So before I went further in Dragon Age 2, I thought, maybe I should play through 1 and the expansion Awakening first! So I just got them both, just fired up Dragon Age Origins and was wondering, do I play through the end of it then play Awakening or do they both integrate within each other?

Play through Origins then play Awakening. The only DLCs that integrate into DAO are Warden's Keep, The Stone Prisoner, and Return to Ostagar. Everything else is separate and either takes place before, after, or in an alternate universe of DAO.

If you also have Golems of A. DLC, then I recommend playing it after Awakenings; much easier.

I read somewhere that you can transfer your character from Origins to DA2, however, I'm playing an elf and I didn't see any other race besides human available in DA2.

You transfer your character's choices. Your Warden will get mentioned a few times, but you can't play them. You are always either a male or female human (Hawke) in DA2.
