Is it completely for story content and character development?
Does your romance get a perk or extra stats?
Do you get gifts, money, or access to unique abilities?
Does it effect gameplay at all?

It has no real impact other than enhancing your roleplaying experience. Players that won't romance anyone do not miss out on any gameplay, perks, etc. They will only miss out on the romance specific dialogue options and romance scenes. It is completely optional.
I'm pretty sure it's just a typical romance plot like in the other games. I doubt there will be any bonuses associated with them...
I did like Fenris' and Isabela's favours.
I didn't like the ROMANCE, but that aesthetic part was cool, and I'd like to see it again in some form.
Merrill's just went too far. 'We're an item, so here's an entirely new set of armor', is a bit much.
Yes. Romancing and in the party:
Cassandra: -6 Willpower, -2 Strength, +3 Constitution
Iron Bull: -98% Health
Sera: +3 Cunning, -8 Strength
Blackwall: +6 Constitution, +5 Strength
Solas: +3 Magic, +2 Willpower, -6 Cunning
Dorian: +5 magic, -20% damage against spirits and other Fade entities
Look it up.

So if you romance Iron Bull you become deathly ill? ![]()
Romance will open up some extra content, beyond that, I doubt it'll have a real affect on gameplay. It may affect the narrative in some way, however.

Nothing is too much for my Dalish princess. ![]()
It unlocks the achievement "Won't Die Unloved."

I'm just assuming that romance is a check that unlocks different dialogue and leave it at that.
Edit: Bleh
So if you romance Iron Bull you become deathly ill?
I thought that armour was awesome. Also, companions not changing clothing felt weird/unrealistic.
I love cycling appearances in the Mass Effect games.
So if you romance Iron Bull you become deathly ill?
You might need a wheelchair afterwards.
This ain't persona >_>

never played it. (seriously)
I played only shooters until SOCOM 4 came out. Once I saw every game wanted nothing more than to be as much like COD as it could I ditched the genre.
Last of Us, Mass Effect, Dragon Age, Elder Scrolls.....and a few scattered games like Infamous and Prototype Demon's Souls is all I play.
I hope there isn't. I do romances to enhance my character so I don't want to feel like I'm losing out by romancing the wrong character or when I don't romance anyone at all.

Perks and cash payouts from relationships are kind of rare in games though.. at least the ones I've played. Skyrim was the exception with the Lover's Comfort exp bonus and the profits you get from the "shop" the PC's spouse opens. I wouldn't expect anything like that in DA:I... if you're familiar with the DA:O and DA2 romances, it'll probably be like those. Otherwise, it could become extremely unfair and unbalanced, since there are so many gender and race restrictions involved... plus it would make people romance certain PCs just for their bonus... it just wouldn't work well in this series IMO.

"Make it mithril."
"Really *insert Dalish thing she calls you here* this is unnecessary."
"Nonsense only the best for my Elven goddess."

That was kind of my thinking from the beginning tbh. I didn't fully think it through though. The inevitable **** storm of how this type of romance gets better bonuses is better than this one and that is because of hate blah blah blah.
I probably romanced someone at some point in DA2, but usually I just played through and don't really remember. In DAO yeah Morrigan got it every time she could handle it. One thing I like about Bioware is that you can see the gameplay progression in their games....they literally do get better and better...IMO at least. Such as from ME-ME3 you started with nothing, to getting a single biotic combo, to getting both tech and biotic explosions. While not perfect....I would much rather play a battle in DA2 than I would in DAO. This gameplay feature just felt like the logical evolution to me from what DA2 had (friend and rivalry perks). I won't mind if its not in the game.....The threads would be quite funny and open up some trolling options, but while cool and something I think bioware could really flesh out....if its not ment to be its not really any skin off my back.
btw not saying DA2 was a great game or anything...just that you could see some progression and improvements.
A romance with Iron Bull permanently increases your character's ability to painfully insert large objects into oftentimes surprising locations.
And by that I mean he teaches you to stab bad guys with over-sized weaponry in fun & unique ways! ...what?
