How do you determine the Aesthetics of your characters?

I always want to create a big burly bearded guy along the lines of Blackwall, unfortunately i have yet been able to do so in any Bioware Game, or any game really beyond Skyrim and Guild Wars 2

Usually I just play around with the sliders until I get something that I think looks cool or appropriate for that character. With the Inquisitor I'm hoping to be able to give him a severe look. Someone who looks like they mean business & isn't be trifled with, to go with the ruthless Lawful Neutral personality (think Stannis Baratheon or Judge Dredd) I've got planned for him. Something similar to this painting of a Roman legionary, hopefully:

four words.
Edit: Okay, that's a lie. I usually go half rugged, half bishie. I strive for balance in all things.

Same, my first Inquisitor will be a Qunari Stannis Baratheon with a sense of responsibility when it comes to personally protecting the innocent

Depends on the character really , if its a Human Male i always make it look like myself , any other race/gender I create them to look like what i imagine for that specific character.

Taking pieces of myself mold them into separate wholes or using scraps of my alter ego

My initial character will be Laegneth Lavellan a tall imposing female Elven mage. Born in the Free Marches, the first word she uttered as a child was "Magic". The elders of Clan Lavellan saw this as an omen, which set her on the course of becoming the Clan's First. Her striking height, 5' 9", blazing red hair and green eyes add to the air of confidence she has always conveyed.
She is highly intelligent and scholarly, spending many hours at a time studying the "old ways". One day she wants to visit Kirkwall and the infamous scholar Merrill to see her Eluvian.
The Keeper's decision to send her to the Chantry was devastating. Her insular life had not prepared her for the brashness of the human world. She found their lack of understanding of the world around them infuriating. Her disillusionment was compounded when she had to fore-go her creationist magic for the utterly despicable arts of destruction.
Never having much time for elven males, the crude approaches made by the hairy human males, confirmed to her that the Mother had made a mistake when determining how bipeds propagated their species.
And then the devastation occurred.....................

we sticking with the character bio for Noctis (male, human, mage)
i want the idea of him living rough and surviving many battles to be reflected.
so ill go
long unkept hair if possible.
Tanned skin (to reflect living in the wilderness)
Broken noes
scars
full beard
I may or may not include a tattoo depending on designs.
eyes i will attempt to give off as close to a Deep saturated "glow" as i can, hinting at his under lying power.
the rest such as hair colour ageing i'll do what feels right

It varies. Sometimes I have a clear idea and look up references of different people for inspiration. Sometimes I have a rough concept in my mind and go to the character creator to try and bring the idea forth without references. Other times, I fiddle around until something looks interesting to me. That doesn't neccesarily mean pretty or handsome either. Something that's distinct to me in some fashion, generally. While I do my best to make my characters each distinct from each other, there's definitely some reoccurring preferences here and there: I seem to generally favor darker skin, hair, and thick eyebrows. Plus most of my male characters have some form of facial hair, even if it's only a little. See my avatar as one such example (he's my canon Warden).
I almost never make myself, as I prefer to not play self-inserts. Occasionally I'll fiddle with a CC just to see if making something close to myself is possible at all. Once I did make a Boss in Saint's Row III/IV look similar to me just to see if I could... liked the base, changed a few details (mostly the hairstyle and I made her slightly fatter and more muscular than me), and actually ended up playing her. Beyond that, it's pretty much whatever I make up whether it's my imagination or taken from photo inspirations.

I like to base it off of the family members on the character, if there any in the game. Current playthrough of Human Noble in DAO has Teryna's green eyes and Teryn's hairstyle/color (based off his facial hair since the head stuff is all grey).
I always like to make my m!Hawke's look similar to Carver...usually same hair and eye color, similar facial structure. I just love Carver so much and I like to imagine Leandra watching the two of them either argue or discussing things and thinking about how much they look alike and can be so different but love each other.
I have an idea for my inquisitor, mostly based off the fact that I'm going to be forever boyfriends with Dorian so I don't want us to look alike.
I also sometimes aim to have a different hair/eye combo then all the party members....for diversity, I suppose. Or I just want to be special.

For my Qunari Male Mage, I intend to make him look as much like a beast/demon as possible. A withered and scarred face, the largest white beard possible, but I hear their actual hair options are not big pickings but I hope I can get -something- otherwise he'll just be bald. And the horns have to be as massive, curved, and splintered as possible.
The motivations usually change per game, but I like characters who's appearance matches their personality. In DA:O, my Dwarven Rogue (Make way for the true Lord Aeducan!) was regal in every way a dwarf could be, being one with high Coercion skill and can maneuver his way around any viper's nest while also being able to kick some serious ass in serious style whenever he needed too, otherwise he could suave his way out of anything. If a Mage could be a Berserker, I think that's what my Qunari will be.
But I'm not sure yet. Kooky and unhinged characters usually don't go over so well in BioWare games. At most, evil characters are just heroic assholes that occasionally make some really dick moves/kick the dog/enslave the child moments. So I might make my Qunari more pragmatic and wise, while still having his unhinged side coming out every so often. I can never seem to make a truly evil character in BioWare games. For one, I can never truly be a villain protagonist or be a bad guy, just a giant dick head and that doesn't jive well for me (strangely enough, for me I usually go full White Knight or Dastardly Super Villain, a man of extremes).
It's up in the air at this point. But for Inquisition specifically, the description I mentioned above will work whether my Qunari is good OR evil, because this is the first time I can make something truly inhuman looking in a BioWare game and I'm going to enjoy it.

I tend to take inspiration from DnD races that I love, ie drow, teifling, dwarf and human obviously, but that's what bioware gives me and I try to recreate those races as I see them in me brainpan.

3 and 4. I usually try to make my first character look like me in facial structure unless the CC is too limited. Then I just go for a sweet face and big round eyes since I always play as a goody goody first.

I usually pick from hair/eye colour combos that I like... I'm a big fan of red hair and green eyes, or black hair and blue eyes for example. I'm also a massive fan of the more fantasy-based colouring, like white hair and purple eyes (Targaryen enthusiast if you couldn't tell), and I'm super pleased purple eyes are an option this time around!

With humans, I try to be ethnically accurate (more or less.. still room to be flexible). So far with elves and dwarves, I tried to match the family NPCs a little (with Dalish and Circle elves, it was more free-for-all).

Only with white hair and slightly more muscular build. Going for the narcissistic Tevinter Necromancer Inquisitor also known as the Tevinecroquisitor.
With devilish handsome looks, superficial charm and a forked tongue - I am ready to seduce, manipulate and deceive my enemies and allies alike.

Same here! I pay an lot of attention to genetics when it comes to this kind of stuff. Like, it only made sense to play an caucasian human noble considering your parents appearance, while it made sense to play an dark skinned city elf considering your mother appearance. I wonder if they will show us family members depending on our origins, and I wonder if their skin thone and other features will match our Inquisitor appearance.

I usually pick a preset and then fix things that bother me. So basically winging it from a base.
I do have a bit of a tendency to make my males black haired and my females redheads though. That's usually the one constant in my characters.
