I recently installed Mass Effect off of Steam and obtained all the DLC as well, completing one full playthrough. I also have a copy of the entire Save folder from a previous install (I did not have the DLC at this time).
My question is about copy/pasting the contents of my old Save folder to my new one. Will copying the old MassEffectProfile file have any adverse effects other than changing what achievements I've earned, etc.? If so, can I simply import just the old save files with no problems?

I don't have personal experience with this, but from what I've read the Profile file maintains some information about what careers you have going on. So if you copy in the old saves they may not show up until you load them under All Careers. Same with your new saves if you copy in the old Profile. But that's not a terrible consequence.
The thing I would be worried about is if you didn't have the same DLCs when you were playing on that old profile. Since the DLCs come with new achievements, pasting your old Profile over the new one could conceivably muck something up - though again, I haven't experimented with that, so don't know. All in all, I think it would be safer to copy in just the old saves while keeping your new Profile, unless you had the same DLC back then.

I didn't have the DLC back then, and that was actually something I thought about after I posted this question. So I think I will just copy the old saves in and not the old profile. Thanks for the help!

Question for Plasto Joe: How did you get a PC cd key from steam to obtain the DLC?

Right-click on Mass Effect under Steam's games list, there should be a "view CD key" option.

It worked, thanks. Apparently the Pinnacle Station DLC is not compatible with the Steam version of Mass Effect. I wonder if profiles/savegames from Steam can be imported to Mass Effect 2.
