conjunction with each nation's standard currency due to how widespread the Imperium was in past times.

Well, if that and information later shared in DA2 are both true, then that would mean a significant war effort can be funded by the sale of 5 slaves, give or take.

You're thinking of fiat money. Thedas clearly has a commodity money system based on the value of the metal, where it doesn't matter where the particular coin was minted, same as most pre-Renaissance currencies.

A fair point. New lore trumps old lore. Maybe the Imperium is just that wealthy and slaves are that valuable to them. We know that they're for the most part treated a lot better than the downtrodden of the rest of the continent. The downside is the blood magic going on behind closed doors.

Seems like a plot hole that they'd be that rich, when their only export that we know of is a nigh-extinct (albeit quite valuable) plant. I hope Bioware gives us a few clues as to how Tevinter manages to stay afloat economically.

I agree with this. I've assumed that Tevinter mages have figured out a way to make gold. It's the only real explanation for their ability to purchase slaves at astronomical costs without having any real exports.
I mean, it's either that or every criminal organization in Thedas is sending money to a Tevinter Magister as tribute or something.

500 sovereigns is enough to support an Orlesian army including chevalier for a year.
To call something an army there would have to be atleast 2500 soldiers (1k is rather more of a "large force" than an army).
2500 soldiers for one year is 912 500 (2500 times 365)
Lets call this unit payment. Now, 500 sovereigns. 1 sovereign is 100 silver. So 500 times 100 = 50 000 silver in 500 sovereigns.
50 000 silver divided on 912 500 payment units = 0.05 silver per day. Lets move the comma up to 0.5 making it copper/pennies.
Tbh I dont think any soldier would work for a monthly pay of 1.5 silvers. Even if you double it to 1000 sovereigns the per month payment would only increase to 3 silver a month. Feel free to correct me if my math is off.

Perhaps, but it's vague. You can find alchemists in pretty much any kingdom, and nothing aside from Ambrosia has been mentioned in particular. Ambrosia is, again, very expensive, but also very limited.

Slaves and Lyrium (one of the largest consumers). Pretty much two of the most, if not the most, expensive vices one can have in Thedas.
I mean, it's either that or every criminal organization in Thedas is sending money to a Tevinter Magister as tribute or something.
I figure they'd have to make a lot of their money, or most of it, through various international black markets. We know that slaves are flowing in from the other nations, regardless of slavery's legality... but I'm more interested in what's flowing out.

Master Wade says when making your armor during the Drakescale Armor quest, "It wont cost a bloody Orlesian penny."
also if I simplify this, 1 sovereign = 100 us dollars, then certain parts of the game seem ridiculously expensive like when you give the Reverend Mother in Lothering money, you have the option of giving her 5 sovereign, 500 hundred dollars is ridiculous in terms of tithing. I guess what im saying is, using US dollars helps me gain a better perspective on just how much money the characters throw around in these games. Seriously before this thread, i never really thought about how much money you waste/spend in this game.

well, considering a mug of ale at the hanged man costs three bits (coppers), and going by the beer prices at my local hangouts, 3 bits can be anywhere from 3 to 6 dollars american.... so say 1 bit = 1 dollar.... then 1 silver = 100 dollars and 1 sovereign = 10000 dollars. now if its 6, then its 1 bit = 2 dollars in which 1 silver would = 200 dollars and 1 sovereign = 20000 dollars.... This was according to da2, however in origins if you give money to the people in dust town, the chick who reveals the hideout gets like 10 silvers or something and says she can go to bed on a full stomach... and the guy you get to catch leliana's nug can get like 40 silvers i think and says he can buy a blanket and some food... so im not sure on that.... maybe orzammar just has inflated prices...
