Please No Parity for PS4

In our chat with BioWare producer Cameron Lee, we asked how the PlayStation 4 version of the RPG stack up against the Xbox One when it comes to frame-rate and resolution, and here’s what he said:

I’ll give you a roundabout answer, which basically means I can’t answer it, but the truth is that although we are only a few weeks away from starting to put our first candidates up for certification, we still don’t really know where we’re going to land..and that’s true across all platforms, really. Everything from the resolution to the frames and all that sort of stuff, you just work on that all the way until the very end. But we will certainly be aiming for as absolute high as the PlayStation can go in terms of resolution…at least that. So we’ll see where we go.

So bioware is aiming for 1080p on PS4 :)

My guess? 1080p/30fps on PS4 and 900p/30fps on Xbox One.

There is no guarantee that the PS4 will get the game to run at 1080p, they said the highest they could do.  If the game is impacted by running at a higher resolution they will scale down the native resolution until it runs better.

I will also add that I've personally spoken to Allan about this and while he couldn't tell me much, he did say that they generally seek parity between consoles of the same generation.

I'd like to see 1080p/60fps on both consoles. There are plenty of games hitting that now, that I would be disappointed if they don't.

Diablo III

Dying Light

Fifa 14

Grand Theft Auto

NBA 2K14

Outlast

Project Cars

Skylanders:Swap Force

All run on both machines @ 1080p/60fps so I can't see why DA:I can't.

They do have a deal with Microsoft so I wouldn't expect much.

In many ways, it depends on the developer and how they utilize the system. The complexity of the underlying engine (in this case, Frostbite) also plays a role.

As I said in my first post, while I'm positive that the Xbox One is perfectly capable of achieving native 1080p with DA:I, I expect something around the 900p mark. But that's the absolute minimum I can see happening.

I'm not sure what you're worried about. That the PS4 version is held back because of some kind of third-party deal? Because that's not happening. Deals don't have that kind of effect on other platforms. If BioWare can do 1080p on PS4, they will.

It never works like that in development. Just because other games can run at 60 FPS it doesn't mean now every game can and should be able to. DAI has been developed with the old consoles in mind so that could be a limiting factor. And yes, GTA V was last gen and can pull off the higher FPS but that is because many extra months of development time can do wonders, time BioWare doesn't have. Heck, unless it has changed in the mean time The Witcher 3 will be running at 30 FPS too.

CDPR has already stated they're targeting 30fps for Witcher 3.

DA:I will also be running at 30fps on consoles. I don't see why anyone would question that. It's just a question of what resolution we're looking at on the next-gen versions.

Yeah I've read that and it seems disappointing, but I guess it will take time before the developers learn how to push the envelope with the new gen consoles. I think that is why we are getting so many bumps at the moment because developers are finding it hard to optomise their games for the new consoles.

The developers don't prioritise FPS very much unless it's a shooter.  If they got the game more optimised, they'd probably enable more stuff rather than shoot for 60FPS

Well personally I don't see that much difference is quality between 900p up scaled to 1080p  and native  1080p so as long as they can reach 900p I can't see that it really matters.

The difference is just a little blurriness due to the upscaled image, but other than that it's not much to write home about.

(Also, 1080p is about 44% more pixels than 900p; however, in practice, the gap is hardly a big deal.)
