I really enjoyed the friendship conversations of Sten in DA:O.  They felt unique and deeper than a regular friendship in some way to me; you could feel the mutual respect and trust between him and the Warden.  Also, he reveals much of his life and the way of the Qunari to the Warden.  The parting conversation at the end was great, too.  I don't resent him for going back to his homeland.  Heck, I don't even mind that he's making a report about Fereldan.  I respect him as a friend and foe and his role in his society enough to let him go freely.

Another friendship from DA:O that I greatly enjoyed was Morrigan, being a "sister" of sort to her as a female Warden.  Some of her dialogue really hit me in the feels, and I was genuinely sad by her farewell.

In DA2, I would say Fenris, but you're mainly talking about friendships and not romances.  I know an intimate relationship involves deep friendship as well as love, but it still feels like cheating if I say him.   :P  Besides the smexy, broody elf, Varric will always be my Hawke's best bud.  His caring personality along with my diplomacy went well together; it felt like my Hawke and him had each others' back throughout the whole game.

Sten, just cause he stuck with my insane Grey Warden all the way to the end, and even said that I was the only human worth meeting. It brings tears of joy to my eyes.

I really enjoyed Morrigan in DAO, she really opens up to you and you see another side of her as the friends ship progresses.  It feels really honest and raw, I love it.

I also loved Fenris from DA2 actually, he has sort of a gruff personality but he really makes a turn around towards the end and it feels as if he starts to trust you, I especially love it when playing a mage.

Finally probably Nathaniel from Awakening, you start off from probably one of the worst possible places and it just gets turned on its head towards the end as he grows to respect you.

My favourite:

- Morrigan x female warden

- Fenris x Mage Hawke (non-romanced)

- Isabella x female Hawke

- Aveline x Hawke

and of course: Varric's the best.

Zevran: A big part of it is that the conversations with him just flowed naturally. My Warden got approval from their chats really easily, and it felt less like 'meta-gaming' than with Morrigan. He was also very easy-going with a lot of moral choices (besides the elf-killing ones), and often his preferences lined up with my Warden's. It just made it all feel more natural.

I like that it starts off with genuine interest in Zevran's life, with sweet little touches - like his gratitude at receiving the Dalish gloves/Antivan boots. Especially because those come from the Warden listening to him and being considerate of him. The best moment is definitely when Taliesin shows up. Not only does Zevran fight him alongside you, but if his approval is high enough, after the fight he asks if he can keep travelling with you. Finally free for the first time in his life, and the only thing he wants to do is follow his friend into all kinds of danger.

Finally, on my first playthrough, I romanced Alistair, and he sacrificed himself. I was pretty broken up about it, so I was very grateful at the 'victory party' when Zevran said he wanted to keep travelling with the Warden (and according to the epilogue), staying with her.

Isabela: For similar reasons to Zev. If you show her that you genuinely care for her and have her back, she returns with the relic because she honestly can't abandon you. No matter what, once you've invested that friendship, she's there for you - making her the only companion besides Varric that sticks with you regardless of your choices in the end. The conversation at the start of Act 3 is great - she doesn't think she's good enough to associate with Hawke, now that you're the Champion, because she's just a 'lying, theiving snake'. Your options are to tell her that she's better than that (rivalry) or that regardless of how she sees herself, you still care for her.

There are a lot of others I love too... Shale finally calling the Warden 'you', Morrigan seeing you as a sister, Sten's kadan, Wynne's grandmotherly-ness, Fenris and Merrill knowing they can rely on you no matter what. I also really like the change in relationship if you get Carver into friendship and make him a Warden. It really makes seeing him again in MotA and Legacy absolutely heartwarming.

I loved Oghren and Alistair in Origins. I always feel like as cool the other characters are they are the only ones I would call friends (Morrigan was my LI, she doesn't count on this). Alistair was that guy I loved hangin out with, he was a nice counterpart to my warden's darker view on things, and sadly he learned some hard truth from the warden. With Oghren they both had some past they didn't like talking about, and as much as they had fun in the end they respected each other, that scene before you go into Denerim in the end if you don't bring him with you just sums up why that friendship is so good to me. I loved seeing him in Da:A, he was the old friend my warden needed to really get used to the new place.

For DA2 it has to be Varric, but not exactly because of Varric himself. Don't get me wrong, he's great, but one of my best friends IRL is just too similar in personality to Varric (he also always picks dwarfs when playing fantasy games, pity he has only played DAO). Running around in DA2 with Varric just feels like going for a walk with my friend. And I don't know if it counts but I have to mention Bethany. When I was a kid I always wanted a little sister, I don't think I need to say more.

