Has it ever been confirmed by any of the devs that Bethany did turn herself in? I was under the impression that remain the subject of fan speculation rather than confirmed fact. I always felt that bit of narrative was poorly executed; if Bethany did turn herself in, there should have been something in Act 1 to foreshadow that she was considering it. As it stands, you come back from the Deep Roads and it's just a done deal with no explanation or context.

There is a small dialog between Bethany and Aveline that suggest Bethany is considering to join the circle.

  • Aveline: I'm sorry I couldn't get you more information about the Circle, Bethany. It's difficult without naming you.
  • Bethany: Thank you for being discreet. I don't want the templars at my door.
  • Aveline: No one does.
  • Bethany: Let them corral the troublemakers. I just want information.
  • Aveline: Right. Right.
  • Bethany: It sounds like I'm trying to convince myself, doesn't it?
  • Aveline: I wouldn't have said. But yes.

I thought Anders was going to be my favorite character going into Da2.  After playing it, I hate him.

I've got the feeling that Cassandra will ****** off my Qunari Warrior and human mage Inquisitors, but this rivalry will eventually lead to romance. I might disagree with Cullen due to my prior encounters in Origins and 2 but otherwise I like the selection of companions and advisors.

Hmmm. How about that. I don't think ever I've seen that dialogue (only played DA2 twice before I couldn't stand looking at the cave any more). When does it trigger?

Just walk around Kirkwall with Bethany and Aveline in the party in Act 1... it's one of the earliest dialogues between them.

It's one of the random party banter when you have Aveline and Bethany in your party in act 1.

Dunno how I never noticed it then. I think I'm going to do one more run through DAO and DA2 before DAI, so I will look out for it.

Cole is already shaping up to be pretty polarizing. I don't mind him personally, but he is

Spoiler

So it's totally understandable why some people hate him.

I agree with Cole being a controversial character in some respects, but unless he does something pivotal that turns the whole story of the game (the way Loghain and Anders did), I don't see him drawing quite the same level of passionate argument they did.

I think a frustrating or divisive character can be a good thing for roleplaying and party dynamics. That's what I found with Sten and Morrigan in DA:O. And I think Anders is one of the most interesting characters in the franchise solely because of all the rage he inspires from me and everyone else. I finally managed to get him to side with the Templars in my last playthrough of DA2, and it was awesome.

Cullen has probably already anger a lot of male players already for being prettier than them.

Lots of choices.  Cole, because of the whole spirit/demon thing (not because he's a murderer, all the companions and advisers are.)  Cullen is a templar - Chantry tool.  Leliana is a delusional ex(?)-bard who has merely switched personal affiliation from Marjolaine to Justinia.  Cassandra is a seeker - Chantry tool - with some serious anger management issues.  Vivienne is vehemently pro-Circle, which doesn't sound promising for those who think the Circle's broken.  Dorian is a Tevinter mage who probably knows a lot more magic than what he'd like to share.  Solas may be an ancient elf, and might just decide to let the humans tear each other to pieces so the elves can rise again.  Iron Bull may be a security issue with the Qunari.  Blackwall is or was a Grey Warden, and will likely be very biased about things having to do with wardens and darkspawn.  Sera has underworld ties to Red Jenny, and may have been the little girl in Denerim that got the box from Irving's desk.

Josephine and Varric are the only ones who seem not to have any strikes against them, which means one of those two is likely to have one of those typical last chapter plot twists that makes mystery fans throw books at walls.

If I had to guess, I think Vivienne will annoy most players because she's been described as having a lot of negative characteristics... but on the other hand, some players like snobbish characters who talk down to everyone. I've even heard people hoping that Vivienne frequently insults their PC... so who knows. I don't think there will be a polarizing character this time around, at least not among the party. They all seem pretty focused on the mission, so whatever problems we have with them will differ from player to player.

Social masochism? Now that is interesting..

The character who supposedly will anger us might not be a companion/advisor. It could be Morrigan.

How can she when she won't be around to disapprove of our every actions?

There are always companions I don't like, but I really hope there isn't another Anders. I don't like hating characters who are not named Joffrey.

My assumption or guess was always that it was Dorian. He's still a Tevinter after all.

And his moustache is one of those ones suitable for twirling, so it would make sense for him to be a villain.

If we think there will be an outright betrayal, my money's on Solas.

There's something weird and big going on with elves / control of the Eluvians, and I think there's a high likelihood that Solas has met a certain Fade being with shadowy goals that appeared in TME (not the choice spirit, the mysterious one... trying not to put spoilers here).

That individual seemed really shady, so if Solas is working for him/her/it, it could be Bad News Bears for the Inquisition.

I suppose Iron Bull or Blackwall are also possibilities, if the Qunari or Wardens try to pull their strings. Or, in Blackwall's case, if somehow Corypheus hitched a ride.

Does it have to apply to a companion? What if it's the Inquisitor? What if at some point in the game, you could turn on everything you've done and side with the Elder One?

It might be Varric. He's probably not going to be as friendly and carefree this time round, given Bioware's record with returning characters.

He's also posed like Judas in that shot of the Inquisition mimicking The Last Supper.
