The choice between "sexy" and awesome armor

To everyone who brought up sexy armor and functionality. In a world with magic, dragons and demons, armor not being practical is what seems unplausible to you? Not that Dragon Age has any of those(except for Isabella, maybe), but you know, in general, because I've heard this one a thousand times before.

Otherwise, yeah, I agree with the OP, kinda. Ultimately whether or not there is sexy armor in the game is very much dependant on the tone of the game. In Saint's Row having ridiculous clothing is okay... nay... required. But in a more "serious" game, not so much.

Personally, I don't have a problem with "sexy" armor in principle. It depends on if it fits the game. Whenever I look at armor in a video game, I don't ask myself questions like "Does it cover every inch of skin?" or "Does it look like it's made of sufficiently strong material" or "Would I realistically be able to move around in it?" All I ask myself is "Is it aesthetically pleasing to my personal tastes?"

Video games are not real life. They aren't even a live-action medium, so they don't have to worry about how such armor would look or move in real life. I firmly believe they should embrace that fact, not try to shunt it away as if it were something shameful. For all the ridicule TERA Online's bikini armor has gotten, it works for me because that game is clearly a high fantasy game with a heavy focus on aesthetics over realism. Guild Wars 2 also has tons of sexy outfits, and it works there for the same reason.

IMO, the only time criticism of armor as "unrealistic" or "impractical" has any merit is if the creators themselves specifically claim the armor is supposed to be realistic and practical. I don't know if Bioware has ever made that claim about DA, but the game seems to have too much of a gritty, grimdark tone for "sexy armor" to work. It would clash too much with the tone of the game. Sexy light armor, on the other hand (ie for cloth-wearing classes), would probably work much better, as DA:O had quite a bit of that.

Anyway, to answer the OP's question, I enjoy "awesome" armor in every game, and "sexy" armor if it fits the game.

Nobody asks themselves questions like that.  The reason people harp on the amount of skin shown is because it's often inflicted hamfistedly on female "armour" without much thought to whether it suits the character or the game.  A scantily-clad female warrior will always look silly next to a fully-covered male one, no matter how nice the outfit otherwise looks.

It's not just about personal taste, it's about suiting the aesthetic of the setting.  It's about putting the character in an outfit that they would realistically choose to dress themselves in.  I wouldn't expect to see Cassandra's armour on Bayonetta, and I wouldn't expect to see Bayonetta's outfit and high heels on Cassandra.

If we are talking chainmail bikinis here, I think the biggest problem is not that it makes it much more difficult to suspend disbelief (though that is an issue) but that it looks retarded.

Give me practical armor that works and doesn't have any built in design flaws for the sake of  ''sexy'', things that don't work are not sexy, they're just useless.

Functionality turns me on.

As for female armor and whether it suits the character, I was referring to armor worn by player characters, not NPCs.

The DA stuff is on the dull side IMO. Where's the crazy freaking...

elyos-draconic-cloth-female.jpg

Well there is nothing wrong with that armor, of course DA:I is not a JRPG or something along that line. So that kinda armor does not look good on game and breaks immerse in my opinion.

Also if a game does that I will expect the opposite too for other genders. Final Fantasy XIV, is all the sexy for all the genders and I am more than ok with it.

That depends on what you mean by "work". Most games with sexy armor, particularly MMOs, make armor's usefulness based solely on the stats it provides. As far as gameplay goes, it works just as well as more covering armor. If you're one of those players who values realism and deep immersion, obviously that could cause some problems but I'm not one of them.

I was too, I just find that when limited resources are allocated to making the female versions of armour "sexy," female PCs don't always have a lot of alternatives.  See Origins and the Dalish belly shirt that it takes forever to get rid of.

Lmao have you seen the bass ackwards comments in this thread already? "I want huge/massive armor but I don't want to to be massive like male is massive I want to still be able to know that I'm a female underneath." "That form fitting undergarment that, if textured skin color, would be an abomination of the patriarchy is somehow okay now that it is only skin tight leather instead of skin tight skin." "Even though I usually don't even USE the armors that are bulky on my female hero, I want developers to spend extra time on making them as well, so that I can feel like I'm choosing to be sexy instead of having sexy forced upon myself. I cannot stress enough that I will not use it, I just want some illusion of choice in the matter."

Everything has been ridiculous. If you want equality in armor, I do not mind or care. Put them in the same bulky armor that a male would be in. That's fine by me. But to use ridiculous arguments such as "I speak out against things I actually prefer so that I can feel who the hell knows what," is beyond ludicrous.

