Yeah I guess it's a mix of being subjective and also how you were taught. In school we were always taught the way I've been speaking about and that's why it comes across as wrong to me. I would've been told to correct it in school, heh. I never even thought that other English speaking places would have it another way but now I know.
This situation confused when playing through Origins (I only finished it last weekend). I went through the Circle intending to save as many mages as I could and when Cullen asked me to kill them all I refused. I got to the top and killed Uldred and then realised there were no mages left to save and Irving was apparantly already dead. I don't even understand what happened there, I guess I accidentally killed them? I didn't want to replay it though and decided to just keep true to what happened in my game.
What probably happened is that you didn't use the Litany of Adralla when Wynne prompted you to. When you don't all the mages turn into abominations/die, which makes you automatically side with the Templars.
