Hawke/Aveline - Maybe because I know a friend that I have this type of relationship with.

F!Warden/Morrigan - Saw my Dad doing it, and her 'We're Sisters' conversation hit me right in my feels. It's one I'd never done, because my F!Warden kind of hated Morrigan.

Isabella,Varric/Merril - It's just so coot how protective of her they get, Varric always bailing her out of trouble without her realising it, and (If Romancing) Isabella threatening you.

Wynne/Shale and Shale/Sten - These are some of the most interesting and humorous conversations in DA:O, in my opinion at least.

Sarcastic Hawke/Varric - A Bromance/Frienship to span all of the ages, I mean. The stuff they say, even when it was terribly punny - hurt my sides.

I dunno why, but I sort-of shied away from pairing together any of the 'preachy' sorts. Leliana/Shale, Sebastian/Fenris,Anders , Anders/Merril, or Anders/Fenris. It seemed like over the span of the 7(+) years, none of them ever really learned to get along, or at least shut up about it when we were running around...

Oh! Sebastian/Sarcasti-Hawke. Nuff said, "A bow is better than family". Am I right?

Sten: He may not be overt as his declarations of friendships, but it's the little subtle signs that really matter--how he respects you after your fight at Haven, that smile when you return his sword, calling you "Kadan", stating that he will not look for you on the battlefield when the Qunari invade. The best stuff comes if you pull an US, like him stating that he found "only one" Basalit'an in Ferelden. And bowing to your Warden's remains--Qunari don't have any special reverence towards bodies, they consider them just empty husks. Bowing to your Warden's empty husk is really big for him.

Morrigan: She's a very close second to Sten, and I think the only reason she's second is because I prefer her romance to her friendship. But I have to admit, that friendship is very touching. At first it's just supporting her, showing her that not everyone is out for themselves and that she can "always rely on [you]". Then it comes to her discussing your love life, and then calling you her sister, and then THAT GOODBYE at the gates..guh. Claudia Black really earned her paycheck that scene.

Varric: The one guy who never betrays you (short of the Fade dream), always supports you, worries about your relationships, and tries to cheer you up. He's like Garrus transplanted into a dwarf body. Thanks to the new conversation mechanism (grrr) you don't get nearly as many of those friendship moments, but what you do get is so very touching.

Isabela: I love her rivalry friendship because it's like her relationship with Aveline--you nitpick and fight and badger each other, but back the other up when push comes to shove. Her "100 Rivalry" convo, where she says you've inspired her to be a better person, is just a really nice convo, especially if you play a snarky!Hawke.

In DA:O I played a Male character so the dynamic is VERY different with morigan she will be jealous of Leliana period if the warden likes Leliana because the bard is "in the way" for the ritual. So its not really possible to get a great friendship with her, Its possible to be friends but the story told is a bit uncomfortable simply because its should be given Morrigan's plans.

I enjoyed learning about Shale but meh I wouldn't call it a great friendship. I found the male warden got support from Love intrest Morrigan or Li Leliana more than any friendship. Alistar should have stepped up as the senior warden but he lacked character so I always had a hard time repecting him, granted it had to be written this way be kind of a sucky game if you just did what Alistair ordered. I felt like the companions where well written but I got the opinion you were suppost to feel a bit isolated in that story arc.

In DA2 I played a female Hawke (because of the voice acting) and I felt they did a really good job writting the friendship with varric. The rest of the companions meh. On a whole i thought the mechanics of how the comanions worked in DA2 prevented me from liking them. i couldn't talk to them as I played i had to "visit" them and only after a set trigger was toggleded would the visit result in anything. It felt contrived. In DA:O i could learn about them in a rather organic nature. Ironically Varric's friendship developed more from the cutscenes with Cassandra and the ones in the deep roads vs the actual mechanics of the companion system.

All in all I felt the DA2 companion system kept me from making friends when i was suppost to have all these companions as friends and others as rivals. i mean we spent years together, but it just didn't work. It always felt contrived, only varric seemed able to break free of the limits of the system for me because of the narration of the story.

This doesn't mean i don't have fond memories of the companions or I didn't enjoy having certain ones in the party it just means I never felt there was any STRONG friendships.

Seconding these two. I've long maintained that Sten might be the most interesting character in Origins, because you can explore so much of his world view that's just alien, and he's got a lot to talk about. When characters so often come down to "likes x" and "hates y", I love the fact he doesn't function on such a basic level, mainly due to his adherence to the Qun. You really have to work to get inside his head, and earning his respect is always one of my favorite parts.

One I also like is Oghren - though he does backslide in Awakening, the pre-Battle of Denerim talk with him if you've done everything is one of my favorites.

Sten can be surprisingly heartwarming by the end.

I found Shale annoying at first (constantly disapproving of everything I say), but she too can have hidden depths.

DAO: Sten, Morrigan and Zevran. They are so worth the effort. Sten makes you feel like you've earned it, Morrigan is so touching and Zevran's loyalty is amazing.

DAA: Sigrun, Nathaniel. Sigrun is so lovely and Nathaniel finally warming up to the Warden is wonderful.

DA2: Aveline and Isabela. Aveline always makes me cry with her condolences. Her experience is very much like my own when my father was dying and I find it so comforting. Best friend you could ever ask for. Isabela is just awesome. So funny and actually quite complex.

Nathaniel Howe & the Cousland Warden in DA:A

Particularly considering the recent history of their two families.

For Origins:

Morrigan- I adored her friendship arc so much more than her romance arc. The way she gets emotional and tingly after realizing her own social shortcomings and seeing she does have others who care for her really grew the character on me, far more than a romance arc ever did. Even if she disapproves of heroic type characters, I like that she is willing to disagree and occasionally make smart remarks but not totally up and leave everytime the Warden does something she doesn't like (or, Maker forbid, disagree with her). She's like that friend you love deep down in spite of all the crap because you know she's going to be there whether she likes it or not.

Sten- Love having him as a friend, even if his circular Qun conversations are a pain to get through. The first time I had him call one of my Wardens 'kadan' turned his character from irrelevant to likable.

Shayle- The whole dialogue with her was rich, and the more she liked you the funnier it got.

Wynne- A companion that asks how YOU are doing and looks out for YOU, even if some of her advice is unsolicited? Yes! Loved her since my first ever Origins run.

For DA2:

Aveline- By far one of the best friendship arcs. She basically lends her sword to help your family against the darkspawn and watches over you like an older sister. Even in a recent run where I had her on full rivalry, including the scene where she had no more words for Hawke, in the end she encouraged Carver to reconcile with me before the fight with Meredith, not to mention the last conversation before the final battle she still stuck around despite driving her mad. Gotta love that lady. She's a huge softie.

Isabela- The crazy friend you love, even when you hate her. Having her as a bff, dirty puns and all, really adds to the experience. In a party full of broody types, she lightens the mood and reminds everyone not to take everything so seriously. And when she has your back, she really has it. (Harkens back to post-Arishok tavern scene. She pushes Hawke away because she doesn't want anyone too close to her, yet their friendship prevails and she learns to trust others. Love it).

Varric- Even if he's not my favorite character (*dodges rocks from potentially blasphemous statement*), he's awesome as a friend. Another one willing to ask how YOU are doing and not asking you to fix his life. I felt his conversations allowed us to develop Hawke better and much more personally.

Hawke/Aveline to me it felt like you had to earn her respect No matter what **** you got up to she would stand right beside you, Even tho it went against what she stood for.