Rather have functional and/or 'cute' amour if that makes any sense. Never understood the stupid bikini armor in some games however I also get a little bummed that the cloth part of my armor has to be dull brown all the time. The crafting system gives me promise that for part of weapons and armor that has the capacity to be realistically colorful, will be.

Also I also want to make my Clownquisition so some unrealistic color will be fun :P

Which games have bikini armour? I've never come across it personally, I just keep hearing about them. lol. Are they JRPGs?

Give men functional armour while giving women bikini armour. Imo it's fair.

I don't know much about what females find attractive on males, but I feel like the "bulk and sharp" of ridiculously pointy and unwieldy armor is "sexy" on males in a sense. I know I wouldn't be against an armor that seamlessly  goes from "spikey shoulders that are in no way useful" down to showing a 8-pack ab region and then back around to spikey and unwieldy. I think that, however, making armor like that seems silly. It seems odd to try and attribute "female sexuality" to a male character. It is perfectly fine for females to be sexy in one way and males to be sexy in another way.

Yes, is why armors in DA:I is awesome, and for some it's beautiful, too. But it's not, well Tera armors, so to speak.

I hope there is absolutely no sexy armor in the game. The idea of "speaking out against" something and being disappointed when it no longer exists makes me shake my head.

I simply want the choice. Sexy and cool armor. Full covering or half-naked. All about the choice.

As much as I enjoy sexy armor I'd like DA to  be realistic so the setting will be interesting.

I don't see what's so ridiculous about wanting full coverage but also not wanting something that looks 3 sizes too big.  That's why I said I like the Inquisitor's armour earlier in the thread--it has small differences to suit a male or female body, but still provides the exact same amount of protection.

I don't want "sexy" armour.  I do want awesome armour.  I don't see why awesome has to mean strictly masculine and bulky.  I want armour that looks tailored to fit a female body.  Which is why I love this so much:

10629361_10152706726959367_4021352883533

Even though they are clearly wearing the same design, the female armour is not just a scaled down version of the male one.  The pants are more fitted, the top is longer and flattering.  If you took the armour away, the outfit underneath would actually be quite fashionable.  Yet they are both equally protected and covered.

See, like I don't really care about the look of armors. I think the female looks good there, but I also think that the armor for females there is just as impractical as bikini armors. There are armored boots, gloves, and shoulders, but then there is just form-fitting leather that is roughly better than skin. I just don't think the argument holds up to say that armor is practical while other armors are not.

I'm fine with having both functional-looking and sexy armor available. Dragon's Dogma would be a good example. Full plate and chainmail? You bet. Silk lingerie and metal bras with armor that leaves almost nothing to the imagination? They've got that too.

The only two pet peeves I really have are giant, DA:O sized pauldrons and tons of spikes or sharp bits (I may be slightly hypocritical here though, since I'm also a fan of WH40K).

Yes, and upcoming Black Desert Online is another game that does both. Because I dislike when you're left with no choice, like in Tera.

To be fair, male armors in DAO and DA2 had that problem as well. The heavy armor designs were often too bulky and oversized. A warrior (male or female) shouldn't look like a space marine from Warhammer. I had my DA:O warrior stick mostly with medium armor for that reason.

So far DA:I looks to be a major improvement.

I disagree. Stomach, upper legs, waist regions all look far less protected than the male inquisitor. I don't think wanting something that is proportionately sized for a female warrior is bad. I know in DA:O a lot of the armors looked like they went through the drier a few too many times. Very much took me out of the realm everytime I saw my female character. I just think that wanting "massive armor" that doesn't completely cover the form of the hero is incredibly contradictory.

Yeah I love that, when it follows the curves and lines of your body. And when the devs cares about making separate armors for female and male (and same ones for those who want it of course). And not like in Dark Souls 2 when they just copy pasted the male body to create the female one and cared nothing for female characters beyond that. Hate that.

I think this answer your question fairly well, if you do not know, why do you even try to justify it?

As for the rest I disagree completely, fair is fair. If people want sexy armor then make it for everyone the same ridiculous way and I have no problem. If not than no, sexy ridiculous armor only on females can burn in the seven hells.

Actually they are using different armors there, if you see the last gameplay with the FemInquisitor with the greatsword, she has the equivalent to the male version showed in that picture.
