Question as stated above. I can't find seem to find anything that makes it clear. Any help would be appreciated.

It's a very good question. The name appears in several sources about Antiva and Rivain.

For example, Queen Asha Campana of Antiva was born in Rivain, the child of wealthy merchants. Before marrying the king of Antiva, she was "Gana of Ayesleigh" (whatever that title means).

About the Fourth Blight, it's true that WoT says that "Antiva is freed from the darkspawn during the infamous battle at Ayesleigh".

Later, according to First Enchanter Rivella's letter in WoT, the Circle in Dairsmuid (the capital of Rivain) is annuled after Seekers are sent "across the bay from Ayesleigh" to investigate.

The map isn't clear either. Ayesleigh seems to be exactly in the limit between Rivain and Antiva. My guess? Ayesleigh may be an important frontier city that has changed sides more than once in the past.

One thing World of Thedas makes clear is that the borders between countries were more fluid than in our world today - which was the way they were in the real-life Middle Ages.  Two kings may claim something as part of their kingdom, and demand taxes from them.  An area might claim to be free when two or three countries consider it theirs.  I think it's mentioned in several places that Orlais still considers the Free Marches as belonging to them :P

(In the real world, in European history, we didn't get firm, fixed boundries until the Peace of Westphalia in 1648, well after the Middle Ages.  Which seems strange.  It's one of those things that doesn't seem like it needed to be invented, yet it was invented less than 400 years ago.)

Ayesleigh is in Antiva, on the coast, so probably across the bay from Rivain and possibly under the latter's control on some occasion during its history.    However, at the time of the 4th Blight it is definitely part of Antiva.

Well said. I remember that some people were surprised by Duke Prosper having a castle in the Free Marches, despite him being an Orlesian noble.

Which is even more confusing when you consider how many orlesian nobles and free marcher nobles of orlesian descent there are in the area.

Very true.  It wasn't until the Last Flight that I realized Chateau Haine was in the Vimmarks.  I assumed it was in Orlais proper.

Heh.  Makes me wonder if those horrible De Launcets are considered by Orlais to be the rulers of Kirkwall by the court at Val Royeaux :P

Well according to the wiki page on Rivain: http://dragonage.wikia.com/wiki/Rivain Ayesleigh is in Rivain. Whether you want to trust that though....

Though I always assumed it was in Rivain tbh, and as to the line about Antiva being freed from the Darkspawn after the battle of Ayesleigh, I guess its perhaps because the bulk of the horde was situated in Antiva which they had completely laid waste to, whereas it hadn't fully pushed into Rivain and Dairsmuid
Also according to the Prima Official Game Guide: DAO Collector's Edition, Ayesleigh is in Rivain
