This thread got me thinking...

Which card do you think represent's your character? And even more fun, which card do you think represents other peoples' characters? (You don't know a lot of game world NPCs really well, but feel free to include them if you wish.)

It's all just for fun, and multiple interpretations are always possible. For example, I tend to think of Death as a positive card (the door that closes opens onto a new world), but others may not agree. You don't have to limit yourself to one card. Maybe one aspect of their personality might be represented by one card, and a different aspect by another. Plus, characters can change! Maybe you'd like to talk about different cards for different parts of their journey.

Only two cards are off limits: three of Swords and The Tower. If that's what you're coming up with, pick Death instead, because it's time to reinvent the character.

I don't have time to think too much about this right now, but I'd think of pre-farmhouse Etienne as The Fool: the juxtaposition of innocence and wisdom.

Who knows? If there's enough player input and discussion on this, I may try to draw something...

Edit: Changed my mind about the Tower. If the character is actively seeking to bring about the destruction of the old to make way for the new, that's a whole 'nother matter!

I think that the hanged man would fit for Bartha.

Perhaps in a past-present-future it would be:

the chariot or strenght - death - the hierophant (I agree that the death card isn't a negative one, but it can give people a scare because it is about change)

I wonder why you don't like 'The Tower' and 'three of swords'? For me, the tower could indicate 'work on your ego, or prepare for a hit' and three of swords 'you can overcome any pain that comes/has come your way'. I could actually see Tempest as a three of swords :)

As I said, everybody has their own interpretation of the tarot deck, which is why you really have to find a deck that works for you. If somebody else's imagery doesn't work for your interpretation of the cards, the deck isn't ever going to be more than so much pretty art work. I was mostly trying to avoid cards that a lot of people assign far-reaching, destructive interpretations. For me, the three of swords is about long-term, crushing heartbreak that is only just beginning. For me, there's a need for perseverance, but also the warning that it's going to take a long time to heal. But that's my interpretation, not somebody else's. If it were up to me, I might be tempted to give Tempest the High Priestess, the gate between worlds and the unification of the three faces of womanhood. Or maybe the Queen of Cups. She's definitely a gentle, loving character.

And I'm going to revisit my opinion of the Tower, actually. Because if the character is the actor, the one tearing down the old to make way for the new, that's a completely different kettle of fish. Using that interpretation, I could see Sarel in that role, since that seems to be something that's important to him, as a character.

I like those cards for Sarel and Tempest! But yeah, you can keep on discussing things like this... I like that :)

I could definitely see Tempast as the High Priestess.  This is an awesome question, and I'm going to have to think about it for Tess. It'll give me something to do while I set up the booth this afternoon. :D

At this point in Bel's life, he might be Temperance, the need to maintain balance between conflicting imperatives.

I would see Tempest as the Queen of Cups, although the High Priestess works too. :)

Hmm, if Tempest gets Queen of Cups, that leaves the High Priestess for Laurelin, which might work, as it's a bit "witchier". Although I don't know. The tarot deck doesn't have a lot of nature imagery, unfortunately, at least not in the major arcana and face cards.

I don't really know much about tarot, but I think that either the magician or the hermit would fit Laurelin.

If we relegate ourselves to Major Arcana, then Rael is the Empress.

If Minor Arcana is open, then she's the Queen of Coins

I was actually thinking about the Magician for Mercuriel, believe it or not. Not so much "mystical powers of the universe," but rather "sheer masculine sexual energy". I get a kind of Herne/Cernunnos vibe from the card, but OK, I could see how that might apply to Laurelin... If you leave off the giant symbolic phallus/oak staff he's often depicted with.;) She's definitely got the Magician's nature bond working for her.

Yeah, I don't know if we really need to close off *any* part of the deck for consideration.

Hmm, thinking about it, I might put Tessa as The Hanged Man, voluntarily changing her perspective in pursuit of enlightenment. Some sacrifice is required, but the subject's eyes are open, and they undertake those changes willingly.

I don't know anything at all about Tarot cards so I will just go with Ruth's recommendation for Merc! lol I definitely agree with the sheer masculine sexual energy! Woop woop!

*Merc sweeps Ruth into his arms and kisses her* LOOK WHAT YOU MADE HIM DO, RUTH! lol

My word, it's warm today, isn't it?

I'm glad to see that you're all enjoying the discussion! It might actually be fun to poke around in here every once in a while and maybe discuss your perception of other characters or post changes about your own inclinations about yours as their stories evolve and they change. What's good for them now may not be applicable at other points in their stories.

And I'm going to be honest. As you may have realized, it's more fun for everyone when the game is personalized in small ways to suit the characters. When you post tarot recommendations about your character or others, what you're really doing is giving me plot bunnies about encounters, situations, and even rewards that may appeal to your characters. For example, Laurelin's statement about the hermit, an inner journey to find enlightenment, suggests that an encounter that emphasizes her spirituality might be well received. I haven't got anything specific in mind at this point, but there are a few nebulous ideas floating around in my head waiting for the right time to take shape and crystallize into something that shows up in game. Also keep in mind that not all "encounters" are combat. There are exploration encounters and role-playing encounters. Heck, even party interaction counts.

When we post about other characters, it may help players to see how their characters are perceived, and if it's different from their own perception, these opinions may suggest ways to bring that character back in line with their vision.

TL;DR: Keep it coming!

In the interest of funsies, I'll do each character's Tarot Cards. I'll start with the Major Arcana and list some of the qualities associated with the card. I may do the Minor Arcana in the future, if anyone wants to see.  :)

Bartha: Wheel of Fortune--Development — Activity — Surprises — Approachability

Beldin: The Hanged Man--Acceptance — Renunciation — Contemplation — Humanity

Etienne: The Hierophant--Education — Religious Institutions — Naivete — Incipient Knowledge

Laurelin: The Magician--Conviction — Initiative — Personal Power — Transformation

Mercuriel: The Lovers--Passion — Pleasure — Personal Values — Seeking

Rael: The Empress--Sensuality — Artistic expression — Creativity — Delight

Sarel: The Chariot--Willpower — Self-assertion — Impulsivity — Struggle over enemies

Tempest: The High Priestess--Wisdom — Serenity — Secrets — Love

Tessa: The Emperor--Control — Discipline — Leadership — Common Sense

I really, really like Wheel of Fortune for Bartha. There's room to grow, but there's also an element of chance involved that emphasizes her current transitions. And it usually comes out OK in the end, which is encouraging. :)
