The Impact of Past Companions

Personally, in DAO all my companions had high approval; in DA2 all companions were max friendship except Sebastian which was max rivalry, BUT Merrill was always remained neutral as I was nice to her in ever regard except with the Elluvian -- so Merill never got full friendship or rivalry
My main point is that do you guys think that the past approval/friendship/rivalry score of companions will have a significant effect besides just dialogue changes? Also, do you think "neutral" companions will be conflicted when remembering the hero/champion?

I don't think they'll really have any effect, aside from characters who died in the final act due to it, whoever your love interest ended up being, and however Sebastian ended up.

Maybe... It sounds good, but I don't know if that kind of thing is considered important to the devs or not. If Varric comments on Hawke at all, it will probably be fairly neutral and brief, independent of whether he was a Friend or Rival of the Champion. I guess we'll know for sure once the Keep is released. If it doesn't come up there, then that should answer your question.

It does really change the personality of the companions, though. I mean, rivalry Sebastian vs. friendship Sebastian? Huge difference. Rivalry vs. Friendship Anders, Isabela, same thing. And since Bioware does have a habit of at least giving nods to old companions, it'd be a shame if they didn't take into account the possible personality changes.

Do you guys think the approval/friendship/rivalry of past companions will have a significant effect in Dragon age: Inquisition?
Significant effect? No not at all. Some effect? Possibly. There might be some mentions to your past companions relationships to the Warden or Hawke. But it will be no more than that.

If such a thing had an impact..it would mean they will show up............no?

I think the friendship/rivalry will have effect on some returning characters, perhaps not all.

Yes, they'll have slight change of dialogue line!

I doubt specific values will matter. This would require them to track it via the Keep, and it seems like a lot of effort for a little payoff. I think the most we'll see of this is a switch beside the DA2 companions marked Friendship/Rivalry.

It also effects different companions differently. For example, my first Hawke was rivals with Merrill because he was consistently destroying dangerous magic. But she reacted just as friendly as my later Hawke that friended her. But Isabela finds the model ship that Hawke gives her adorable or insulting depending of if she's friends or rivals with them.

Well I hope any interaction we have with the Warden is met with an appropriate response from Leliana if she was killed. Other than that I'm not really sure why past companions relationships.

I don't think the friendship/rivalry itself will play a role but rather the outcomes.
The outcomes like giving Isabela a ship, the Red Lyrium piece to Varric, Merrill smashing her mirror. Some are tied to the friendship system but they are events in and of itself.

I hope this is important to DA:I in some way... it seems like it should be, but maybe the piece was too small to affect Varric's mind. Or Hawke's for that matter.

I think this will be a case of both paths leading to the same place. If it's any different I will be surprised.

I think the actions and current status of past companions will have more impact. Did Merrill destroy eluvian, did you give lyrium shard to Varric, who you romanced, did Morrigan have OGB and with who, did someone die (this is probaply biggest except if it's Leliana), did Bethany and Carver die, went to circle/templars or grey wardens etc. Approval will probaply only impact if Warden or Hawke sees their old companions and probaply then briefly to interaction and dialogue: like Varric being happy to see friendship Hawke and less happy to see rivalry Hawke.

I doubt that their opinions of the Warden/Hawke will matter at all (save maybe for romances?). We have to remember that, most likely, any old companion we meet will be meeting the INQUISITOR, not Warden/Hawke. So, for example, I don't see the point of say, Sebastian showing up like "Omg I hate Hawke. He/She let Anders live after he killed Elthina so now I'm going to kill them.", while Inquisitor would be like "lol who even are these guys?"
Though, as mentioned above, I believe their past ACTIONS will definitely have more importance.

I don't think that their approval can have much of an effect in DA:I. Their adventures are years in the past, and your inquisitor most likely never met Hawke, let alone the Warden, before. And there's no real reason to blurt out stuff like "Did you know the Warden? How did you like him/her??" or, even better, "And with whom were you in a relationship ten years ago??" in the middle of a conversation while it's raining demons.

Clearly the Quizzy joined the order because they wanted to be just like Warden/Hawke!

I'm hoping that their is a difference between a hardened Alistair and an unhardened one. The same going for Leliana, however I doubt it will make much difference to my Alistair on the account of him being executed and all.
