I hope we can raise one of our party members if one of them gets killed off in the story.  That would be sweeeeet.

Inquisitor- "Varric, I order you to fire a volley at that charging darkspawn!"

Varric - "Ugggghhhhhh"

I dunno. I mean, you're right no part of the description given above strictly requires animated corpses, but on the other hand that's a big part of what necromancy is in game like this.

In most games, yeah.  But not always.  I think they were moving away from pet jobs since DAO.

But who knows?  We haven't seen the specs closely yet.

Would be awesome to raise up a dead ogre to fight for you for a limited time. The darkspawn did this in dao dlc.

In "Asunder", Rhys is able to summon a weak spirit to scout for him, no blood involved. EDIT: It was clueless enough to think that suits of armor were actually templars, which kinda messed with the scouting bit. I thought it was cute.

That's how I figured the "animate dead" spell worked in DA:O: Summon a weak spirit into a vacated skinvelope and it mostly follows your orders by virtue of not really being developed enough to have any sort of long-term goal.

My idea for a true specialization was to have you interact with a single spirit, continually summoning the same one to animate the corpses you choose to animate. As you expand in the school, you can influence how the spirit develops, which would influence your abilities. Hunger demon results in devouring corpses, Sloth demon results in shambling corpses, etc. Eventually culminating in the ability to have it animate a group of corpses into a Harvester.

Obviously not how this is going to work, but there you have it.

That would be an awesome specialization progression, I would love to see role playing and character development seep into our skill trees. The idea that your minion is a character unto itself, and develops along side the player would offer even more immersion into the character. IMO.

From a pure mechanic standpoint, I could see this working as a more elaborate version of the Mecromancer's pet from Borderlands 2, seeing as how the summon in that game would change depending on how the player chose to upgrade their skills.

I just hope I will be able to hoard army of undead (even if, maintaining  10+ minions, will cost my mage other abilities, I just want to do for the sheer fun of it).

If necromancer will be limited to one or two minions it will be kinda lame ;/

I want my undead horde as well  :(. Its just so much fun when you can walk into a fight with a small army at your beck and call. I play the Witch Doctor in Diablo 3 as a pure minion master, and while I am not as effective (DPS-wise) as some other builds out there, nothing can beat the smile that I get when I can enter a boss fight, sic my horde on them and then stand there and laugh as my minions zerg rush the baddie.  :D

I would be okay with a single minion provided that minion had very deep customization options embedded within the Necromancer skill tree; something along the lines of companion level customization.

Depending on what "Rift Mage" is like I might make my Dalish Inquisitor a necro
