1.)Do you usually base them off of a character from another series, (novels, movies, games, etc)

2.)Do you plan them from scratch days/weeks/months in advance

3.)Do you just wing it once you get a hold of the game

or

4.)Base them off of yourself

Personally i usually do a mixture of 1&2. Ill get a general idea or foundation of their personality from a character(s) i really enjoyed and want to build off of (Bane,Stannis Baratheon, Caesar from POTA) then ill change or add what i want in order to really make them my own character and also to make them fit the DA setting.

How about you guys?

Well, I tend towards good-natured, semi-sarcastic, do-gooder as my first time runs.

I definitely wing it. The first character is usually me and even my other characters (I don't tend to replay a game as much as others do on this forum)don't deviate much from how I personally view particular issues. However thanks to the Keep I can more easily create different protagonists for DAO and DA2, personalities I could never play as.

I chose personalities that I think will make the game I'm playing more enjoyable for me. So option 2 until the game comes out, then make any changes to the character if I think it will make for a better experience.

Option 2:  I come up with a few ideas and then pick the one that sounds the most interesting for the first playthrough...  I'm sure that some of them wind up being similar to characters I've seen in fiction, but it's never intentional.  Well, almost never.  I actually did make a few Fallout New Vegas characters based on comic book and video game characters, but this was after playing the game about 10 times already...

Usually I play with the character creator and let my imagination run on the result, after choosing the class and origin that seem to fit best with the main story in my opinion (Cousland in DAO, mage Hawke in DA2). This time will be different because I'm fond of the character of Lagertha in Vikings, so I'm going to mix her temper with the Dalish mage origin that I want to play. :)

I'm a wing it person. My mage Warden ended up being rather serious and reserved because of her background in the Circle. Hawke ended being a sarcastic, hardly take anything seriously type of person. Partly because it annoys Carver I think and partly as a counter balance to Fenris who is my Hawke' s LI.

I often base my pcs off my more positve/negative traits just taken bit farther than im normally allowed. Im sarcastic, like to joke around(dirty jokes are my passion, kind, at times greedy but always within reason. To say i self insert is fair. But after the 6th plathrough i build personlities based on a ideal character that fits comfertably in the universe

Depends.

I used to self insert , it's a nice way to play because you don't have to think much about what you're doing.(I'm going to do this for my 2nd DAI playthrough )

Playing Skyrim and Fallout New Vegas , I made different characters...mostly I had a vague idea of who they were when I started to go in the character creators...and I let the events shape those pc.

For Inquisition I have a background , it's pretty straighforward , Dalish Hunter ...I have ideas about who he is .But since in the game , his life is going to change big time...I don't know where he is going to end up.

One of my favorite female characters, nice choice, i can easily see her transition into the role of Inquisitor

I'm doing a self insert for the first time in a role playing game so my first play through will be based off me in personality and CC. My others I usually plan beforehand.

I guess I would say for the most part #4.

Mostly though even if I want to do something...which is usually killing someone i try to refrain, at least until I know that I won't be missing out on content of the game because I did it.  Sometimes I don't care..like in Anders case, but its a big defining factor.

My problem with self inserting (not saying you shouldnt do it) is that i already know how id react in situations, i wouldnt say its boring but its just predictable, naturally. I find it intriguing to plan a set personality and moral code for a given character then see how that persona unfolds with the events the he/she may meet throughout the journey. So while i may save a village rather than support my troops in reality, have a character that would do the opposite makes that decision more intense.

I tend to stray away from overdone character archetypes. "Sarcastic rougue" has been done so many times that I just can't bring myself into it. I also stay away from edgy characters cause they are just cringey for me. I like to play any character concept that I find interesting which means I end up playing a variety of characters.

What do you mean by edgy, just asking out of curiousity

My first time I like to somewhat make my character resemble myself. Not fully of course, because every character I make is automatically way cooler than me, but yanno.  B)

After that, I just go for what sounds fun at the moment. If I'm thinking of a certain LI for a character, I think of what would be the most amusing or interesting personality to combine them with. If not, I just wing it or decide from the background.

Combination of 2 and 4 ^^ I'm used to writing and creating characters, so creating characters for my games comes just as naturally. That said, playing an RPG is a unique experience, and I definitely put a part of myself in some of my characters and just sort of "live out that fantasy" of being someone different, and yet somehow closer to my true self.

Well edgy in my opinion is someone that is forcefully and obnoxiously conflicted, angsty and or brooding. If I am playing such a character then I have to have a good reason as to why they are like that.

oh yeah but one trait that I always incorperate into my characters it the ability to be level headed, logical and intelligent.

Intelligence is sexy.

I've always been a fan of the intellectual brute (almost sounds contradictory), i just find it very appealing for someone who could easily physical crush you, to resort to giving you an ass whooping verbally first. (Hence why im a fan of bane)

I usually go with intelligence & Agile. This is why I want to go with rogue while investing in scouts in my skyhold.

Information is valuable.
