I mess around with the sliders until I find a face that I like. I've tried to recreate my likeness in the game before, but it always comes out looking so wonky, I just give up.  I do have a tendency to stick with a face once I figure out something that I really like, so most of my characters all tend to look the same.  Sometimes the make up may be a tad different, or eye color/hair color may change, but the basic features remain the same.  I could never make a good Hawke in DA II, so I always stuck with the default.

In terms of appearance, I mostly just tinker with the CC until I come up with something I like the look of, but I usually have some sort of underlying character concept that informs what that appearance should look like.

Back when I first started playing both Origins (09) and DA 2 (11) I didn't think of anything like that, it was only after several playthroughs that I decided on a head canon and came up with back stories for each one. I decided to have my head canon heroes to all be female as I don't think there are enough strong female heroines in gaming, also all are human and all of them are homosexual.

The Warden: Claire Cousland, Warrior, Dual Wields Swords, has a diplomatic personality but still has a sense of humor. Her look I actually based off someone else's Warden but changed several things to my preference (short red hair in 3 hair ties, green eyes etc), her back story I based off on clues in game, she was raised as a warrior so she is a tomboy, doesn't care much for her affairs being decided, speaks her mind and hates formalities. She realized she preferred women when she came of age, having several trysts with the female elf servants but the first woman that she really liked for was Iona but we know how that went  and the first woman she fell in love with was Leliana.

The Champion: Claire Hawke, Mage, has a sarcastic personality to deal with the tragic events of her life, I always liked how default female Hawke looked so I always use default female Hawke with the blood smear which in my head canon is actually a scar she earned in a altercation with a certain Qunari in Lothering. Unlike The Warden, Hawke always knew she preferred women, having several one night stands with her sister's female friends and one she actually liked until she was killed by the Qunari Sten and in her rage she helped bring the beast in while hiding her magic and that is where she got the scar, Hawke always held a grudge for the Qunari but she didn't let it get in the way of earning the Arishok's respect in Kirkwall. After loosing both her brother and sister and then her mother Hawke hides her grief with her humor. She found a kindred spirit in Isabela who reminded her of herself, sarcastic and a love for women.

The Inquisitor: Claire Trevelyan, Warrior, Two Handed Swords, Since the warden had red hair and hawke had black hair she will probably have blonde short hair and brown eyes, she will not care for her noble upbringing, she wants to be seen as a normal person and not all that interested in religion (she is not atheist however). She will have a witty personality but will be serious when she has to be. She keeps her sexuality a secret until she meets the elf rouge Sera who brings her out of her wall she has built around herself. When not on quests or saving the world she will be at the Tavern with Sera enjoying a drink.

All my heroine's have the same first name because in my head canon I role play that Andraste is either her last name or a name that people call her, like if her real name has been forgotten and that her real name was in fact Claire and so certain women born with this name are tied to a certain fate/destiny that ties them all together.

I try to make my male humans look as damaged and inhuman as possible.

In essence, baby-eaters.

Usually 1 & 2. For the character's physical appearance - hair, skin, facial features etc, I'll use another character or a real person as 'inspiration'. For clothes, tattoos, etc then it'll be according to culture, social class. E.g I'd happily stick a Lavellan in gear like Merrill's, but I certainly wouldn't put a Trevelyan in it.

The first option describes me well. I do let the race/culture/class guide me. For example: in DAO my Dalish archer wore and used only Dalish and elven stuff.

edit. As for the appearance: I plan to create "blonde Scandinavian" Lavellan. I want to separate him from my "Native American" Mahariel as much as possible.

Sometimes I have an image in my head of what I want to make my character look like, but I rarely go through with it.

Usually I just fiddle with sliders until I get a face that satisfies me, and go with that. :S

This.

If I don't end up just going with one of the defaults (which I often do, if they look good) or the character's 'iconic' appearance, I'll just move the sliders/options around until it produces something I think looks good.

For male character, I either model it after somebody I know (actor, person) or after my own fantasy.

For females, I always model and play them after myself.

1 & 2.

I try to come up with a solid character concept before firing up the game. I've learned that the first one has to be unusually fluid in morality because I'm not entirely sure what curve balls the story will throw at me. So I'm going True Neutral Human Mage first time through. His aesthetic will reflect that.

