David Gaider confirmed that Templars do need lyrium to fuel their abilities. I'm curious to see how this will be reflected in gameplay. Will we find a cure for the addiction? Can our character become addicted? In any case, I just hope it causes problems. I love me some good drama and this game looks poised to deliver a ship load of it. Hurray!

I didn't realize this.  But isn't lyrium different than red lyrium?  Oh how I wish we could be red templars.

Because Templars rule and Mages suck?

On a serious note, it's a specialisation that is designed to combat mages and magical enemies. It in no way reflects the character's feelings or beliefs.

Templars don't have to take in lyrium constantly to use their abilities. it is just that the more they use the more powerful the powers become and the more resistant to mage magic they become.

I think red lyrium is to lyrium what blood magic is to magic.  There's a connection to Fade abilities, and there's a risk with using the negative side.  Red templars can become those lyrium abominations or profane-like things the same kind of way blood mages can become abominations.

Aren't all the warrior specs the same?

Templar & Reaver, certainly were DA2's specs  and I think Templar and Champion in DAO

DAO had but dropped an addiction mechanic. I wouldn't expect one in DAI.

I hope they do figure out some kind of game mechanic that would allow/require templars to take lyrium potions to use their abilities, but I'm pretty sure they won't. It's a shame, but implementation would probably be klunky.

Templar class has its uses, though I never use it myself.  Rogues tear mages up way faster than a Templar can say "Stop."

Wielding a sickle doesent make you a farmer and owning a gun doesent make you a soldier.

Why? Because i expect there are many people out there who HATE FIGHTING MAGES! I know in origins i do, what with their stupid miss hex spells and their mortality curses and there all around nuisance in the fade nightmare, not forgetting the occasional paralysis and crushing prisons, and the nature damage that emmisarys do that, prior to my last playthrough, cut through me like butter.

Yeah. I hate mage enemies.
