From a causal glance, the N7 Slayer looks like an awesome class, but I can't get it to work right. First the kit's powers are haphazard. Biotic charge is awesome when it works, but when you take into account the vanguard, despite countless forums of complaints, still is bugged where charge still seems to fail more often than not on host and off host is a nightmare making it unreliable at best and useless at worst; sorry but I don't like to have to gel or depend on a teammate every 10 seconds because a power decides to not register. Phase disrupter is also an amazing concept and like biotic charge seems useless with how often it either misses or just doesn't fire. Finally you have biotic slash...great the only power that's reliable with the downside of annoying everyone due to it's noise, screen shaking, and sending every mook flying to the four corners of the map.

In a nutshell how do you use the slayer without either ending up dead do to failed powers, spamming biotic slash, or turning into a soldier with a teleport dodge?

Edit: This is besides host the games to mitigate the power bugs as most people seem to have problems on my host.

The standard way to play Slayer is simply Charge into Phase Disruptor spam.  Talon w/ Disruptor Ammo is fairly popular as far as weapons go.  If you can't Charge then the only good ways to PD spam are with a Volus or GE sidekick.

You could try a Biotic Slash spam build if you are really having such a hard time charging.  You can try to be more of a lone wolf during the game so that BS doesn't bother people.

Also just want to point out that BS as an abbreviation for Biotic Slash is appropriate in my book. :)

Realistically, if you don't have a great connection you might want to try a different class of character.  Charge isn't nearly as bad as it was in the old days where any latency could send you to inaccessible portions of the map.

I have never had a problem on host, rarely off-host.  It may be a problem with your connection.  I spec Biotic charge 4b, 5b, 6a.; Phase Disruptor 4b, 5a, 6a.  I fire phase disruptor, then bio-charge to replenish shields.  Talon for any finishing shot.  Slayer 4b, 5a, 6b damage/power damage) and I fully spec fitness since he is so squishy.  Keep in mind he has an (IMHO) awesome heavy melee.  Light melee offers damage reduction.  I use the melee a lot.  I don't do biotic slash--not the way I enjoy playing the kit. Cyclonic mod (desired), strength enhancer, commando package, and I find cryo ammo or warp ammo works well.

If you can't host and rarely get a decent connection when playing with other hosts then you're probably better off with a different character like capn suggested. The Slayer's dodge, melee, and two of his three powers are all quite badly affected by lag which is presumably why Bioware thought it was alright to give Phase Disruptor an uber-buff in one of the last balance changes.

I am not sure what to advice here since I don't have so many connection issues with the Slayer. The most popular builds are 66356 or 66066 with a light weapon (often Talon) and disruptor or incendiary rounds. With a power amp 4, he's an unstoppable force who can destroy spawns in seconds.

I run 66653 with venom/falcon and disruptor ammo.

Charge > PD with priming in between is the main attack strategy. Biotic slash is there to detonate BEs, and to soften up spawns before charging. Slash also helps in killing drones and geth turrets so that the chances of getting staggered after a charge are less.

Besides that, try to be aggressive. The slayer excels at that. On-host, he is pretty deadly. Off-host, he is challenging to play mainly because of the delay in PD. That said, on hosts with minimal lag, you can still play a moderately aggressive slayer if you can get used to the delay and predict enemy movements and stuff like that. If you want to experience the slayer at his best, hosting is the only way.

So... Let me understand: you want to know how to play a Slayer effectively off host? Well... Just change character, and off you go.

Try chargeless build (w/ krysae, for example), it's pretty fun.

Learn to dodge like a champ. This kit really is dependent on your playstyle. You need to be on full tilt the whole time you play.

Try everything out. Usually I skip on the slash unless speccing for teamwork. Melee is good on this character for mooks. I suggest get a decent teammate and run some silvers after promotion to get a feel for what you like. Try all the powers, their all good.

1. Host

2. Charge whatever is in view

3. Spam PD til you lose shields and Charge again

(both Charge and PD should stagger the crap out of all nearby enemies which should keep you safe)

4. Shoot between 2 & 3 (preferably to prime enemies with ammo which 2 & 3 will detonate - Disruptor Ammo is best for this job)

5. Watch everything die with an ugly Kai Leng smug on your face

Playing Slayer off-host is determined by the host's connection. I've been in a games with the Slayer where it felt just like being on host, and those were great games, but since you'll never know if they have crap internet, you need to have some sort of strategy in mind when playing him off host.

Yeah the Slayer is truly a beast kit on host but does suck off-host if your connection is bad, my advice is to always put 3 ranks into Biotic Slash and use Geth Scanner, when you join a game, test your latency first, if connection is okay, then go with standard Charge -> PD play style, if connection is really bad, you may want to hide behind walls/covers then spam Biotic Slash, and only use Charge/PD when it's safe.

Like what others have said, lag is a huge factor in how well he plays. If you're like me, and your connection is downright terrible, playing him off host isn't really an option. He will be completely worthless. And even if your connection is fair then you're still off probably playing as someone else. Lag just makes him too unreliable.

I have only recently started to feel comfortable with the Slayer. I use Falcon + incendiary/disruptor, Talon secondary for guardians.

Shoot, PD, Shoot, PD, biotic charge to set off TB and replenish shields, PD, PD, PD. Whoever gave me the advice to prime first, then use PD before charging -- thank you! It makes a world of difference to charge into a half cooked spawn rather than charging into a healthy spawn and desperately trying to PD everything before getting gunned down

Highly host dependent character, but not the worst I'd say.

That said, if you insist on playing off host, you have to get into the habit of using charge strategically instead of reactively and try not to get into situations that you can't get out of. And of course you just have to keep doing it to get used to it. #Yolo.

Playing Slayer off host feels like walking through mud :D

Nevertheless, I play him a lot off host and it´s doable, you just need to be less aggressive and lot more cautious and ready to experience some BS. I see the biggest problem with delay between PD shots. On host you can pretty much charge and then disrupt disrupt disrupt disrupt disrupt. Off host it´s more like - charge, disrupt........disrupt......charge, disrupt, charge, disrupt.....disrupt......disrupt.  For charge I just mash the button until it connects

Play on host with a Talon or Acolyte and a proccable ammo, incendiary is my personal preference. Charge and phase disruptor all the things. You can teleport to save yourself if you get in a bad situation. The only way to do it is to play the kit, fail and die a lot, and learn what you can and cannot get away with. Offhost charge and phase disruptor are both delayed at times and the kit feels a little clunky.