Edit: In DA2 my LI was Isabella, even when I set out for her not to be. Thought I should have mentioned it.

What is it about those friendships you enjoy so much?   I'm asking since the question is part of the OP.  I'm also mainly curious and I've been getting a kick out of reading the various responses from posters explaining why they like certain friendships so much.  :)

Hey, no problem.  That more than works for me.   :)

@Teen Same question: What about those friendship arcs do you enjoy?

With Morrigan, I felt like the friendship with the female Warden was really good for her.  It allowed her to see that not all women were like her mother, or naive/gullible like much of the villagers were like in Morrigan's eyes.  It also made her goodbye to my Warden all the more touching.  This is Morrigan's first real friend, a woman that actually understands her and cares about her.  She's quite lonely.  The way her voice breaks when you have to say goodbye makes me a little sad every time.

I agree. I found it really interesting how my female Warden and Morrigan really developed a trust over time. That was very well done, and I agree with you. I just wish I could've gotten my love Alistair and my bestie Morrigan to get along better in that playthrough.

The other friendships I find really interesting in DA:O are Sten and Oghren (continued into DA:A). Sten and I didn't get along my first playthrough because my Warden was too nice and not in-your-face enough. When I had a more aggressive character and earned his respect more easily, it was a very interesting relationship. I like how his tone and attitude changes. As to Oghren, I got him late in DA:O so some of my interest in his friendship is how it develops in DA:A but taking him to the surface in DA:O from bringing him into the Wardens and helping him get his life together in DA:A was interesting to me. Like with Morrigan, I felt I had a good influence on Oghren, and that interested me.

In DA2, I think the Hawke/Bethany relationship is the most interesting. I don't know if I can ever really call it friendship though that's what the meter says. I've seen all iterations (Warden, Circle, dies in DR) though I've never seen Carver live to Kirkwall. I find a Hawke/Warden Bethany - take her with me on the 2 DLCs - to be the most interesting. Warden Bethany gets hardened in a way that intrigues me, and it feels like we have an intense bond. I think they did the sibling stuff really well.

Other than that, it's Varric and Aveline, the folks you can't romance who have the most promising friendships. I was all "aww" when I saw that Varric still considers Hawke his best friend to this day. Me, too! I always play a woman, so I like the idea of Aveline and Hawke being two tough but very different women standing with each other throughout the years. I always support her but tease her a little. I love how easily ruffled she gets but how loyal she stays.

All the bet Fenris stuff is in his romance, IMO, and I've never friended Anders without romancing him. I don't care for Merril or Isabella at all - I tried all different options and found them interesting as characters, but poor as friends. I never felt a real kinship or bond with either of them. I guess I don't feel like friending either of them changes them for the better. I enjoy Merril's rival options but not her friendship, and Isabella is too much her own woman for me.

DA2:

Hawke/Merrial - I just love Merril she is so cute I just wish to hug her and squzee her she is just so adorable.

My favorite is probably Varric, but it depends on wich character you play as. I played as a human warrior in origins and one of the consistent themes of the character was that he respected power. In that playthrough I really enjoyed the romance with morrigan and the freindship with Sten. Isabella, Oghren and Alistar are also some characters that I loved in the games. They, including Varric all seem to be more genuin freinds with my characters throughout the games.

Lessee here, from DA:O; Shale and Leliana.

Shale was just hilarious. I found her hatred of pigeons especially endearing. Unique little quirks like that can go a long way toward making a character relatable and memorable. I just got one word to sum her up: EPIC! B)  She might even be my fav out of them all! She and my Warden are so bff's. I miss her so much.

I loved talking to Leliana. Though I disagree with her regarding the Chantry, my Warden really hit it off with her. My favorite parts were when you gave her the nug and when you got to talk to her about shoes. "Sometimes a girl just wants to have pretty feet." Made me feel delightfully girly and gave me all the warm fuzzies. I definitely want more of that. ^_^  I relished getting to kill Marjolaine. That wretched, vile, evil stain on humanity! How dare she hurt my sweet, precious, adorable Leliana?!   NNNOOOO!!! NOT OKAY!!! Bad Marjolaine! Very VERY BAD!!! Friend or romance, I just can't get enough Leliana.

From DA:II; Varric and Merrill.

