I liked Merill. She reminded me of Tali from ME, except a little bit more...naive (stupid). How could I resist those puppy eyes? After banging Isabella like every sane man does I completed the romance with her. Don't really have issues with her blood magic seeing as my warden and hawke were both blood mages, and both took deals with demons at every opportunity (sorry Connor/Feyrniel, but I wanted that extra spell point
).
Anyone For Some Merril?

Did you kill Anders? I've read that the game is designed so that you have a mage available for the final battle. I think it makes a strange gameplay-over-story decision in that situation, since in the situation you're talking about Merrill will stay with you if and only if you kill Anders (and if I recall correctly, she's the only party member against killing Anders). It seems even stranger to me because I generally think of Anders' main thing gameplay-wise as healing, which Merrill can't do at all.
Yep.
Merrill defects before then anyway.
But you're right it doesn't make much sense to force you to always have a mage. Especially since Merill as you say has no access to the Creation tree.

I'm kinda disappointed in what I read so far. So much Merril dislikers.
I adore her, love her naivety, innocence, those puppy eyes, her personality, her fragility. She's the best character in Dragon Age. Her romance is so sweet. She really reminds me of Tali who was the best romanceable character for ME franchise.
Never really liked Isabela, she's a wh*re, a funny one, but still a wh*re. She repulses me. And since I'm straight, Merril was the best option.
I really would like to see her make an appearance in DA:I but it seems Hawke doesn't even mention her one bit, even when you romanced her. That utterly sucks and I want Bioware to do something about it. Or bring her back as an companion in some dlc.
Truly, Cassandra was boring and 'uglified' compared to the second game. Josephine lacks personality, she's dull. If you play a guy and are straight then you have very poor romance options.
3/4 of the Inquisition characters were annoying or seemed badly written. I only liked Iron Bull, Blackwall, Varric (who lost his wittiness from the second game) and Dorian. And I hated full heartedly Vivienne - just ugh! Don't create such monsters! Solas and Cole were also shi**y.
And one more thing - Anders was also VERY inconsistent with his character, Awakening and DAII - two different personalities. Merril at least was for 5 minutes in the Dalish Origin so it doesn't stand out so much that she acts differently in DAII. Anders on the other hand acts as if his kitten was eaten before his eyes and was raped by a whole garrison of templars.
Either way, I know this is wishful thinking and they'll probably never let us see Merril again. All those choices always were insignificant for the next game, and Dragon Keep doesn't change that one bit.
Hopefully in DAIV there will be more interesting women and characters.

Merrill Was my most favorite character in DA 2, she's not dumb shes naive to most things outside of the Dalish and she's funny as.
I burst out laughing when she said she knew the bay was deep because she fell into it ![]()

Minority perhaps, but definatly not alone
First time I met her in DA2, I pretty much swooned. And the first time I saw that you could flirt with her, I did a little happy dance.
She has an endearing personality, a beutifull apperance (those puppy eyes
), and a lovely voice. She also showed that not all blood mages are all crazy people that betray or try to murder you
Pretty much this. In all bioware rpgs I find myself attracted to the dorky, shy characters. Alistair, tali, garrus etc. Merrill was that turned up to 11. Just wonderful. Add to that the fantastic voice acting and you've got my favourite character in ever,
I do hope we see more of her in the future, if not in some return to kirkwall dlc then at weisshaupt...for obvious reasons.

She might have been the only one I fully rivaled.
Screw her mirror.
Don't despise the character existing though. Wouldn't even mind seeing her in a DLC. I just don't like her as a 'person'.

I did this in my first playthrough. Blood-magic-hating mage!Hawke wasn't going to let her do anything that potentially catastrophic.
I do enjoy her character, though. Her naïveté is simply too hilarious.
Merrill: I heard Varric saying you were a Grey Warden.
Anders: I was.
Merrill: I met a warden once. Back in Ferelden. Duncan, I think his name was. Very odd man.
Merrill: He had a marvelous beard, though. I'd never seen one before. I thought a squirrel had grabbed him by the chin.

Hello, I'm Merril. I like frolicing in the woods, using tainted magic, hobknobing with demons, and restoring ancient evil artifacts that eat my freinds. Hug me.

Yeah, Isabella was fun for a moment but for romance. Merrill all the way, that sweet look man.

The magic she uses isn't tainted, nor is the Eluvian evil (something Inquisition made a point of confirming what people have been saying for years now), -- to say nothing of how her interactions with Demons are limited to once as an irrelevant person in the background while the Keeper interacted with it, another time to learn the basics of blood magic from said Demon, whatever journeys Hawke brings her on, and the final interaction seven years later after years of working by herself
Plus her philosophy isn't wrong.
So... try again.

Merrill is probably my favourite character out of all three games.
I don't think Merrill is particularly naive, she knows the risks of blood magic and making deals with demons but she has decided its worth the risk and takes precautions to minimise those risks. The Warden and Hawke can both be far more reckless with regards to blood magic and demons than Merrill is. I would be more inclined to describe Merrill as arrogant, this is why the pride demon in the fade is able to manipulate her. I like the contradiction though, Merrill is arrogant with regards to her knowledge of magic but she's completely self deprecating with regards to social interactions.
I don't think Merrill is stupid either. In fact I am pretty much of the complete opposite opinion. I think that Merrill is intelligent but lacks common sense. I can imagine Merrill wandering around Lowtown oblivious to her surroundings because she has her mind some idea on how to fix the eluvian or such like. I also think that maybe some people don't get Merrill's sense of humour. Her banter about frolicking or getting told off by the Keeper for pulling hair, to me that's clearly Merrill joking but I'm sure other people just take it as Merrill being stupid and childish. Merrill can also be quite snarky with Sebastian, talking about his shiny armour, I don't think he even gets that she's taking the ******. I love Merrill's sense of humour.
Anders and Fenris are both horrible to Merrill but she's still only ever kind to them. She might argue back with them but she's never cruel like they are. She's the only person says anything in support of keeping Anders alive despite how horrible he is to her through the entire game, if the situation had been reversed I can't imagine that Anders would do the same for her.

Maybe this is why I find myself liking Merrill. She reminds me of myself (though I'd like to think I have a little more common sense, I can be a real ditz sometimes). She's really a sweet girl when she's not talking about magic, as is shown in her first Act 2 quest in a playthrough where Bethany ends up in the Circle. It's really too bad that Anders and Fenris can't see her as anything but a blood mage who made a deal with a demon. Even my blood-magic-hating, no-deals-with-demons mage!Hawke felt bad about turning down her request for the arulin'holm.

I felt myself a complete douchebag over it. It looked as if I had manipulated her and denied her a possibility for self-realization so that she had nowhere to go but to Hawke's bed. Fortunately, I have been able to replay that part, give her the knife, and still pursue her rivalry/romance path.

She was cute but too cute for my taste, I love the women but I went with Fen only cause no decent females had my eyes until Inquisition and Sera came along.... damn... I forgot all about the dudes when I saw her

I really like the character and think her inner conflict is very interesting.
I do think, though, that some of her lines are quite over the top naive. I mean sure, she's a bit of a nerd and hasn't hat much contact to people outside the clan, but still, she sometimes actually feels a bit too girly. You know, with all the demons and blood shed going on.
Still, that also triggers a specially intense big-sister protection pattern in my Lady Hawke
(which is a bit weird for romancing... but there room for innocence in romance, no?!).
BUT, apart from all that, her banter is just hilariously funny. When she is asked about how dangerous the mirror is and she insists that it only is dangerous because it might fall in somebody. It's just, the way she says it i want to reach through the screen and cuddle her.
