I just bought Mass Effect today via Steam. After 5 hours of download, I try running the game and within seconds the "Mass Effect has Stopped Working" error message pops up. I see that a few others have had this problem as well, so is there a solution?

Yeah, I'm having the same issue. I reckon I'm probably miles below the recommended spec though given that I'm running it off my uni laptop (a dell inspiron 1520). Kinda thought it may work as I was below the recommended spec of DA:O and that ran fine. Blargh. If anyone does find some way of making this game run then please give us a solution. Don't want to have to wait for my new PC to arrive ^^.

(Although I am quite happy to wait really, I was just wondering if anyone knew what the actual source of the problem was.)

Here's the specs. I know it's a crappy laptop before y'all start shouting at me but as I say, it ran DA:O without any real problems so I thought I may cheekily be able to get away with this.

* Processor: Intel Core 2 Duo T7300 (2.0 GHz/4MB L2 Cache)

* OS: Microsoft Vista Home Premium

* Hard Drive: 160 GB SATA @ 5400RPM

* RAM: 2.0GB DDR2 SDRAM @667 MHz (2 x 1GB)

* Optical Drive: 8x CD/DVD burner (DVD+/-RW) w/Double Layer Support

* Battery: 9-cell lithium ion

* Wireless: Intel 4965AGN

* Weight: 6.4 lbs

* Dimensions: 1.47-1.65” (H) x 14.12 “ (W) x 10.59" (D)

* Ports/Slots: 1 IEEE 1394 (FireWire); 4 Universal Serial Bus (USB 2.0); 8-in-1 Memory Card Reader; VGA Out; S-Video; RJ-45 Ethernet LAN; RJ-11 Modem; ExpressCard 54mm; stereo in, headphone/speaker out and dual digital mics

Hey i'm having the same problem, but I have had the game over a year... I recently wanted to play it since I just preordered the new ME2 and at Launch through Steam, the same Error appears. I'm at a stand still with knowing what to do....

C'mon guys, is there any solution to this? I've just spent £12.99 on this through steam and am itching to have a go at it. Any solutions whatsoever?

I've updated my video drivers and disabled UAC (which both apparently work for some people), disabled Vsync and enabled it again, can't seem to actually get anywhere with it. Always the same error, just the screen goes black and switches resolution and then I get this message with no viable solution being found. Is this just another vista **** up or is it something internal that I need to sort out with my own hardware? I'm inclined to think that it may be a vista thing given that people with all sorts of different rigs are having the same issue. Does anyone know what to do?

Further update on possible solutions that haven't born any fruit.

Went straight into the Binaries folder in the Mass Effect program folder through Steam (where I got it) and tried to run the main .exe file to bypass the launcher (apparently that causes problems for some people) and that didn't work both normally and when run as administrator. Have also verified the integrity of the game files through steam and that yielded no results (apparently everything was fine). I then ran it in compatibility mode with Windows XP and got the same problem that these guys here have "http://social.biowar...6/index/740710" about a General protection fault or something. I'm literally at my wit's end and have no idea what to do. But as I say, these fixes have worked for some people with the same problem so by all means feel free to try those.

Am now doing a full re-download of the game running steam as the admin. I'll update when it's finished.

i had the same problem when i downloaded it from steam, after re downloading it i found in some forum that you have to sign out from steam then right click on the mass effect icon on the desktop, click on run as administrator then the sign in for steam will pop up and you sign back in and it should work it worked for me.

Or just turn off or turn down UAC if you are using Vista or WIndows 7

I'm not sure Tyrus is under specs, the only weak point there is the graphics card. But it should at least run ME1, if not well.

And jordan13D makes a good point, I've heard you may need to grant administrative privileges to Steam itself as well.

Not if UAC is turned down or off. I don't run ME1 as admin and I have it from Steam. Just FYI.

Yeah, thanks for all your help guys. I know I probably am under-spec slightly but that shouldn't stop the game from loading up should it? I mean, I've played games that I've been massively under-specced for before and they load up and everything but just glitch and lag like crazy. I was just under the impression that as I can't play it, it's some kind of problem with my vista/steam stuff rather than my actual hardware. I've done all of the running it as administrator stuff, from uninstalling it to reinstalling it through steam as the admin and then going to the source masseffect.exe and running that then as the admin. The only different thing I've had in all my efforts was when I tried to run it in WindowsXP(SP2) compatibilty mode (which works for some games so I thought I'd give it a try) and then I finally got a message saying that masseffect.exe couldn't be found and that was all under the usual GFP problems that people had when the game first came out. I'm really sorry to bother you guys but I'm totally stumped and just want to get my teeth into this awesome game! But yeah, thanks for all your help, I think I may just wait for my new PC to arrive but I just wanted to see what it was like on my laptop. Thanks very much guys. I'm going to turn UAC back on now and grant steam admin rights, just to see if it makes any difference.

