I'm sure we've all seen the gameplay where the Inquisition fights through waves of venetori to encounter Alexis who then opens up a rift and summons demons up out of the ground. Many of his abilities look very rift-magey. Anyone else suspect that's what class he is?
Is Alexis a Rift Mage?

"Alexius" is probably a rift mage, yes. I doubt any other mage flavor will have the ability to manipulate rifts.

I wonder how a Rift Mage might Differ from a Necromancer if both are (might be) summoners of a sort.
I REALLY want to hear some info on specializations.

Alexius, yes, sorry lol. I realized that I miss spelled it twice a few minutes after posting and was too lazy to edit it. I also wonder how rift mages will differ from necromancers, but if Alexius IS a rift mage, I wonder if we too will get to summon shades and wraiths as he did in that battle scene. If so, I wonder if we will be able to strategically command them around like we can our other party members.
I do wonder if we only have a limit of one summon at a time though. If you look at gameplay videos, there is more than enough space for one more party member slot before the radar at the bottom. I wonder if this is where our summon will appear.

As far as I understand it, you rip open those rifts in order to dispatch some demons before permanently closing it.
Why not just close it to begin with? we don't know yet, but I'm sure there will be a reasonable explanation.
As for using these demon outpourings as a weapon? I don't think so.
The Inquisition will not be popular if we started abusing our powers.

You dont rip open the rifts, it looks like it reacts to your closing it and so some demons come out and whack you.

I disagree. If you listen to Cameron Lee being interviewed, you will hear him say "we're gonna tear it open" at 10:27

ohh right. well now, that's interesting.

Yes, that is what I was thinking too - the whole rift spiel should be explained in game. The devs are being vague about it on purpose.

enemies have been summoning demons since dao most were blood mages i would say he was a necromancer i hope we can kill are companions in bring them back as are slaves.

Alexius is a necromancer, he used forbidden magic in his son Felix FFS.
He opens a rift during combat. GAMEPLAY =! LORE.

Well, FFS...can all Necromancers open rifts? I was under the impression that was Rift mages' ability?

Given we don't know what either class can do, we cannot say what abilities either has. We can guess that the Necromancer will summon/control undead in a manner similar to the Animate Dead spell. Given that, it is highly unlikely that the Rift Mage will use rifts to summon demons as that would make either class redundant.
