Frankly I respect Aveline even though she's a bit self-righteous and too dutiful, but I'll trust her to watch my back than Isabela.
The only companions I'd trust above Aveline is Bethany and I suppose Carver.

I'd trust Aveline above pretty much all of the companions except for Hawke's sibling, Bethany in particular.
I'd trust her except in issues to do with mages. I'll take Merrill and Anders there.
And Hawke was the one who had been investigating the crime, knew about the white lilies calling-card, and failed to mention this to his widowed mother who was starting to look for suitors?
Aveline failed, but so did Hawke. As did the Templars, the City Guard, and dear old Gascard failed.
Right? I distinctly remember thinking -- on my first DA2 playthrough -- something down the lines of "tell the family: white lilies = bad news" after the Act 1 quest was over. When Act 2 rolled around and we hear that Leandra went out with her suitor who sent white lillies I distinctly remember thinking "Hawke, you didn't warn them?? Damn youuuuuuuuuuu!!!!!!!!"
Aveline shattered my heart...

Yep. Cool and level headed, can't ask for a better advisor. Varric's pretty trustable, but only because he's proven himself.

Aveline's strict (albeit a bit selective) brand of lawfulness might be an issue for the hardcore pro-mage, but in general, I'd still trust Aveline the most if it came down to my own personal well being and the well being of companions/family/etc.. I like Merrill, but Merrill puts herself in a very precarious position. She's not exactly the one to look to for stability.
Anders? Never in a million cycles. He's a liar and unstable, struggling with his possession and the effect Justice/Vengeance has on him. Whether or not one feels his cause is just doesn't change that.
Although I like having her as a companion and many aspects or her personality there are a few things about her that bugs the hell out of me. IRL she would be on the holiday "card list" but not the "gift list".

Aveline's stable for the most part, but sometimes it feels like shaky ground. Merrill I trust completely and in every respect. Anders... I have a healthy caution, but I believe I can handle him reasonably well.
Actually, she is also the companion I have most issue taking for my party after Act 1 as I assume, as guard captain, she has more important work to do (apart from the odd mission in which I think she'd have a professional interest).
The same kinda goes for Anders, seeing as he's basically a one-man A&E dept for the poor.
None of the others seem like they're dropping anything remotely important to come running around Kirkwall with me when I snap my fingers.
I love Aveline. She's smart, strong, grounded, uniquely pretty, and at no point is she ever insane. I don't ever feel like I need to worry about her snapping and knifing Hawke in the back. I see her kind of like a surrogate sister who helps fill the void of the dead sibling in the prologue and the living sibling who joins the Wardens or goes to the Circle/Templars after Act 1. I wish she would have been a romance option as well because she definitely would have been one of my go-to romances.
I definitely see her as the older, more responsible, sister who's married and has a stable job compared to Hawke and all of his crazy antics.
I always wondered what happens to her when you side with the Mages. Does she eventually return to Kirkwall? Does Donnic run away with her?

I doubt very much that Donnic would leave her side under most or all circumstances.
Loved Aveline , was so happy she and Bela become friends . Aveline +Bela+Varric is my chosen party..so much fun with them ![]()
As it turns out, Aveline and Varric are the only two characters that I do like.
Aveline is a person with good intentions, but she's much less good than she thinks she is. She's stubborn, inflexible, and prefers order over justice, but it's really hard to find ways to call those out.
How quickly she jumps to Meredith's side in the Last Straw is disturbing to me.
But other than that, she seems reasonable enough. I don't really agree with bringing runaway mages to the Kirkwall Circle, but I can see that side at least.
Fortunately I always have maximum friendship with her, even while taking her with me to free mages and such, so she comes along with me to defend the mages easily.
I like Aveline for most playthroughs. We get along well mostly when I am on goody-two-shoes or sarcastic Hawke.
But the one where I went full crazy bloodmage had Aveline literally beat my character up. That surprised me. She's got spunk... I hate spunk! I wish I could kill her there and then.
Aveline is easily my favourite companion in the game, and one of my favourite characters of the franchise so far. I'll be very interested to see if she turns up in Inquisition, and in what capacity.
You have to give credit to ZenMagic, twenty (20) posts by him, and there are pages and pages for discussion that have already been done in other threads.

The only thing I don't like about her is her somewhat "scolding" attitude towards Merrill's use of unconventional magic. Given her past as the wife of a templar, it's understandable up to a point, but Merrill seems more like a naive kid who tends to get in over her head as opposed to someone using blood magic simply for personal power. (Aveline's attitude is also ineffective - there was at least one exchange where Merrill either missed her disapproving tone entirely or just didn't care.)
Otherwise, she's probably the most reliably ethical and unselfish companion - she's not out for money or personal glory, she runs the guard with the good of the city in mind, and she's capable of recognizing when Meredith is going too far despite her background with the templars.

She is still infinitely more loyal then characters like Fenris, Anders or Isabela. Depending on your dialogue with her right before the final battle, she will say that the fight (to save the mages) is worth being fought.
Aveline is actually the most resonable companion in the game. She knows there are terrible people between both the mages and the templars, and she feels bad that innocent civilians get caught in the crossfire.

I don't know if I agree with the part about being ethical, given that she still turns escaped mages into the templars. She goes along with Hawke more out of loyalty than conviction. She also shows signs of racism and will gloss over rape committed by her own guards, but will seek revenge for any retaliation for it.

Not unethical.
On the flip side, she sat on her hands over Anders and just about everyone regretted it.

Not really.

Sounded like she was legitimately unaware about that. Had she known, there was nothing she could do about it anyway, since the courts look the other way over crimes against elves. Still she offers Fenris a job in training her men (which he is just too stubborn to realize the value of) and employs Lia in the guard. That is more than most other human characters in the DA world can say they've done for elves.

I would argue that it is unethical, or at least immoral. As for Anders... well, history hasn't spoken on how many actually regret that yet. My Hawke doesn't, and Merrill doesn't seem to either.

She advocates a vigilante murder of a magistrate's son and not reporting it. Also, she indicates that she had heard about it if you ask her during that conversation. This seems to smack of hypocrisy either way, in addition to negligence.

But less than anyone else in the party (assuming that they were in positions of power, which no one but Sebastian is, and he makes Fenris the same offer).