Guh, I've been at this all day. If anyone's been in the same boat as me and has managed to fix this then please please let me know. Just updated Vista to service pack 2 and am currently updating literally everything I can to see if it can fix this.

[just installed service pack 2 (which I believe has an updated version of directX on it? Read in another forum that you need the latest version of directx 10 to get it to work) and still no joy. If I can't find any solutions by tommorow I'm probly just going to delete the local content and wait for the DA:O expansions and DLC's to hit steam. Thanks alot anyhow guys, look forward to ME2 ((And ME1!)) when I have a functional computer :P]

Okay Noob question what the heck is UAC, reinstalled the game to play it once more before ME2 came out and can't get past the I believe it's called splash screen were you choose to play configure or such. And I know my system can handle so it's not my specs, if you want a dvdiag I can see about that.

SOLUTION: Extract english.rar from disk 2 into your Mass Effect 2 installation.

EDIT: Well it looks like I didn't read the OP, sorry about that. People are having this problem for Mass Effect 2 also, the root of which is a crappy installer. Perhaps ME1 has a similar problem.

So might that work for ME1 Problems? Cause honestly I enjoy these games a lot and I really want to keep on enjoying em.

Edit: Well tried what Inverse said for ME1 but da nadda no good didn't fix my issue.

I fixed this issue by disabling my UAC, I reactivated my UAC and it now works fine. Thanks to everyone who replied.

I've spent several hours trying to get Mass Effect to work as well.

Intel Core 2 Duo CPU T6600 2.20GHz
RAM: 4GB
OS: Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit
Display adapter: Mobile INtel 4 Series Express Chipset Family
(Let me know if there's any other relevant info I should provide)

When I try to launch, the splash screen shows and sometimes the screen goes black before I get an error message saying "Mass Effect has stopped working"

Things I have to no avail:
* Disable UAC
* Run Steam, Mass Effect.exe as Administrator
* Run Mass Effect.exe in various compatibility modes
* Run local file integrity check (many times)
* Reinstalled the entire game
* Replaced the OAL dlls (per recommendation on another thread) --> Resulted in GPF errors instead of "Mass Effect has stopped working"
* Updated graphics drivers and all other drivers
* Disabled anti-virus and firewall
* For ****s and giggles, ran it through a different steam account, same problems.

I have tried all of the above separately or in combination with other things.
As far as I can tell, a lot of people have had similar problems, and some of the above solutions worked for them. Nothing has worked for me. If anyone has any other possible solutions, please let me know. The last thing I'm going to try is getting my hands on install discs and installing the game without steam. Maybe I can get it to work properly then?

I'm actually trying to get this to work on a friend's computer. I bought it for him as a gift. I'm using Win7 64bit on my computer and I got the game to work flawlessly on the first try. I really have no idea what's wrong with his computer or how to go about fixing it. I'm wondering if maybe the graphics card isn't good enough (though I'm no longer receiving GPF errors and the drivers are current).

So yeah, if anyone else has ideas, let me know please. :(

What is the specific Intel graphics processor? An exact model. Or at least make sure it has Pixel Shader 3.0 support.

Try using www.canyourunit.com and selecting Mass Effect 2. See if your friend's laptop passes.

You should know better than that. The place is unreliable for anything other than reporting the inventory of the PC, period.

"Display adapter: Mobile INtel 4 Series Express Chipset Family"

All Intel video of any kind is listed as unsupported for the game, everything. I don't think the individual variety makes that much difference, since this game has a feedback system that requires more speed than any but a couple of the very best IGPs (ATI & nVIDIA) can muster when in an empty room. Then, they fail to respond in a timely manner as soon as combat starts.

The chip that has been embedded in the package with some i3 and i7 CPUs is somewhat faster, without reaching the performance level of the Geforce 9200 IGP, or especially not the HD 4200 IGP (current top of the heap).  I would think it would require dropping to EGA resolutions, were they available, to be fast enough in combat (640 by 350 pixels).

Even those much-better ATI & nVIDIA IGPs generally fail to provide the feedback that the game's environmental interaction depends upon, which is why they were all specifically named in the requirements as unusable and unsupported.
