Hello all,

I have played both DA games, but have not finished them (maybe finished 40% of each). I do plan on buying DA:I, so my question is how connected are the stories? Should I take the time to finish them? Thanks for any responses.

Well, the stories are really, really good, so why not finish them while waiting for DAI? It could be considered a self contained story, but to not get the full picture by playing if you still have the games would be a waste.

Hum....you still have time to finish them if you want . There are returning NPC from previous games , and it probably be explained in the game who they are . But yeah , I recommand playing them so you would know if you have to side with a faction...you know why you are doing it .

Each Dragon Age game is essentially a standalone story with a few inter-connecting plot threads and recurring NPCs. You can start DAI fresh without ever having played the other two games.

That said, playing the first two games will enhance your experience a bit. At the very least, look up a synopsis of the plots.

You can play DA:I on its own. but you will get much more context if you play the other 2.

There's time to finish them before DAI is released. I would. It may help to choose what you want for your world state when using the Keep.

Surely, if you haven't even finished DAO or DA2 even once, what's the point in considering DAI? Or what does it even matter to you how connected the stories are?

You don't seem too interested in playing Dragon Age...color me confused.

You should try to finish at least Dragon Age Origins, Awakening, Dragon Age 2, and the Legacy DLC, as these will probably tie directly into the plot of DAI. Reading Asunder would probably help too, but that's more of an extra credit assignment.

You can go through the games relatively quickly if you stick to the main quests and follow a walk-through and play on an easy difficulty (since you just want to see the story).

I'd finish them, but if you don't feel up to that then have a read through DA wiki to get yourself up to date with the characters and possible story endings for both games. That should be enough to give you a good idea of how to shape a world state you like in the Keep.

I'm actually doing just that. I started Origins early this year and gave up on it at first, but Inquisition lured me back. I just finished Origins and Awakening. I'm just wrapping up its DLCs and then I'll be moving onto DAII. I have no idea if I'll be able to finish II by the time Inquisition comes out, but I'll try.

If you don't want to play through both games - which is perfectly understandable - just read through the wiki. It's pretty detailed. It won't be anything like the same experience but it should do the job. The Dragon Age Keep should make it easy for you to craft your own version if you want to do so, without having played the games or you can just go with the Bioware default.

Thanks for the replies guys. I may power through both games doing only the main quest. I enjoyed Origins gameplay more than DA2, something a little off with that one. I didn't finish either game because I was deployed and ended up giving my PS3 to my brother. I bought another one on the cheap along with a PS4.

Play them if you have time and the inclination, don't if you don't! You won't need them going in, it will be designed for new players to understand. It will probably be a richer experience for those who have played through the first two and imported their custom world state, but that won't diminish new players experience at all, IMO.

Congrats on being home again, OP.  I hope you get to enjoy this game all the way through.  As everyone else said, both games are worth playing, both because they provide background for the story, and because they're fun.
