The choice between "sexy" and awesome armor

I like big, clunky gear for my warriors.

"Sexy" gear for my mages and rogues. And this is by no means that skimpy stuff in the Skyrim mods. No disrespect to people with the talent to actually mod.. But, I was so disappointed I couldn't find "sexy" mage robes. "Sexy" to me is not running around in bikinis. "Sexy", to me, is suggestive, not medieval stripper. Maybe show a bit of leg with a slit in a long robe. A little cleavage. Or even just something that's form-fitting. I can't play a game like Skyrim or Dragon Age where my characters are running around naked. I can set aside realism for a lot of things when it comes to my PC looking good, but that's something I just...can't. It looks so silly.

My Dragonborn wore the ugly archmage robes during fights, but in cities she wore the "Imperial Investigator" armor (mod). I found that outfit sexy, and it doesn't even show cleavage or leg. It is form-fitting, though. :P

I agree with there being choices. What the female Qunquisitor was wearing in the Redcliffe demo looked so blegh to me. :L I just hope there's enough "sexy" and "practical" so everyone can be happy. But honestly, as a mostly mage player, I think we get the shaft the most. In EVERY rpg. xD

Agreed, I wanted something like the concept art for the female mage warden in DA:O.

How do you explain why there are different styles of clothing, hairstyles, make-up styles, etc?  I used to think that my bleached blond mohawk and facial piercings looked good back when I was in my early twenties.  I don't think so anymore and, therefore, have changed my look.  How can you explain that?

You were born without much sense of fashion or style, this limitation has thankfully relieved itself by repeated experiences and increasing control over your physical/sexual destiny.

I'd come up with something to this but I have all these puritan things to do. I'll need some fancy clothes, some tea, a horse and carriage, a mansion with plenty of land surrounding it, and some peasants to scoff at in an absurdly over the top fake British accent.

Actually somebody should get these things together with a camera and make this happen.

Oh don't worry, all this posting in favor of modesty and chastity has got you covered in that respect.

It's okay.

I recently started a new playthrough of Dragon Age: Origins and instantly stripped all temporary companions of their clothing so that I could sell it later.

Either the two balance each other out, or I'm a very strange kleptomaniac puritan who steals people's clothes.

But your statement doesn't support your argument. If a person's sense of fashion and style can change over time, then at any given time, what they think looks good is subjective.

Also, who is talking about chastity? Chastity and modesty are two different concepts.

Just make half the armors fan service skin showers and the other half pratcial and functional pieces grounded in the no-fun zone.

What's the problem exactly?

The problem is I hate both sides and what I prefer is practical but having feminine qualities and designs.  Pretty but practical.  Feminine not masculine in design.  Moving away from the male centric armor designs to something incorporating more feminine and girly qualities.

All what you said would accomplish is a bunch of skimp ware and a bunchy of bulky bland masculine armor, with nothing in between.  It would suck.

Dude, it's not about modesty and chastity.  It's about being made to wear this:

a.jpg

when the situation calls for this:

man-protective-hazmat-suit-isolated-whit

Give me slinky evening gowns for the parties and sexy neglige for getting my romance on...it's appropriate there.  But don't dress me up like a Victoria's Secret model and shove me into combat.  My character isn't an idiot and no matter how good she is with a sword or a spell, she's not going to leave her chest and midriff exposed to any lucky shot.  She's on the battlefield to stab out your eyes, not to titillate them, and doesn't give a f*** what a corpse thinks about her sideboob.

There is a middle ground.  Something can be aesthetically pleasing while still being able to perform its function.

See?  She's still distinctly feminine.  She still looks good.  But now her protective gear can actually do the job it's meant to do.  You don't get to see her navel, sure, but at least she actually looks like a damn respectable professional...not the stripper version of a professional.

And thank god, no breasts or skin showing, nice and submissive and tame, just the way the manly men of the Inquisition like their girls. Might as well just put a chain on her neck while we're at it.

Are you saying that showing off breasts and skin = not being submissive? And that not showing off breasts and skin =/= being submissive? Because that's what it sounds like.

Aren't you the same guy that said that the women of Inquisition are basically men because they have ambitions?

You fascinate me. Unless you're trolling, in which case meh, but you're the first person I've met who didn't see skintight clothing as itself intending to be sexy.

I expect practical armor for the most part but I don't mind a bit of sexiness added into some armor for rogues and mages since their job isn't about taking hits.

@Kefka112:  You know, if you're a woman - it's just not proper for such a lady to be playing games - you should be working on your grace and poise or something.  It's too manly for you to be playing games.

If you're a dude - who the hell cares WHAT you think about how females should be presented in Dragon Age?  Perhaps we should leave that to our actual female gamer player base to decide if what's presented in DA does, or does not, suit their vision of powerful women.

And now - I will leave you to the mad elf mage abomination Xilizhra to toy with.

I don't know if someone already post this, but awesome armor (armor that offer real protection) always better than sexy armor.

Timidity just gets under my skin, that's all there is to it. A full body suit strikes me as nothing less than something out of a 60s era TV show or something... Actually, scratch that, the 60s Bond movies were more titillating than that (Ursula in Dr. No), just smacks of that timidity. Oh god, we can't do this because people will think it's wrong. I wish for games to return to their exciting carefree days of yore.

Are you saying that showing off breasts and skin = not being submissive? And that not showing off breasts and skin =/= being submissive? Because that's what it sounds like.

I guess so. That girl is worried what people might think, they might judge her as being a ****** or whatever it is (as they do everywhere), she won't just let go. That seems like submissive behavior to me, when you freak about what people will say and judge you for it, allowing them to influence your behavior. Unless you live in some universe where that kind of sexual expression is judged positively.

This "alien logic" can be applied to similar things, like when people get tattoos to show how independent they are I'm like um that shows how dependent you are, you are constantly thinking about your own appearance and how people view you, your need to fit in or identify with certain cultural aspects or something.

"That girl" is worried about what a sword might do to her exposed flesh.

Only a completely stupid woman would expose her skin thinking "sexy feminism" would save her from violence.

A flimsy excuse, to my mind. Que all the other nonsensical aspects to the DA universe. This remote singling out of a single unrealistic element among dozens strikes me as Nazi-level arbitrariness.

Yes, Nazis are famed for being arbitrary.

You do realize that the second you have to use that word, you've lost the argument, right?

That's not why people get tattoos. At least, that's not why I got mine.

Cultural identification, personal beliefs, whatever... There's a lot more reasons than showing independence. Mine are to remind myself of things that are important to me. And they're not for sharing, in general. They're for me. And they're covered by most of my tops.

...Also I'm vaguely baffled by associating showing skin with confidence (or lack thereof). Much like tattoos, there's a lot of reasons.

In the case of plate armor, a damn good reason not to show skin is because you don't want to be injured.

It's kind of the same reason you wear a hard hat on a construction site, or full pads if you're playing hockey. At minimum, you want torso coverage. That being said, like tattoos and womens' fashion, there's all kinds of variation on the hows, the whys, and appearance.