C'mon, who doesn't love Varric? He's just so darn likable. He's everyone's bro and you all know it. He's just so sweet and easy going. Never have I come across another character or real life person who's so gosh darn easy to talk to. He's got a genuinely good heart, and I love how loyal he is. I also found the dynamic between him and Merrill downright precious. Just wanted to initiate a group hug every time they were in the party together and would start talking. The feels! He's obviously only ever gonna be a friend thanks to his painful past. While I can accept that...in the words of Isabella, "But the chest hair..."

Speaking of which, Merrill! Cutest thing ever! I just adore her! I especially loved it when you had her,  Varric, and/or Isabela together! Oh lawd. Funny thing is, there were a couple 'o times I was just as confused as Merril about something. Guess maybe that's why I like her so much. I can also be somewhat dense and naive...also stubborn. We have that in common too. As for friendship/rivalry or romance.....meh. It's a tossup for me. Liked her as a person more than I liked her relationship with Hawke regardless. If you supported, she remained obliviously rooted in her own stubborness. Rival her, and she beats herself up way too much. "Don't try to save me.." Save you? You made one lousy mistake with that dang mirror. It's not like you're a terrible person in need of redemption! All you needed was someone to really listen and provide some real guidance. Yeesh! The Keeper of her clan wasn't any better. Not only did she refuse to trust in Merrill's judgment, she went so far as let herself be possessed when, ironically enough, she was trying to protect Merrill from the same. Way to go dumb dumb. Now poor Merrill has to live with that on her conscious and your clan is without a Keeper!  *facedesk* Really wish the game had given me an option to put them all in their place, verbally speaking of course. I wanted to tell all those stupid elves off so BAD! This is this and that is that now kiss my...

Since I don't know all the characters being introduced in Inquisition yet, I'm going to reserve judgment for the time being. I have a feeling, though, that I am going to adore Dorian. Oh, my curly stache! Fuhget Ser Beefcakes! Mmm, mmm, mmm. I can't be the only one who could just sit there all day staring at him and have the best day ever, can I?  Why are the hottest ones always gay? Meh, here's to hoping Iron Bull surprises me and actually grows on me. I ain't romancin a Warden! <_<

As friendships go I would say Zevran. I only spared him because since I figured I would get more use out of him by sending him at darkspawn and letting them kill him.

But in a party full of people who bemoan their crappy childhood, Zev had the worst of them all yet whined about it the least which was refreshing. That I found him hilarious just made the decision to spare him in subsequent playthroughs that much easier.

I liked almost all the ones from DA:O in different ways. The only character I, as a player, never really warmed to was Oghren -- but even so, he had some interesting things to say for the characters who did get along with them. Between the rest of them, I can't very well pick a favourite. Possibly Morrigan, or Shale, or Sten... but then again, possibly Alistair, or Leliana, or Zevran (although my first character had him as a romance, so I tend to think of that first, his friendship is also very good).

In awakening, I thought they were all fairly interesting, but you can't get to know most of them as well. I'd say probably Nathaniel would be my favourite of those, with Sigrun and Anders as the runner-ups. Justice is pretty different in that regard, but also good. Velanna, for the one character I had who really clicked with her, was also a good one.

As for DA II, the only character I played wasn't really fond of most of the party, so I only really saw much out of Fenris, Aveline, and Varric. Aveline and Varric had good friendship arcs, I thought, although the way conversations worked in DA II made everything feel a bit less natural to me than it did in DA:O. Fenris was as a romance for that character, but he also seemed a good friend, although several options that I think would've made sense for friends as well as romance were filed as flirts, so maybe not.

DA:O: I loved most of them, but my top 3 are probably

Morrigan x female Warden, the developing sisterhood, was just so awesome and my warden still believes, she should have been able to follow Morrigan through the mirror, because you just don't let your friends go alone into dark places. (And old god babies need babysitters too)

Oghren, because he seems to be a debauching drunk on the first look, but then you get to know him and get to know his regrets and selfblaming ... and watch his attempts at a second chance ... and it's development right before your eyes

Sten, because you question his worldview and he questions yours. And my head-canon tends to interpret it as a "lovestory without romance"

DA:A:  Sigrun, especially if you use a bugfix

DA2: Aveline, because she is the older sister my Hawke never knew she wanted. And I just love that she is always trying to do the right thing, it doesn't always work, but she tries. And she has my Hawke's back, no matter what happened.

Isabella, for her growth over the story arc and her snarc.

Varric, probably my most favorite character/friendship arc. He has Hawke's back, snarks even more then Isabella and is the reason, why most Hawke (of mine) are unromanced.
