My initial thoughts was to be champion spec & sword & shield (are those two separate choices? not sure) yet I am not sure if I want to be sit and protect or just go in and smash things to bits. The rogue role appeals also so would be nice to hear what rogue players like too, yet I would not ever consider a Mage, just does not appeal to me.
Please help me with my decision. I hope I am making sense in what I am asking for.

Why not purchase a copy of DAO and play both to see which one you like? You can play as a warrior using a two-handed weapon and use a weapon and shield. I've done a playthrough like that when playing as a warrior in DAO. In DAI, I'm sure I will use both in combat when playing as a warrior.

Tearing into groups of enemies with a greatsword is the most fun I had in DA2.

Champion is a spec and sword/shield is a play style. You can be one and not the other, or you can be both.
IMO, Champion fits better with Sword and Shield, while Reaver fits better with 2 Handed. Templar could be either.
I tend to first decide what class I want to play ( you already are leaning warrior, so go with that ), then I decide what kind of personality my character will be.
For me, the character's personality helps to shape the weapon style. Not always, but generally.
If I want to be a benevolent protector, knight-in-shining-armor with a diplomatic type personality, I tend to go with Sword and shield.
If I want to be more aggressive, angry, and ill-tempered I tend to go with 2 Handed warrior. Perhaps you could decide by what feels right for the type of Inquisitor you are planning.

Just wait for the game , hopefully they changed the class and they are more fun to play . And you can decide then . That save you from wanting something then be dissapointed if it isnt to your liking .

For myself, I always play sword & shield (or slash n' bash, as I like to call it) first. It seems just the easiest role for me to fall into when I am having to learn about the game...I will be playing as Templar, since....demons, lol
Once I get more comfortable with the controls and the game itself, I branch out. Might I suggest you give mage a try...it's not easy for me, as I seem more suited to melee than ranged attacks, but I found the Arcane Warrior - Knight Enchanter seems like it might be similar in DAI - a great blend...freeze enemies then go bash 'em...plus I got to wear armor instead of robes. ![]()

Yes, weapon type and Champion are two separate choices.
Sword and shield is more defensive (though this doesn't mean that you can't play offensively) and your attacks are a bit quicker than two handed. Two handed is slower but your attacks do more damage and you have a larger AoE with each swing.
I think it really depends on your play style in terms of whether or not you want to play as sword and shield or two handed. I know for me personally, I couldn't stand two handed in DAO just because of how slow the characters would swing their sword (it honestly felt like it took forever), and I liked that sword and shield allowed you to gain skills/abilities that prevented flanking. That said, I only played as two handed in DA2, where the combat was faster in general, and I really liked how devastating the attacks felt. The combat in Inquisition is supposed to be slower and weightier again, so I doubt very much that I will play as two handed this time around.
As for Rogue, this is the class that I typically play, and I always play as dual daggers (sorry archery, you're just not my thing). One reason I like playing as a rogue is because I never have to worry about not having someone in my party who can open chests (bear in mind that I am one of those OCD players that must open every chest and locked door
). Combat wise, I enjoy how fast paced rogues are and how once levelled up, rogues hardly take any damage while dealing out massive critical damage themselves.
Anyway, I hope this helps

I say give the mage a try. I didn't like playing mages in any game until DA2 and now they are my first option. Might be a turning point for you+ they tend to be the most versatile of the 3 classes

I plan to eventually play all 3 classes, but my first playthrough will be a warrior in DAI because of the Flames of the Inquisition Armor. LOL

Hi guys thanks for the replies, has given me some things to think over.
I think I need to think about type character I want to role play & take it from there.
Weapon & Shield is the traditional tank. Most people find it boring because your main focus is to draw in as much aggression from the battlefield as possible while taking the hits that come with it. This in turn allows your companions and followers to unleash their abilities on your enemies. I would definitely recommend this play style for beginners due to shear survivability. It'll allow you familiarize with the abilities and play styles of your companions without worrying to much for your player character.

I am not sure if I want to play as a sword & shield or 2h warrior, I have never played DA before so I do not know what playing each role is like and I am hoping people who have played those roles before could help tell me what they enjoyed about the most and what they did not like to help me make up my mind.

