Study recently came out that shows a correlation between the release of violent games... and a *decrease* in assaults.

 

The study authors were intrigued by this finding, and then repeated the analysis for violent movies. The same correlation was found.

 

Seeing violence, apparently, is cathartic and for many people, relieves the need to actually commit violence.

Contemplating serious answer...

 

While it is unfortunate that killing is so casual in many games and I believe it desensitises people to violence, several things:

 

1. Films have far more gratuitous violence than games in general, and although you're not actively causing the violence it's still unpleasant to watch

 

2. ME3MP enemy factions are mainly monsters and machines - so it's more like fighting nightmares when it comes to reapers/collectors/geth. While cerberus are more like other humans, given the lore they are also "monsters" so it is not like playing the latest military shooter which makes mockery of events that happen in the present.

Well, to use Single Player powers, all you need is the in-game console. To use MP powers you still the console. Every power up to Resurgence can be used, but beyond that requires DLC Editing, .pcc package streaming, and coalesced edits. Basically, use I went Bonus Round IV of this thread about using MP powers in SP. It takes awhile to do, but it's fairly easy. 

 

I did mention this before though, I can only use level 1 each power I add to myself during the match. My Tact. Cloak was the SP version, and because I modified the SP TC already, I'm getting 100% damage boost at Rank 1. The Multi-Frags were level 1. When adding powers to yourself within a match you have to suffer base damage and cooldown since the powers don't take your power + cooldown bonuses into account until they're refreshed. You have to go into command mode every time you want to use an added power.

It's stupid to pin it on one thing. The entire culture is desensitized by technology taking out normal human interaction. Personal interaction plays out on twitter, facebook, etc now. The video game violence might and I stress might contribute to a small increase in violence but likely anyone who is "pushed" to violence by a game wasn't that damn stable in the first place. I don't assume it's ok to shoot someone in RL because I do it in a video game. If there was any correlation I would have taken a sledge hammer to my toaster after playing Geth Platinum a long time ago.
