Pauldrons and boots/sabtons tend to get hit the most with the oversized ridiculousness wand. Look how large that male character's feet are compared to the female character. It's like comparing an elephant's hoof to human's foot.

Weapons are quite often ridiculously oversized as well. I'm looking at you Hawke's Key...

To be fair, DA has never been that sensible with weapons. Most of the unique/named ones beyond the early game tend somewhat more towards the "flashy/stylistic" than "a practical tool for killing people", though they're not nearly as bad as some games I've seen. But yeah, the Hawke's Keys are really awful. The staff could be excused if it wasn't so darn big. The bow...maybe borderline though still ridiculous. The melee weapons though are well into parody levels. Same with Hayder's Razor. I mean, seriously. What the Christ is that thing meant to be?

Also, not something exclusive to DA by any stretch of the imagination, but hammers/mauls. Why do games never have actual warhammers? I mean, really, they're awesome weapons designed to brutalise plate armour, and we get things that look more suited to banging tent pegs into the ground...

I just have to say, this is a very well done piece of artwork.

Jason Chan is pretty good for fantasy artwork in general. Admittedly, pretty much everything of his I've seen is from Magic cards (like that pic), but it's cool none-the-less. He can sometimes fall somewhat into the tropes this thread is highlighting when doing warrior women, but they art is really nicely done.

edit: heres another couple I like a lot:

I saw someone giving a slutty looking suit to Aveline on a Dragon Age II playthrough and almost wanted to punch my monitor.

Yeah, that kind of thing gets me too. I mean, OK, roleplay your PC as an exhibitionist if you really want. But Aveline sure as hell ain't one.

Take this however you guys want, but Kefka reminds me of a character from the later Sword of Truth series.

I only got up to book 4 in that series, but given that it was basically an author tract promoting Objectivism (i.e. Lolberterianism but even more stupid) in a fantasy setting and getting worse as the series went on, I don't think I want to know...

I have to say I dislike the bulky traditional medieval heavy armor, they look ugly. I know they are more realistic and practical but please... in a fictional video game let me have some thing nice and please no chain-mail bikinis.

Spoiler

I know it might be too much to hope for but I really like some of the Aion's concept design on male/female armor. [Link]

I've read all of them, and I don't think I'd ever recommend anyone go past book 2. Although I did quite like the first two.

I still don't really see the reality argument. It's like, there is a reason people create games, because they just want to see the most fantastical amazing things and have these ultimate hero moments.

I'm sure on some level some sense of reality is being factored in, but I just can't really grasp it. I thought this character from a recent game I played was pretty cool. It's obviously at least intended to be attractive, but I guess you can tell she's a mage of some kind at the same time. Maybe that fits into the mage exemption... people don't seem to have as big an issue if it's cloth as compared to when it's plate mail, because of how little sense that makes.

I thought Aribeth was all right also, even though not a mage.

Liking this for "lolbertarianism but even more stupid," not how it may or may not apply to anyone in this thread.

I got only got to book 2 of Sword of Truth, the next book was basically the author's elongated BDSM porn fantasy, I ended up losing interest there.

I am a huge proponent for an "appearance" tab like many MMOs have now, where you get your stats from armor items, but you can look like whatever you want.  That's why I use Sunnie's "Improves with Level up"mods that she made for most of the armor and weapons in my DA2 game.  I console add the armor to my inventory at level 1 and use it through the entire game, it levels up with me.  No "oh god this armor has the best stats but it looks like a mabari threw up on it"

I know it's too late for them to add an appearance tab if they didn't already, but I really hope they did.

Girlfight! :D

Here is a picture of two women in mail fighting:

This is reality. But as noted above, men's fantasy armour isn't especially realistic either. I'd be happy to settle for armour that shows form without leaving any important bits uncovered such as the tummy or neck. Leave the Dalish cheerleader armour to the modding community, please.

Here is my Jedi Guardian from SWtOR with Kira (I've since gotten rid of her belt, given her the same belt as him)Serdneyjo_and_Kira.jpg

This is what I am all for, I don't think men should be in full plate and women in chainmail bikinis, it's fantasy, it's not real, they both can wear "chainmail bikini" type armor.  In other words, I'll take Conan the Barbarian over Sir Lancelot any day.  Not saying Lancelot shouldn't be an option, but just that Conan should too.  Same for women.  Full plate for women AND chainmail bikinis.  Then, I can do what I do in SWtOR :D

Well, when both people are in plate and only have swords, as they demonstrated at the video's beginning, they basically cannot realistically hurt each other by swinging their weapons. So yes, it becomes a game of throwing your opponent to the ground so you can finish him, usually through the vision slits or by removing the helmet if possible (no helmet on a battlefield is basically a death sentence).

Obviously that wouldn't make for a very fun game, so it's certainly perfectly understandable that Dragon Age (or any RPG really) forgoes that. Along with the clanky noise :P.

The video also shows that, while plate slows you down, it's not as ridiculously bulky as many medias portray. Thanks a lot for the video Mousestalker!

Again realism, and practicality. This is not even two side. I don't care about realist clothing. Sexy or not it's irrelevant. Especially in world there magic exists.

Satele have no armour, Malgus have so what, he still was crushed.

Star Wars is a terrible example. Jedi do not wear armor due to the fact of how restricting it is and wearing armor would hinder their reflexes.

Dragon Age clearly takes a lot of inspiration from medieval dark fantasy such as Lord of the Rings and Dungeons and Dragons. In all of these franchises, wearing armor is an absolute must to survive, unless you are a mage or a rogue. For warriors, which this thread is really about, armor is required.

I say do whatever makes you happy. If I want my male rogue to wear a loincloth and look like Beastmaster , so be it. But I do think the armor rating should reflect what you wear male or female. If plate mail has 100 armor rating, your female bikini chainmail should be 10.

If the chainmail bikini instead gives bonuses to Dex so I can better DODGE attacks? Sure.

My reaction exactly. LOTR is probably the most idealist fantasy you can find, albeit Tolkien made some concessions to realism, and in Dungeon and Dragons armor is less used for protection than for the various enchantment that allow for your lvl 30 warriormonkthief to arm-wrestle gods into submission.

Well just so my stance is clear I don't hate Fantasy/sexy armor*quite the opposite infact* and am very much in favor for some to be included as OPTIONS for players who want them however I'm against those being the ONLY options for female PCs.