Rusy, if your not sure what you want to play than i would suggest something easy for your first time, and choose something tankable that is easy to handle.
Sword and Board - Great Templars, Ok Champions.
Two Handed - Great as Smashing Things, High Damage Output, if you build them right they dont go down easy, make Good Reavers, Ok Champions. (not alot fo builds make good champions, the champion just exhists)
If Knight Enchanter is anything like Arcane Warrior? Give it a Shield and let it run around killing things, Also: Arcane Lightsaber, need i say more?
With a Rogue... i guess if you build it right it could be tanky, id suggest Qunari for that extra health their getting if you do, and focus on melee stats.

I have more fun as a 2H warrior, but I prefer the DPS to the support role in general. Sword & shield tanking is similar to crowd-control archer or party healer. Being a meat shield isn't spectacular, but someone's got to taunt and draw enemies, raise morale (buff), and soak up the damage so that the glass cannons don't have to. It looks like there will be more offensive abilities for S&B, and with limited healing, buffing your buddies and de-buffing your foes might be rather important this time too.

I do not understand the last bit quoted here, I thought champions would make a great sword & shield spec considering it's description below:
These powerful defenders protect their allies from harm, standing strong against devastating blows with expert training and fierce determination. Enemies can't kill them—and usually can't survive them.
Why would Templar be a better spec for sword & shield than champion?
Am I missing something, like a talent that makes the difference or something?
Thanks for the help so far guys.

I'm not very good at making combat-builds but in my experience 2h warriors are more focused on damage while sword + shield warriors focuses more on tanking, even though it's possible to make a 2h tank as well. I'm not a big fan of playing as a warrior but they're both fun in their own ways.
The rogue class is usually a lot quicker, but they're squishier provided that the enemy actually manages to hit you.
I wouldn't overthink it, if I were you. When I choose I usually just think "what suits this character? What would this character him/herself have chosen?".

Your tastes seem similar to mine, I usually don't like playing Mages either, I like to get up close and personal. I played as sword and shield champion in Origins, and a two handed rogue in DA II, and for me, the Rogue was more fun.
The rogue is just a very fun class to play as, they can be tactical like a Mage, setting up traps and what not, or they can be up close and personal like a warrior. But they have great moves, fast and furious animations and damage deal potential.
I find the combat to be more fast paced and fun with a rogue, I definitely recommend it.

I loved my Dual Wield City Elf Rogue in Origins, but sadly, that playstyle felt kind of weak in DA2, having a much superior colleague in Archery.
That said, I've bad experience with sword and board warriors in DA2, but liked my S&S Human Noble well enough, as opposed to two-handed Greatswords, which I thought were OK in Origins, but a lot better in DA2.
As a Rogue lover, I'm seriously hoping the combat in DA:I is half-way between Origins and 2...
As for Warriors...
My guess is, sword and board will be more tanky, while two-handed will be about kicking hindquarters and taking names.
That's certainly how it felt in 2, while in Origins, even a sword and board could dish out great damage

Take this questionnaire. Answer it honestly. Use the result to determine your roleplaying.

I personally prefer to use a sword and board, I found the two handed sword fighting to be way too OTT in DA2. It's also because I think people swinging around weapons twice their size should be kept to anime and JRPGs.
It really comes down to how you enjoy playing. Many didn't like the more subtle fighting style that the sword and shield characters did in the previous Dragon Age games. I found it to be my favourite style to use though (along with mage) as the the other styles made me feel like I was in an anime.

I'd say warrior's a good bet for your first go, since they're more protected and have more 'standard' attacks, whereas rogues tend to have stealth, bombs, etc. Especially if you have a fellow warrior in the party, then you're not soaking up all the damage. I went for a dual-wielding rogue for my first playthrough of DAO, but I didn't build her properly, because it took me a while to figure out how best to play a rogue. Unfortunately there were no skill re-spec options in DAO either.

It depends on game what I like to play, in DAO my fav was 2h warrior when dual dagger rogue was most fun in DA2. I haven't found sword and shield warrior to be any fun in previous games, idk I have builded wrongly but there is just no dmg and it's very dull.

I usually don't play as a warrior, because I think rogues and mage are more interesting classes, but I'm replaying as a two handed warrior right now and having a great time. It's fun to switch up the routine sometimes.
