So a thought occurred to me after doing some contemplating on the higher mysteries of life, that the inquisition is something like a French Foreign Legion of dragon age. We're a group whose supposedly started by the chantry, but whose members appear to be from all over thedas, in what could otherwise be describe as a horde of marauding do gooder mercenaries. Essentially we are a fight force of orlais composed of folks not from orlais.

This got me thinking, what if orlais had its own equivalent to the foreign legion? Who would you compose it from?

Personally, I would get a combination of Surface Dwarves, Tal-vashoth defectors, maybe Dalish and City Elves who swore an oath of honor and service to orlais, and of course anyone looking to serve the chantry in a non-templar capacity. After all, orlais being the center of andrastian faith, it stands to reason that what benefits orlais, benefits the chantry.

But yeah, I would say fair compensate and the possibility for land and title in some of the more outreaching areas of Orlesian influence would be good motivators for some eager volunteers.

i think the Inquisition can/should be whatever the f*ck the Inquisitor wants it to be. Keep in mind this order has been non-existant for the last like who knows how many hundreds of years. It's purely a political/military/Fade-fighting power Faction in the World of Thedas that has decided to reuse the alias, name, and mystic of the ancient military order. I can't imagine a Qunari or Dalish Inquisitor fighting in the name of the Chantry and the Divine. Nope. The Inquisition ain't nobady's Legion it's an independent group of Badass Demonslayers  :D

Why do you think our armies wouldn't be from the surrounding area? the only foreigners i know that are joining the inquisition (outside of companions) are Templars who came with Cullen from kirkwall. other than that. we are primarily in Ferelden and Orlais. I don't think we are going to see much Foreigners with our troops.

That said. Tal-Vashoth, Chavaliers, and pretty much armies from Ferelden, Orlais and Nevarra. you could probably fight off anyone.

Idk much of the french legion. But while the inquisition is formed from chantry affiliates we are a independant group like the wardens just general rather than specialized. If anything we are a PMC at worst and at best a NGO or basically the U.N. in some areas

This seems to be a fairly big reach to me. The légion étrangère is a part of the French military, full stop. It has always been a part of the French military. It has operated under the command of the kings, presidents, and emperors of the French since its inception.

The Inquisition does not appear to be under the orders of the empress of Orlais; it might not even be under the orders of the Divine, should there still be one.

Unless some game plot information crops up that challenges this, the Inquisition should be classed as being more akin to the Grey Wardens: a transnational organization that recruits from everywhere while being under the orders of no secular potentate.

An interesting thought, considering most of my Inquisitors will be plundering the s*** out of Orlais.

Seriously though, **** Orlais. Word of God (or World of Thedas) confirms that literally no one likes them aside from Orzammar and the central body of the Chantry.

No, the French Foreign Legion is part of the French army, the Inquisition is independant from the Orlesian army.

Punish the nobility, not the laypeople.

Besides, nobody likes anybody in international politics.  There are no friends among nations, only interests.  This is something that has been said repeatedly, from people like Washington to Charles de Gaulle.  The fact that literally everyone spies on everyone, even allies, is proof enough.  The only people who truly believe in international friendships are people who have no idea how international relations work.

The inquisitor is foriegn. Whatever race you choose, it is impossible to be Ferelden or Orlesian.

If only that were possible. Robbing and/or killing off the nobility on a large scale will always come around to affect the commoners, in some form, rarely ever in a good way.

True, but the universal disgust towards Orlais is so remarkable that it needed its own section in WoT.
