I started using these little guys and once I got over the "support character" mentality and equipped them with good guns I can contribute significantly to the team's damage output and switching to a support role when the others are in trouble. However I'm still in the dark about the melee cloak and shield. AFAIK the cloak does not boost damage and does not deactivate when taking actions, so its main use is for dropping aggro. Do pugs usually mind getting aggro dumped on them if there is only direct benefit to the volus? Usually I only use cloak for escaping bad situations and reviving.

For the melee shield I only use it to block banshee warp balls. Can it block other things, like praetorian missiles, grenades etc? Though I did stun a marauder that sneaked up on me and paladin headshotted it... very satisfying.

The ideal volus to batgaunt with is the Volus Protector Vanguard. Charge + Heavy melee.

Very simple:

1. Put on Batarian Gauntlets V and use any shotgun with Omni Blade V
2. Punch everything in the nuts (Optionally, you can go invisible and then punch them in the nuts)
3. Shield Boost when you lose your shields
4. Thats it

Everything you need to know about Volus heavy melee in here, with some Shield Boost stuff thrown in too. The heavy melee grants around one second of full damage immunity and then around 50% damage reduction for as long as it's maintained. It will also regenerate a little of your shields so it's useful to stave off DoT attacks that you couldn't dodge or block when Shield Boost is on cooldown.

You're right that the light melee cloak provides no damage bonus and is purely to drop aggro. However, there is a separate cooldown for the cloak depending on whether you were running or walking when it was activated so you can remain invisible nearly constantly if you get the timing down.

I should probably know this, but when they refer to "real/actual" DR, does that mean DR adjusted for the out of cover penalty?

Yeah, it means the level of DR you'll actually get in game. So you'll only take about half damage when in the bubble.

I wouldn't worry about the pugs if they get aggro dumped if the volus is taking advantage of it and killing them as they go get aggro on your teammates.

Another use for heavy melee aside from it aiding the volus's survival, if used in conjunction with an arc pistol. In a scenario when you have a charged arc pistol shot aimed at a banshee that is about to cast warp at you and then use your bubble melee, it automatically releases the charged shot, so you can basically blocking damage while at the same time doing damage to the enemy.

Would be nice if you could charge stuff up while in melee animation.

On a side note, I think I should use volus more. Engineer looks like something that can contribute in many situations, for example. Although as of late I hesitate to use things that require reaction and working with timings of 1 second and less. I try to tell myself that it's because of me playing off-host and whatnot, but I guess we know the truth :P

Oh, and thanks for reminding me that I wanted to look up something on DR mech.

Edit: Done. And hoo boy it is messed up.

Summary
- The volus HM is hereafter known as a shell.
- The shell can be cancelled early by pressing the melee button.
- When the shell detonates, it will also do damage in the same radius.
- If the shell is cancelled early, the detonation will not inflict any damage.

Test data

I think i do damage as soon as the shell is cancelled ? Or at list when i get the sound ... not sure anymor

Played a round with each of them yesterday. I just struggled with the engineer long cooldown, maybe cause hurrricane close range too.

Vogloveguard was veryfun even if i did n t kill so much with melee. Kishook stasis sniping was quite relaxing against cerberus.

I'm gonna try out and refine some Volus play. I love new features in games and mastering the learning curve.

For the heavy melee use the Mercenary against Cerberus... find that last p***y Nemesis hiding on the map and deploy your Decoy and Drone and then melee bubble. You can single handedly surround her and make her just stagger about between you and your pets... ideally done after the rest of your scurby team has bled out ;)
