Champion is a tank spec. That's why it's there. It's isn't whitebread so much as a staple. If it wasn't champion, then it'd be tanking oriented skills under some other name.

Warriors in DA2 got along just fine without a whole spec dedicated to tanking, mostly because there was plenty of that already offered among the standard trees. If they make it more of a master strategist, I might be interested. But if it's just a beeflord, I don't care.

They also get a damage bonus against Fade creatures... you know, like the Elder One and his minions?  <_<

True I will give you that Icy but I just want a much better Templar tree thats all.

Some of those skills were part of the Champion spec, from what I recall. They just decided to remove it and make it general.

They could have done the same thing here though, you're right.

Well to be fair DA2 had a Spec for tanking only Hawke couldnt use it it was Avelines Spec and she filled the role of Tank in DA2.

I loved Spirit Warrior, and was hoping it would return, but Reaver is my favorite DA spec, so I wouldn't give the latter up for the former.

And the Devour animation in DA2 was awesome and probably just as exaggerated as mage!Hawke impaling herself in the stomach with her staff when blood magicking it up.

Well, I agree that it would have been nice to see a new spec, but the bases seem to be covered... a general warrior that can deal with magic a bit, a defensive warrior, and a dps warrior... the specifics seem to be window dressing at most.  They also said that not taking a spec is viable, so perhaps there will be enough interesting skills to justify a pure warrior build?

Right, it's because tanking is for the disposable minions.

Aveline can tank anything.

I think the fact we can drink dragons blood and become a Reaver in DAI is cool <_< but making a deal with a demon to be Blood Mage is bad.

I jest, she is my 2nd favorite character in DA2. I just have an extreme dislike for "tanking" as a concept.

I can understand that. Like dozens of other things, RPGs can't get out of the umbrella of D&D paradigms.

I especially didn't like Hawke as Reaver, simply for roleplaying reasons. I felt sorry for the poor bastard who thrived off of "pain" the way Hawke did. lol.

Hawke has a lot of tragedy in his/her life. Reaver kind of puts a whole new spin on it, storywise.

Not because it's dark or evil per se.. it's just sort of tragic to give in to grief like that. I wanted Hawke to be more optimistic, psychologically speaking.

Reaver and Hawke in a nutshell... what doesn't kill you makes you stronger. Most appropriate spec after Shadow IMO.

I liked Shadow.. good one (on my archer).

I hard time with my mage Hawke storylines as well. Spirit Healer and Blood magic are both equally creepy, for the kind of mage I wanted. So I didn't use them.

I liked Berserker and Reaver for a Hawke who I essentially roleplayed as Nier. Turning all that pain and anger into strength to protect his sister and friends.

I admit the story possibilities there work well. It's just that it came off as overly negative to me (more anti-heroic. Which wasn't my concept  at the time).

It's a lot of fun.  I just did one, in fact.  I put all my points into two handed, vanguard, and reaver.  Then I had Aveline bodyguard hawke.  Damage to hawke was damage to aveline, which I dumped a ton of con into.

You know, I was always so focused on the Templar aspect of Hawke that I never put much thought into the Reaver aspect... I always saw it as a source of power, nothing more.  Something he earned when he killed his first mature dragon in the Bone Pit.  I never thought to draw parallels between the spec and his storyline, but I have to admit, this does make sense...

edit:  I think the issue is that I didn't put much stock in Hawke's emotional pain.  Even when his mother died, he seemed sad (depending on dialogue options) but that was it... and there was really no time to even consider what had just happened since we were immediately setting off for another quest.  No funeral, no time spent wallowing around in his house...  so yeah... Hawke seemed pretty emotionally detached from the people around him from what I saw.  But again, that might depend on dialogue choices as well as personal interpretation.

Well, DA2 was basically about Hawke being repeatedly punched in the face for a decade.  It's only fair he learns to channel that and start punching back.

I found the Reaver animation to be bearable but I could NEVER bring myself to use hemmorhage. That animation is just sick.

Honestly if I had a chance the one Warrior Spec I would give the Axe it would be Templar I think the whole thing about it only being useful against Mages/Casters is a little stupid.

I would gladly have replaced Templar with Spirit Warrior/Guardian either would be better in my opinion.

If you specced for it in DA2, with Claymore and Assail from the normal Warrior tree's, you could have insane burst potential as a Reaver/Templar. Following 6k Mighty Blows with 2k Holy Smites in the space of 2 seconds was nuts. I went for Templar because I wanted an on demand damage ability as I was starting to be stamina full already and needed something else to actually spend stamina on.

Having said that, the ability to make normal attacks something like a minor mana clash ability as opposed to a magic drain ability would imo make it a better tree. I also always thought of Templar as being something roughly analogous to Paladins from other RPG's, but without the heal spell that's plainly not the case.

Yeah I always felt that Templar was alot like Paladins as well but like you said no healing spell so maybe its more like a Crusader than Paladin.
