What would you need to see for Inquisition to be considered "Mature"

I think a "mature storyline" would bore many gamers to death.  I think sex and violence are presented in the absolute most immature ways possible in video games.  So, their addition means little to nothing to me.

Consequence is mature to me - and that would also be the value judgement of what happens to a person committing all this sex and violence.

I don't admire the GTA games because they offend people - I would admire something that offensively states that violent people suffer from mental problems caused by the violence they're causing... that sexually promiscuous people suffer both physically and mentally from their apathetic view on sex.

Being outrageously violent or sexual isn't "offensive" to people anymore - being a pathetic loser is totally the "in" thing to be in modern culture.  If you're not indulging in hedonism - you're hardly modern.

Being "offensive" would be making a game that discusses how these things affect people - and that would make most gamers rage (how dare you tell me... blah blah more stupid talk blah).

Heh. I could go with AutumnWitch on this one...

But I do agree. Maturity should be more about the story and what is told than simply the sex and violence.  The age range that most of those playing these types of games are also very different from what they used to be. Yes I played RPG's as a young teen and I enjoyed them. I've always been drawn to a good story. But I've sold video games for quite a while. Most teens these days are either after GTA(a kind of childish game to me personally), sports games, or Call of Duty.  None of which interest me. And I'm only really getting the people that I talk to as friends or play with that are into their 20's or older to really show any interest in actual storylines and plot to their games.

Well the mass media is all about creating conflict and controversy where there is no need for it to be it all about ratings, hell the mass effect side boob fiasco is a prime example or the hot coffee incident.

It's not really the same as the hot coffee incident, unless people actually had to be hospitalized as a result of seeing that side boob.

The Adult I pretend to be:  Complex storylines about interesting characters and the relationships they have with each other.

The 30-something juvenile that I am:  Bewbs!

@TheJediSaint:  I don't think it's necessarily immature to say: "Bewbs!"

Maturity doesn't come from being a morose douche who feels uncomfortable talking about sexually appealing anatomy.

The very fact that you're willing to say: "I enjoy a nice pair of TaTa's." might actually be far more mature developmentally than someone who goes around saying:  "NO!  Dirty pillows are against the Lord!  Refrain! Repent!"

I think the later actually shows a total lack of mental maturity - while the more comical "Bewbs" shows only what you find fun.

Sorry if I took your lighthearted post too far - I just think there's a difference between "silly" and "immature".

Spoiler

Nothing to apologize for.

The fact is, I would like to experience sophisticated story-telling and in-depth character interaction.

I'd also like to see a beautiful woman's breasts.

I'm not sure what that makes me, but there it is.

Decisions/choices that aren't cluttered in cartoonishly defined morality would be a start, I think.

I was referring to the utter lack of worth either of these "incidents" had as a news piece, hell all it did is make more pepole eager to buy and play those games.

As for the last part of your post, someone was hospitalized because of "hot coffee" mod in gta? Really? What did seeing two awfully pixelated fully clothed "characters" dry humping give someone a heart attack?

Less of the immature Party Banter would be a great start.

"Think of the Mayhem!"  <_<

Seriously, the second Iron Bull said that I could tell straight away that I wasn't going to like his character.

Typical "Hey! I just ripped a Man's throat out! Lol!!!" nonsense.

When a child is unable to assimilate the content, it has achieved maturity.

In the case of Dragon Age, I think it depends on how deep we can explore the characters. For me, personally, if I could delve into a character’s psychology and use actual life experience to comprehend their motivation, I could consider that mature.

But isn't Bull suffering from PTSD?

I'd say his carefree attitude is a mask, actually.

Most gamers care about story/gameplay/polished experience, whether or not the subject is offensive is a less then relevant point when it comes to purchasing a game.

Besides, if your game ends up on TV with reporters warning people that the game is evil immoral or whatever such nonsense all it does is make people want to play it even more.

Well as long as you have your own digital distribution software that is... :P

That was long ago though.  People know better now, especially those of us who were kids and teenagers then and know that those 'stories' were just full of crap.

Hell, the crap Bioware got for the ME1 sex scene was freaking hilarious due to the fact that we see more graphic sex scenes in movies than we did in Mass Effect 1.

As long as Bioware labels the game properly with it's rating, then they should do whatever the hell they want with their game and if someone gives them crap about a kid playing it, then point to the rating the game has and ask how did the kid get access to the game and leave it at that.

That'll just turn around and put the blame right where it truly belongs, the parents for buying the game or the retailer for selling the kid a game he isn't old enough for.

Fox news needs to burn in hell.

I mean, you'd think sex was bad for people or something.

"Take a guy's head off, psht, li'll Johnny be fine. Seeing the things that kept him alive ten years ago, uh... no. Let's not."

This **** gotta stahp.

A fine glass of Sherry and a cigar. That'll do.

I hate sex scenes, boobs are boring and violence I seem to just phase out because most games I play are just spurting gore-fests. I honestly wouldn't notice if they added more. It's just blood afterall.

For me, I guess I'd go for a deeper and darker storytelling (Heavy Rain and TLOU are two that spring to mind, having done this decently) and more complex characters. Oh, and older characters as well. The more I age, the more I start to go off all those JRPGS I once loved. Being an overly enthusiastic, and dumb as a doorstop 16 year old who saves the world has definitely lost it's appeal to this old grump.

What's wrong with enjoying the slaughter?

The fact that it makes them Psychopathic? That it makes any scene with emotion in it seem absolutely Ridiculous in comparison?

It seems so stupid that they joke about Murdering HUNDREDS of people, but when one of the main characters are injured or dies the Writers Roll out the Melodrama. Its something I always found so ****** stupid.

It's like the characters(Writers) don't view their enemies as fellow people, but "Video Gamey Meat Shields"

Consistency, Hello?

And this. Consequence and consistency. :)

Also, these characters are basically fighting a war every day. War doesn't leave you unchanged. But could this type of game implement something like, say, PTSD? Or would it just seem too gimmicky?

– "Oh no, Iron Bull's having another panic attack!"

– "Quickly!  Drink a Soothing potion!"

Well for a game to have a mature rating it has to have several things and DAI will probably have all of them

Suggestive Language (CURSE WORDS!)

Blood and Violence

Drugs or Alcohol

Sexual Themes

etc

Mature themes are not always dark and terrible, a mature theme is just something you won't find in something made for families or children. I am wondering how Bioware will handle the sex scenes this time around, after Mass Effect 1 they went to mostly cut to black and yes I suppose it has to do with what happened with the whole side boob thing in ME 1 but since then we have had games released with full frontal nudity and none one say a word (Heavy Rain anyone?)

- Humor. There aren't many things more juvenile than taking oneself very, very seriously.

- A realized character. Grown ups already know who they are and what they want. No journeys of self-discovery.

If bio would give us proper and realistic responses on certain situations for example i find it rather poor example they won't let us use torture in dark fantasy in game with theme "do what you need to do to achieve your goal" just because some peoples would be repulsed by that.

This could be a mark of a mature game, if maturely handled. And knowing you I hope we can leave it at that.

An actually realistic medieval social setting. Bet fans would get a kick out of that.