Also depending on the alignment and character concept I settle on I'll begin looking at outside sources for similar characters. If I like some of the characters that come to mind I'll try to incorporate some of that into the character creation process.

I wing it although I do have one quirk, all of my characters end up with blue eyes. I guess it's the one part of me I put into the game.

Previously I've picked a default head I liked and tweaked it. Adjusting things like hair, eyes and skin but mostly leaving facial structure the same to avoid embarrassing mistakes.

I'm hoping that Inquisition will be robust enough that I can pursue particular, varied, looks I feel fit with the character. Though I may just end up falling back on making a small aggressive blonde woman again.

One of my Shepard's ended up with the most embarrassingly huge lips and cheekbones, I thought it looked good in the CC but in game it was really bad. I don't think I was able to complete that game.

Heh, I basically don't touch mouth sliders ever because of that, though I don't think I ever managed to make a Shepazon in 1 or 2 that wasn't weird looking in some way.

Same answer as in the other thread, just wing it with whatever looks nice enough to me, no preconceived ideas at all.

Yup same. I'll tinker around for a good long time until I make a face I'm happy with, don't base it off anyone really.

The ones that don't look like me are usually female. When that happens, I make them look as young and full of life as possible, like a kid or a teen. They also all have different eye shades, like orange, or purple, or white. They all also have white hair when they're not directly inspired off of me. My brother accused me of working specifically to make all of my characters look like animes though because of how young they look and how their face is shaped. My guy characters are...decent. And the ones that are made to look like me look like me, so says everyone in my family.

For me it depends on what kind of playthough I am doing. For instance.

Wizards I want to be skinny and pale. I seem them as people who spend a lot of time in Libraries and out of the sun never worrying about eating and never getting sun. Not putting thought into appearence. The typical Wizard D&D archtype. Those are the kinds of wizards I grew up on. I usually make them more cold blooded as well. Usually they care more about magic and the occult then relationships and people.

My Warrior tanky types are Big and Boistrous. Beards are a plus and lots of scars if that is available to add. I play these charectors like lovable buffoons that just want to hit something. Honorable and full of life.

Assasins as selfish handsome flirts. Clean shaven with handsome haircuts. Lack of scars or maybe one small one handsomly placed.

For me it is about having the appearence fit the playthough. I won't have a Wizard be huge with strong muscles and a lot of scars. That jus doesn't fit to me. Why would a wizard be buff? He has to spend almost all of his time mastering magic when does he have time to lift? If he has scars he is a bad wizard for letting enemies get that close and not being able to heal himself.

Wing it. My characters end up usually with blue eyes(I really love blue eyes) or sometimes green eyes. Also red or black hair(my two favs). Never brown(my natural hair color) and almost never blonde.

I find it most fun to pick a celebrity/real person to base my character on and carefully sculpt them in the cc. I find the result more authentic, because I force myself to include the flaws as well.
My first playthrough will be Tomas Trevelyan, starring Tom Wlaschiha. I'm sincerely hoping the cc for Inquisition will be detailed enough for me to get relatively close!

For the character to the left of this text, and the human noble warrior I rolled after beating the game as all origins, I just took what I think I look like and added a dose of awesome. For characters that are not meant to look like me, it's really trial and error. I basically just click a button and see if I think that improved the character, and if it didn't I try to get back what I had. This is part of why I like PC gaming: my two systems are my laptop and the family PS3, and the latter I have to share with my brother. This laptop, though? With this laptop I can take as long as I want to perfect my character aesthetically.

I usually just play around with the CC sliders until I get a face I like.

Generally this. I may have an image of the look I want in my head, but in the end it all depends on the options the CC gives and how good they look.

I usually model my PCs after fictional characters with similar personalities to what I'm planning on playing.  So my Human Noble Warden was based on Regina George, my Hawke was based on Belle, and my Inquisitor will be based on STAS Lois Lane.

I liked one of the heads in Neverwinter Nights and since then I try to recreate it. Scholar Ling and one of the presets in Kotor fit the bill. They influenced my Shepard. Mass Effect brought the character to the next level. My Shepard influenced my Warden and very likely my Inquisitor.
