Okay first I know that being a Arcane Warrior doesn't allow you to use your Magic in place of Strength for the requirement aspects of bows Because bows don't use Str as a requirement they use dex. However my concern is with the Damage calculation, since bows use 50% Str and 50% Dex, will the Arcane Warrior's ability to substitute Magic for Str work for bows damage calculation in place of strength?

I can see myself raising dex along with Magic and Will, as dex will help with Defense as well as Attack mod so it seems like a good goto stat behind Magic and Willpower.

I'm guessing Short bows are the best option for such a character if this works, as the tier 9 ones only require a 38 dex and have a lower aim time.

38 Dex is pretty high... can't you just use a crossbow?  Anyway, Str and Mag should be interchangeable for an AW regardless of the weapon, but don't quote me on that because I've never tried it.

The problem with Crossbows is the attack animation for them is very long, because of the reload, even rapid aim doesn't help cut down the animation that much, and since a AW doesn't have Rapid Shot like the other two classes it kind of factors in, Short bows have the shortest animation it seems.

True... I rarely found much use for crossbows on my warriors, though they did come in handy in very specific circumstances.  They typically have a lot of power per shot, but their slow speed was definitely a problem... however, I don't remember finding any endgame crossbows that could compare with the higher tier bows like the Mage's Eye, etc... anyway, this all sounds interesting so I wish you luck.  It makes sense that Magic and Strength are interchangeable for all weapons an AW uses, but it's possible that there is something going on behind the scenes that prevents damage from being properly applied to bows...

its still early, but i do have a lv 7 Arcane Warrior now, with a dex high enough to equip a low tier bow, and yes the damage does seem to scale when combat magic is turned on.. so a Arcane Archer does seem possible. My concern now is when to use it and how to get around melee archery.

I suppose you could take spells that slow or lower the enemies chance to hit thus allowing you time to retreat or fire in melee. Arcane Warriors tend to be hard to hit sometimes so this might not be a issue after i get high enough level. Also spells that don't require you to sheath your weapon are going to be a stample.

Hm... looking at the wiki page, it seems like there are some decent possibilities if you want to stick with drawn weapon spells but still have decent crowd control.  Glyph of Repulsion is on this list, which is great for keeping enemies out of your face.  There's also Glyph of Paralysis, which you can use on its own or combine with Repulsion for the Paralysis Explosion combo.  Virulent Walking Bomb might also be nice for a group that's been paralyzed... just hit the weakest enemy with an arrow and you're good to go.  There's also Earthquake and Petrify, but Petrify might not be that great if you don't have a high critical rate with the bow...  Yeah, I can see some potential here... at the very least it sounds like a nice change of pace.

Thanks for the ideas on spell selection, i admit i hadn't given spell selection much thought as i was going to grab all the spirit school spells for the achievements this playthrough lol.

I've also noticed that wearing light armor anything other than massive im guessing will allow for quicker animation so no massive armor in this build thus i need an alternative.

I don't normally use bows for my AW. If I want to use a ranged weapon, I like a powerful staff. But I love using a great-sword or dual weapons for melee :D

From the looks of it, this is going to scale up faster than a staff wielding mage, hence im going to see it through.

I typically wear Evon the Great's Mail or the Reaper's Vestments on an AW.  Evon's Mail is heavy armor, so unless the penalty to firing speed applies to all armor types and not just massive, that might be a good choice.  It's very powerful and gives a high chance to dodge attacks, plus it can be used with Wade's Superior Heavy Dragonscale Gauntlets and Boots for an Item Set bonus.  It's pretty expensive, so you should probably test draw speed on heavy chainmail before considering it...  The Reaper's Vestments are great for any mage since it provides Willpower, Armor, and Defense bonuses, but with zero fatigue.  That might be ideal since you'll probably be avoiding getting hit so that your archery isn't interrupted... since it's a set of robes, this is probably ideal if you want to avoid the speed penalty from armor.  Fade Shroud, Combat Magic, and Shimmering Shield should provide more than enough bonuses to armor and defense anyway...

But of course, all of that is endgame armor that costs more than 100 sovereigns each... until you can afford it, Wade's Drakeskin Armor might be a good choice.

Update, learned a few things. Using haste is bad... it slows down the animation for bows or at least short bows, i haven't tried it with any other bow. Heavy armor also slows down the animation leaving only medium and light armor, or no armor as options for .... armor.

Ouch... were you at least able to reload before you wasted the skill points on Haste?  Most of the stuff leading to it is kind of crappy, but it's not so bad if Wynne has it since she usually  joins with most of that line already learned.

Keep the Dalish armor set (small Dex bonus), Wade's Drakeskin set, and the Reaper's Vestments in mind...

unfortunately no, however i do have a mod that allows me to respec characters by simply drinking a potion, once i get the achievement for mastering creation i'll likely respec and just keep the glyph line of spells and take a different school of magic probably spirit since morrigan is working on enthropy.
