I thought she was adorable, but she was....naive. And like Avelline said "stupid." She means well, but her actions are often very dangerous.

I don't like her. Her voice and personality annoy me and honestly her character model kinda weirds me out though I don't know why. The fact that she is not optional makes me dislike her more.

I enjoyed Merrill, for the most part. She managed to provide an different take compared to most other blood mages; in that regard, I wouldn't say she was "stupid"...she was probably more careful about the way she handled magic than most of the mages in the series. Her big flaw was her poor understanding of people. She had an almost...Qunari-esque way of thinking, in that she held more value in her goal of restoring an artifact (which would be of dubious use even after restoration) than in the happiness, or even in the lives, of herself and those around her. Intelligent, but foolish, you could say. And apart from that, she was also quite entertaining, for the most part, if a little over-the-top sometimes. My one big beef with her is the same as many other companions: she wasn't really very important to the story. Outside of her own personal missions, she really doesn't have much of a role.

Her character concept was promising. But her 'innocent naivety' shtick was overplayed for laughs and kinda killed it for me.

I like her, although she often has nothing interesting to say where other companions do.

Rivaling her was amusing enough the first time around, that's about it though. She wears thin pretty fast.

I tolerate her, disliking her passively. Whenever I put any real thought into her character then it turns to hate. Lots of things about the her writing in the story bother me, like Hawke accepting her despite everyone in her clan being all too happy about getting rid of her and not bothering to find out why 'til years later, or the way she butchers the Dalish origin (which is my canon Warden's, FML) with retcons, or (...)
I got her friendship ironically because I am very much interested in the Eluvian myself, and since I don't give a hot you-know-what about her, I have no problem putting her at risk to uncover more about it. Only times I ever like her is when she gets mad at people (like Marethari or rival!Hawke) since it's the only time she ever acts mature and grown-up.
To add insult to injury, I would have liked her a lot if she was anything like her Origins persona.

She's my fav character in all of DA. I know I am in a minority but it's true.
Minority perhaps, but definatly not alone ![]()
First time I met her in DA2, I pretty much swooned. And the first time I saw that you could flirt with her, I did a little happy dance.
She has an endearing personality, a beutifull apperance (those puppy eyes
), and a lovely voice. She also showed that not all blood mages are all crazy people that betray or try to murder you ![]()

She's a bit like an annoying younger sister, so I don't mind her too much.

Merrill is a tough one for me. I don't hate her, but I can't completely like her either. She's undeniably cute, and I adore some of her banters (pirates with Isabela, Ser Pounce-a-Lot with Anders, and, of course, puppy eyes with Fenris); however, the "willingly associates/deals with demons" thing is hard to get past. To be honest, I suspect part of the reason Bioware dropped her DAO personality and "adorable-ized" her in DA2 was to offset the whole demon thing, as if they believed it would be harder to dislike her if she was super cute.
I find it difficult to completely trust her. The way she so easily and willingly betrays Hawke in the Fade seems like an all too likely possibility if a demon made her an offer outside of the Fade. I know all of the companions can turn on Hawke in the Fade, but I could just see Merrill doing it any time a demon offered her a sweet deal. Imagine if a demon appeared an offered to completely repair the Eluvian for Merrill if she agreed to knife Hawke in the back. I think Hawke would be in serious trouble. Just my opinion.

She explicitly says that she doesn't make deals with demons like that, and it was the power of the demon in the Fade (and the realm it was in) that forced her to comply with its desires.

She may say that she wouldn't, but if offered the chance to completely repair the Eluvian in exchange for doing some horrible deed, I could see her taking the deal. People may say they would never do something until actually faced with it. I just don't know if Merrill would be strong enough to refuse.

I do know. She doesn't actually trust spirits.

A New Path gives you the answer, she would allow the Demon to possess her and then have Hawke kill her. Repairing the Eluvian, a piece of her people's past, is (as she sees it) her duty and, to her, worth more than her life. But just her life, she doesn't want anyone hurt or killed for her or because of her.

Well, you are entitled to your opinion just like I am entitled to mine. Maybe she wouldn't take a deal with the demon if it required sacrificing someone else. Maybe she would. But someone who willingly deals with demons doesn't exactly inspire much trust or confidence to me.

I liked her, but I tend to root for underdogs and outcasts in games, so this wasn't much of a stretch. I feel bad for her and want to see her find herself. I appreciate characters having some flaws. Players are either going to find her awkwardness endearing or annoying, and I fall into the endearing camp.
As others have mentioned, its nice to have a blood mage character who isn't completely sinister. I'm not a huge fan of binary good and evil, and blood mages typically lean that direction in the series. Merrill ads some balance to the equation.
Her rival romance was more interesting and realistic than most romances in the series, since it featured legitimate arguments that arise from caring about another's well-being, instead of just agreeing or disagreeing on every issue. So...yeah, she's a solid character, and one of my favorites in the game.

Nope, never liked her. That's really all I can say on the matter because I can't even really pinpoint exactly what or why I hate her. I just do
I know why i hate her... she was zapped from the one we met in origins

This is a fair criticism. It had been a while since I played the Dalish origin; going through again I see these are two completely different characters from game 1 to game 2. Aside from lacking the social awkwardness, Merrill in game one was the opposite of rash and impulsive, to the point where she even chastises Fenarel for not heeding the Keeper's direction (these personalities traits are basically swapped in game 2). I guess it did not (and does not) bother me, since my personal canon stems from the mage origin, but I could see how the disconnect would drive people crazy.

Once I did the rivalmance I could never go back to the friendship path. Going the rival route definitely has a better out come with her giving up blood magic, and with the way her quest works you don't actually have to be mean to her to pull it off.
