Specializations and You: Any Change of Plan?

The mage specializations don't appeal to me. There's nothing that specializes in elemental offensive spells (lightning, fire, ice, earth, whatever). There isn't even a spirit healer. The necromancer is probably the most appealing to me, but I'm wary of it because D&D and the like have given necromancy an evil connotation.

The champion was my go-to specialization for my non-dwarven warriors in DA:O, but my dwarves were berserkers.

How many specializations can you have in this game?

I might make my dwarf a templar due to the racial bonuses against magic.

The specialization that specialises in Fire, Lightning, and Ice is called the Mage Class. And you can have one to no specializations.

Archer is going to be my first play through, I am dead certain about that..... maybe.... possibly. However none of the Rogue specializations are striking me as exiting or compatible with archery (not a fan of traps). Could be wrong. Probably best to wait and see them in action before deciding.

Wait and see is a good idea. I am curious about the range of a tempest's chemical attacks. I'm less interested in traps, but it may surprise me.

That said to pick foes off from a distance still sounds great to me.

until i get a skill list for tempest or artificer, my rogue is probably gonna go with assassin....  We pretty much know the skills as it has been a spec in the past 2 games...  rather go known than unknown.

 

as for my mage playthrough, pretty sure im going to ignore necromancer.... never really cared for walking bomb spell anyway.  Knight enchanter is probably what i will go with, and the last one sounds like a force mage and that was ok in da2.

 

Warrior, well.... Id probably go with reaver, though i miss my beserker.  Templar would be #2 i think as it says it gets an edge over demons and mages, so they did improve it to where it can help fight demons and not just mages.... and lastly would be champion.... unless they totally revamped it, i could care less... not gonna sword and board my warrior anyway, thats what cassandra is for

Well my first character was always going to be a dalish elf, rift mage.
She will romance Solas and be sort of pro-elven. Unless they're like Huon from dragon age 2. Then they will be crushed.

I always tend to play mage characters. As such, i never had much of an interest in rolling a dwarf for long, as they couldn't be mages. I really like dwarves. I also always wanted a rogue spec that used magics in their fighting style. I predicted correctly about tempest, and now find myself planning a Dwarven Tempest. Whilst not a mage, im still able to burn, freeze and electrocute my enemies. Its a win win for me.
Downside? I cant romance the scout.
Upside? That gives me either Dorian or Josie as suitable options for my dwarf.

My final characters are human necromancer and qunari knight enchanter. Summoning a sword from the fade seems to fit the a qunari mage so well, and makes use of their melee defense bonus.
I've always like spirit and primal magics. As the human is a circle mage, the bonus talent reflects this well.

However, im going to save one of the latter magi as a play through for later, when all the dlc and expansions are out.

The mage specializations don't appeal to me. There's nothing that specializes in elemental offensive spells (lightning, fire, ice, earth, whatever).

They require no specializations to choose these. You can specialize in each, by maxing one element out or mix and match.

I love rogues and seeing the other specializations now, I'll probably just end up going assassin. I thought Tempest, however it currently sounds too similar to the other one and just exchanges traps for bombs. 

Re the bold bit, I seem to see this assumption banded around a lot on these boards and I'm wondering if I've missed something. 

 

The official description says:

 

"These unpredictable experts specialize in using alchemical mixtures that wreathe them in frost or flame. Fast, chaotic, and possibly mad, they wade into the fight and dare enemies to face the storm."

 

When I first saw this my immediate reaction was "Wow, a dual wield Dwarf stabbing folks with ice/fire blades and possible PBAoE effects would be great!" Bombs never came into my mind. 

 

There's no mention of bombs in the text, In fact, it says "....mixtures that wreathe them in frost or flame". Which to me invokes images of effects centred on the character rather than a lobbed munition. "Alchemical mixturescould be potions, blade coatings, elemental arrows Bombs sit more in the Artificer domain in my opinion. 

 

Its certainly widely believed that each companion follows one of the 9 specialisations with Sera being the Tempest. I've watched a lot of gameplay with her and I've never seen her throw a grenade, all her attacks seem to be with the bow. I HAVE seen her loose arrows that clearly have fire and ice effects on contact with target.

 

So given all that I'm wondering if I've missed a nugget of news which leans more toward the bombs approach?

I decided on Rift mage with my female Dalish. On my second playthrough I might do a darker playthrough with a Necromancer mage.

I was set on Rift but a dalish mage could have easily learned how to wield a sword and she is the protective type so now I'm not sure. I'll decide once I see the spec details. 

 

Anyone know what level they/their quests become available at?

I tend to use mages and this time the concept of the rift mage intrigues me. Quanari Male Rift Mage... eat your Qun out!  B)

All but my two rogue inquisitors are going to stick to the specs I assigned them. I haven't yet finalized whether my elf or dwarf inquisitor will go with tempest/artificer.

Wasn't intending to make a Dwarven Rogue. Considering the Dwarven Inquisitor's House association to the Carta. Considering the Artificer's draw to traps it sounds like a solid 3rd playthrough option should I move away from Assassin, Tempest.  Nightmare mode / Strategy ... Boom.

Rogues have always been my favorite class, and it says Assassins "specialize in quick, deadly kills that let them slide back into the shadows undetected". Matches my play style perfectly! <3 If we can dual specialize like in the previous games, I'd probably take Tempest as my secondary specialization.

 

I'm also thinking about rolling either a m!human/f!qunari mage for a later playthrough, and Rift Mage sounds pretty badass. Knight Enchanter sounds good as a second specialization (I have yet to play a mage in a DA game, but those specializations seem pretty awesome).
