A follow up on my "How do you determine the personality of you characters" thread.

So when it comes to customizing the look of your character (both in the initial character creator and in what they may wear) do you:

1.) Let the characters race/culture/class guide you

2.) Take influence from a character outside of the game (books, movies, other games)

3.) Base their look off of yourself

4.) Just wing it once you get a hold of the game

or

5.) A little of everything

My Inquisitor physically, will be a mix of these two:

Sometimes I have an image in my head of what I want to make my character look like, but I rarely go through with it.

Usually I just fiddle with sliders until I get a face that satisfies me, and go with that. :S

5.  All the things.  Also everyone kind of comes out looking like Penelope Cruz's cousin even though it's not intentional.

Wing it. I adjust the options until they look good to my eye. I dont want them to look like me, especially female characters.

I dont like to make the same character, so each time they look different

Well... most of my characters tend to look like some version of Magneto.  I guess I do it to keep things simple?

I pretty much always wing it. I like making up a look all from my imagination rather than base it off another character or person, but I see how that can be fun as well.

You know, one thing I have to say about these new voice acted characters... I tend to associate a face with a voice, so once I hear the Inquisitor speaking in some voice, it's going to be linked to that face for me.  The same happened with Shepard... I just couldn't imagine that voice coming from a face that didn't look like the one I first created.  In a game with a non-voiced PC, I don't need to worry about that, but now It's kind of a problem...

Well I usually play around character creator.. for DAI I have played around doll makers (I seriously need this game XD).

So far I want Adaar guy with white long messy hair with some braids, ram horns, blue eyes and little white beard.. hopefully it's not too much to ask for XD

I want Trevelyan lady with short curly hair and lot of freckles.

I have also Adaar lady and Lavellan guy planned but I'm not sure what I want their looks to be so far so I will wait of character creator I think.

There are particular physical characteristics I keep in mind when I create a character, and sometimes these come from people/other characters I've seen.  When I think of a character, I say, "I want them to have this sort of appearance" and illustrate or write it out in detail so that I have a reference to what they should look like before entering the CC.  Oftentimes things change when I get to the character creator (don't they always), but I try to keep the bones of that character's physicality in mind - this Trevelyan will have a dark complexion, this Adaar is going to have a strong jawline, this Lavellan's hair should be a creamy blond, this Cadash ought to be covered head-to-toe in freckles...stuff like that.

I normally take the preset I find the most appealing as a platform and then play around with it until I find it's to my tastes. I rarely try to pre-design character with a certain personality or inspiration in mind as it tends to fall apart or I can never get it quite right enough.

Though I don't take influence from a particular character, I just let my personal taste guide me.

I usually just wing it, but I think with DAI I might make my Inquisitor look like me.

I always thought I would feel weird doing it, but I think it might be cool for the first play through :)

When it comes to customizing the look of my characters i take influence from another character out of the game and combine that with my own ideas for what I want the character to look like. I loosely base my characters on my own looks, so they usually have the same skin tone, eyes, style as me.

I'm going to base my Dalish Necromancer mage's looks on Billie Lurk from Dishonored:

Ugh yeah it really made me "wut" the first few times during SWTOR I watched someone else's agent speaking with my agent's voice. Such a mindscrew XD

Never ever ever base a character off myself in either personality or appearance. Wouldn't be much of a hero now would he?

between 4 and 5. I may try to base their inital appearance on someone as a reference but once I'm in the game I'll pretty much put them in anything that looks nice or badass.

Really? I admit to once in a while making a character like me but without the parts of me I dislike (usually a smaller nose, a less fat upper lip and small ears compared to my dumbo ones XD)

I'm admittedly kinda shallow and just try to make all my characters, male and female, as hawt as physically possible.  :P

When it comes to character strength is my first notion. She should look powerful. Though few systems allow for this as power is often more implied by the body and few games give you a female frame that implies strength. I do what I can. After that I tend to branch into two different paths. I either want my character to look nurturing and compassionate or completely terrifying. Now this doesn't mean that the terrifying character isn't kind and sweet as can be.

One character I have drawn inspiration from is Fred Perry's character Ayane. She's quite kind and sweet while being very fond of children but due to her eyes she makes them cry. They're naturally scared of her and most adults are as well.

Now when I go the kind and carrying path I tend to be inspired by Belldandy from Oh My Goddess. Though she fails at implying power horribly.

I usually wing it, I mean I might have a general idea of the type of feeling I'm trying to get across with my character but that's it. I don't think I could ever mould it on myself, I think I would find that a little unsettling lol.
