In his *slight* defense real plate wasn't as large as fantasy plate.

Well yes. All those spikes of doomy spiky things would make it harder, decreased range of motion, etc.. Imagine a knight falling off his horse and instead of properly rolling through the fall, he gets stuck on his spikes in the ground. Awwwwwwwwkward.

Really? Do you think that compares in any way with the DA:I videos we have seen? You are supposed to be fighting dragons with this armor on, with tumbles and jumps to dodge those big claws...

Well then, another fun fact:

it was a thing for armorers to have their employers dance with a full set of armor. If they couldn't, the fitting needed work. Meaning: if you couldn't ballroom blitz in full plate, the full plate was sh*t.

And yes, you could totally jump and roll around in full plate. Remember who was mostly using that full plate armor, them knights, and how those are cavalry. With fighting on a horse comes the hazard of falling off a horse and everyone with proper training will tell you what to do to migitate the effects of a fall, you roll with it. That isn't a modern invention, knights did it too.

Practical plate armor (meaning the ones actually worn for combat and not just for ceremonial pimp purpose(which are the ones found in exhibitions because they look pimp, duh)) actually has a wider range of motion than the human body. It weighted around 20-30kg (those are the heavy ones), with the weight beeing well distributed through a custom tailored system of straps and intersected plates. It literally was a steel tuxedo for that grand social gathering called war.

Sorry for the double post.

Not to mention all those casualties whenever comrades hug each other after a successful battle.

Battle report:

No casualties. Over 9000 enemies slain. "Doom Hedgehog" armor design proved outstandingly demoralizing to the enemies. May have to change strategic planning to accomodate battling in areas unsuited for farming due to enemy propensity to void their bowels at sight of new standard formation.

Post-battle report:

413 casulaties. New order out to immediately cease post-battle celebrations. "Doom Hedgehog" armor design may require a caution when manhandling warning.

Most of us are not SJWs - we just want realistic battle armour.  Because we have at least an inkling of what armour is supposed to do for a warrior on the battlefield.  Sorry if that gets in the way of some people getting their jollies ogling warriors in chain mail bikinis/mankinis, but frankly, if your toons turn up to the fight in that kind of costume, they're not going to live long enough to argue about it anyway.

An arsehole who claims to be fighting for "social justice". Oddly enough, there's only one person in this thread who might fall under that category, and they're definitiely not annoyed by chainmail bikinis....

To be perfectly honest, the couple pictures of male bikini armor I've seen in this thread is absolutely something I'd equip on my Malequisitors if only for the shits and giggles. Qunari warrior with little more but loinclothes? I'm straight, but I'd totally dig that!

I much rather prefer some sensible armor designs (especially since you can easily pimp out entirely practical armor without sacrificing anything really, nevermind there being its own unique allure to the aesthetics of pragmatism), but if we were to get silly chainmail bikinis, I'd take it. In fact I'd only dress up my male characters with it because I prefer a more robe-styled, classy look for females, so really the only silly armor variant I am genuinely interested in is are those manly loinclothes!

Best thing in life!

Good work guys, 100 pages, it's been emotional.

---

I feel the need to note that while in many contexts not wearing armour makes perfect sense, if you're running and jumping and fighting then you want to be wearing some rugged adventuring gear. So the whole dragons are armour penetrating so you don't need plate may be fine, but you'll still want a nice pair of pants to stop you cutting up your pretty legs while diving for cover.

Of course that gear can still be quite attractive if it is designed by people who actually have taste and imagination.

Nearly naked might make sense in some contexts, but you're saying something about the tech level or the crazy level of the people dressing like that.

I hope we will get as much choice as possible in Inquisition. But it has to fit with the world and the setting. The flashy combat is a atmopshere killer for me, so I don't need another one with too skimpy armor. But if it's optional (meaning npcs are not weearing it) I have zero problem with revealing armor.

I absolutely love "sexy" armor and playing with my female inuqisitor i will let her wear what looks most appealing to me

But armor doesn't have to be revealing to be "sexy". I usually hate to post this pic, because it has been probably done dozens of times in different threads about female armor, but I really think this ist a very good example. It's one of the most appealing (and sexy) armor i have ever seen on a female character and it perfectly fits with her role as a sorceress and with the world and setting. So you don't have to show as much skin as possible to make a outfit sexy.

I really hope we will get more stuff like this in Inquisition. I would love to have outfits like this for mages (in addition to robes) and leather armor, which really looks like leader armor and not like heavy armor they way it did in Origns.

I'd happily wear that armour.  I admit that when I say 'sexy armour' I really only think of the chainmail/plate bikini stuff.  In most of the games I play I wear leather armours if I can.  Like the ones in your pic, they are practical, and yes, sexy, just not ridiculously useless as armour, and overly sexualised.

@nici:

I like that outfit and wouldn't mind seeing it in a game. However, as armor it's almost as badly designed as the skimpy variant. It still has the limbs and one shoulder protected while leaving the torso almost entirely unprotected. She gets away with it because she doesn't, as a rule, need armor, so that this outfit works as an affectation without being too blatant about it.

Its more "traveling clothes" than armor (Though I don't think you'd want to be wearing something that skin tight if it starts raining)

Its the sort of outfit I'd really like though for non-combat.  DA would be improved with a wide variety of "camp" outfits.

Once again, the issue is what are you looking at in 'armor'.

Mages look for minimal (or none) protection against sharp objects, necessary protection against elements (no, one should not be constantly using magic to warm themselves up unless absolutely necessary) and good mobility.  In which case armor posted by nici is perfect.  I don't think mages should be stuck wearing chain - if nothing else it's heavy.  Nor do I think they should be wearing long flowing robes either as moving around in those in combat seems...problematic (heels go into the flowing robe category, horribly impractical)

Rogues will want slightly more protection against sharp objects, but have emphasis on not making noise for moving around undetected.

Note on rogues:  The class itself is fairly poorly defined.  Normally an assassin would either use bow (just like in modern days sniper rifle would be preferred method of assassination), or murder people when they are defenseless (poison, knife in the back, whatever).  Thief would sneak in to steal things or pick pockets.  Neither of these characters would be wearing any meaningful armor as they were never meant to engage in combat with armed and armored foes.  The 'dual wielding front line rogue' should really be reclassified as a 'martial arts warrior'.  But whatever, real assassinations don't really fit the fast paced combat very well.

Front line warriors will want as much protection from sharp objects as possible, with just enough mobility to get to their enemy and be able to swing at them.  So yes, full covering mail at the least, plate armor with best armor joint cover possible and full plate helmets to deter enemy archers.

Anyway, I am sure I have not said anything that hasn't been said plenty of times before.

I'm not one for the really skimpy armor, but I do enjoy armor that is "flowing" and "robe-like" in apearance. Kind of like the armor worn by the elves in the Hobbit movies. I also like the armor the crusader wears in Diablo 3:RoS.
