What are your thoughts on Rift Mage and Necromancer?  It looks like the Necromancer can summon stuff.  Do you think we'll be able to tactically control our summons like our party members?  Does it sound to you like the Rift Mage may have some summons too?

Great, but the thread is primarily about the questions I posted in the OP.

I hope so! Necromancy sounds like such a fun class. It gives me more confidence to do an evil play through the first time around

Same here.

I am really hoping for some depth and variety within the various specialization trees, and the Necromancer particularly. I want to play my Necromancer Elf as a true minion master, so I hope that there are upgrades or powers that will make our undead thralls last longer; preferably permanently; I also hope that controlling your minions via tactical camera as well as in-game prompts is available.

My dream is to have my inquisitor be a Dragon Age version of the Overlord, or Captain Olimar, with his swarm of undead troops.

That would be badass to summon a swarm of minions, but looking at the party slots on the left hand side of the screen, it appears we can only fit two more before the radar.  Then again, maybe they could also go right next to the current icons, for two columns with five rows.

I think any possible summons for necro will be similar to the dog in DA2. Not controlled and only a mild bonus. I don't think rift mage will get any summons.

Honestly, I would be perfectly fine with only two undead thralls, provided that the game let us keep them a permanent pets as well as let us upgrade them over the course of the campaign.

It would be beyond amazing if we could upgrade the type of undead minion we had access to as our progress in the Necromancy tree increased. Something like starting out with the ability to summon a simple Devouring Corpse, but by the end game we have a pair of nasty Reverants on our side.

I would agree if DAI didn't have a tactical camera, which was the case in DA2.  Think how stupid it would be to go into tactical view to co-ordinate an epic attack and not be able to tell your summon what to do.  Also, the dog didn't have special abilities and I believe many of these summons will, which will make them a vital component of any successful strategy planning done in the tactical view.

About the rift mage not having summons...

"These mages draw upon the force of the Fade, either pulling matter from the Fade to attack or twisting the Veil itself into a weapon to stagger or crush the enemies."

What else could that emboldened portion of text mean?  Throwing floating chairs at people through a portal?

[P.s. only he can look badass whilst pulling that face]

I am assuming here, but I don't think any summons will be of the permanent variety.

Your skeleton summons will basically be creating a skeleton that goes and attacks and enemy and after the attack dissipates away.

As for the rift mage, I am thinking along the lines of opening a portal and dropping something on a target, or opening a portal that lets a demon come out and attack, but closes up immediately.

Possibly the ability to cause an enemy to be sucked into the portal if they don't pass a skill check.

But again this is all speculation and assumption.

Anvils, definitely anvils.

haha dropping a grand piano on someone would be cool.  not as cool as summoning a pride demon at max level, but still cool.

It says matter not spirits which leads to me assuming that you will simply pull things from the fade to attack with. I mean a mage in the fade can create anything they want if they can control their own imagination well enough.

True.  Maybe my imagination is getting away from me.  It just seems like a shame that someone who specializes in controlling and manipulating the fade would not have the ability to call its denizens to their aid.

Sounds similar to Force Mage to me.

My planned characters:

Female Qunari Knight Enchanter: I love melee mages. Arcane Warriors in DAO, using the staff as a melee weapon in DA2 and now summoned weapons in DAI.

Male Dwarven Artificer: Dwarves are the great architects as well as great warriors. Artificers are a combination of both (yes I know artificers are rogues, but really warriors, rogues and combat mages are all warriors). While any race can specialise as artificers, I feel Dwarves are the best fit.

Female Human Templar: With the mage versus templar conflict going on, I feel like the Templar specialisation has some interesting possibilities. Also I love melee mages. Yes templar is a warrior, but templar is a warrior with magical abilities. So bring it on!

Male Elven Rift Mage: The main plotline focuses on the Inquisitor's abilities to close rifts. So why not have a mage who can manipulate the rifts?

Matter is an ambiguous term that means almost anything corporeal. That doesn't disqualify objects or people, but that doesn't inherently insinuate it either.

I wonder what the limit is on what kind of 'swords' Knight Enchanters can summon.

It would be pretty annoying if it turned out that you couldn't summon swords altogether because of a bug in the game that prevented this feature from working.

I just want to know which mage specialisation has the most support magic. I like buffing my big guys so they can go in the thick of things, also buffing ranged attackers is the best :) more DEEPS.
