So we've seen a few of the tarot cards now, but have no confirmation that I am aware of which of the major arcana our companions are depicting.  I thought it might be fun to have a thread where people can discuss their thoughts on what card each companion might be, since I poked my head into a few of the companion threads and people generally had differences in opinion.

Here are the companions in all their tarot-y glory (which I originally found here):

Varric's card is confirmed to be The Lovers.

And these adviser cards (no source, please let me know if you happen to see its origin so I can give credit where it's due):

Morrigan has a tarot card, and is confirmed to be the Queen of Staves (source):

Here are the cards for the Inquisitor's race selection (which I found here):

Inquisitor_cards.jpg

Here are the class tarot cards, which are ordered from left to right as Dual-Wield Rogue, Archery Rogue, Two-Handed Warrior, Sword-and-Shield Warrior, and Mage (source is me):

Here are the difficulty tarot cards, which are ordered from left to right as Casual, Normal, Hard and Nightmare (source is me):

Your thoughts and opinions?  It might be a good idea to provide rationale for your choice(s) as well.  I think this site is a good place to start, for those that might not be as versed in tarot cards and their interpretations.

A few posters have pointed out older threads that were created before the clear shots of the tarot cards were released.  If you'd like to take a look and see what others have been saying about their interpretations, you can find them here and here.

The gay romance option cards have more detail than straight ones.

Does that griffon have three eyes?

And it looks to me like the straight romances have more details. And Vivienne reminds me of Jinx from the comics, but more covered.

I've been talking about this in the Sera thread, but I'm a bit confused about her card. Seems like most people are assuming it's the Tower, but I sort of see The Fool there? Would love to hear other people's thoughts....it is totally possibly I'm overthinking it, haha.

In the Vivienne thread, we've been discussing the contrast between the snakes in Dorian and Vivienne's cards.

Solas' is best. Out of the three mages the only one with enlightenment.

The World maybe?

Iron Bull could be The Devil or Death but neither one quite seems to fit.

Iron bull card remind me of the necro shaman . (dunno if that exist as such in Tarot ) . Cass card look gorgeous , seriously....I would say she remind me of the chess piece the Knight . Although she could be the Queen piece and cullen the Knight due to riding a griffons that make large jump/fly .

Dorian is a Bishop piece . The wizard card ? who is that ? Solas? Anyway , him and Vivi could be a black and white rook . Coles the pawn  , and Varric and sera...hum..varric card look like related to either a tower or a clock . Sera same with the tower..but for tarot I suggested the archer/chario . Although on a chess piece due to long range abilitie they are both a bishop...aiming straight line.

-_- don't ask why I,m comparing them to a chess pieces....had to get it out of my system .

I think IB is definitely the Devil and it totally fits. Excess, power, and all, haha.

Cass is Death.

I've interpreted the snakes as symbolic of how Dorian and Vivienne deal with dangerous but potentially useful objects, people and situations. Vivienne is holding her snake from the tail, as if it's dead or she's trying to keep the fangs away, but Dorian's is upright, and around a rod. Both are holding the snake close to their bodies, implying confidence in their presence. Perhaps Vivienne prefers to eliminate potential threats so as to prevent them from biting her later on, so to speak. Dorian, on the other hand, takes the risk and tries to tame the threat and use it to his advantage. There's also the symbolism of Ascleplius' Rod (a single snake coiled around a rod), which has long been associated with medicine and healing.

Spoiler

Based on these Fool cards I think Sera's bears some similarity. I think Tower would look more dire.

What about the Grey Warden (is that Blackwall?) on the Griffin? Would that be Judgment? I think I've already seen people believing Solas to be Hermit which would make sense and Dorian looks like Magician, especially with the symbol above him. Would Vivienne be Temperance? Iron Bull as Devil, Cassandra as Death...The other two I have no idea.

Dorian has the tools of magic (the book and the staff) so I'm guessing he's The Magician.

The two mountains and the circles in Solas' card reminds me of The Hierophant which is about old religion and old ways. On the fool's path the Hierophant is also a teacher which might be Solas' role initially to the Inquisitor.

Vivanne's looks like Temperance: balancing the light and the dark, finding co-existence.

Hmm....let's see:

Row 1 - the warriors:

Cassandra - Death. Almost a copy of the Rider-Waite Death card.

Blackwall - the Chariot.

Iron Bull - hmm....looks a bit like the Devil, but the symbolism doesn't fit. Dunno.

Row 2 - the magi:

Dorian - the Magician, most appropriately. The infinity symbol makes it unambiguous.

Solas - the Hermit

Vivienne - a white chalice and a black snake, with a circle in a square. Hmm...could be the High Priestess.

Row 3 - the rogues:

Cole - can't be anything else but the Fool

Varric - quite possibly the Hanged Man. Which would be hilarious.

Sera - uh....no idea atm.

Blackwall could be The Chariot, there's the moon, he's looming over his enemies...

Making the horned guy the devil is bit easy, the's money and death but no hints of enslavement. The Emperor maybe?

Looking at these I really do think Judgement is a possibility for Blackwall.

Blackwall is definitely Judgment. I think Viv is Temperance. Cole is the Moon, Varric is Wheel of Fortune.

Probably The Tower.

I still think she's the Fool, haha. It fits her personality better, plus the defining characteristic of the Tower card is that the tower is falling. Her positioning reminds me of the Fool too.

If she's the Tower, I'm cool with it, but with the info we have, I am leaning more towards Fool.

I guess it depends on what school of tarot interpretation you go with? But the Hierophant in Rider Waite Smith (the most well known and one this deck is taking imagery from) is way more about traditional hierarchies, institutions, and the Church. I would expect a Hierophant card to have someone like the Divine on it, not Solas. I'd place him personally as the Hermit or the High Priestess, and from the staff in the pictue, I think they've gone with Hermit. Which makes sense given what we know.

(sorry I'm posting so much in this thread I just love tarot and Dragon Age so this makes my little head spin)

I'm not super familiar with tarot card interpretations, but I found this analysis on tumblr and thought...hey, close enough!

I saw that too. I think it's a good argument for Sera as the Tower! If she ends up being that, I won't think it's off.

If I was going to designate a Tower card though, I would probably assign it to someone whose life has just collapsed. The Tower card archetype doesn't seem (to me at least) about someone who breaks down conventions, more about someone whose convention has just been destroyed.

...actually if I was going to make an Inquisition tarot, I would probably make the explosion at Haven the Tower, because it's harder for me to think of the Tower as a personality type than as an event.  Oh! And then maybe the Star could be the Inquisitor reaching up to the glowy hand or--

See this is where I'm overthinking it a bit. ;)

Well, Sera did lose her playground due to the chaos of the Breach. She wants to fix the world so she can get back to being a prankster thief. So the Tower fits her anyway.
