The choice between "sexy" and awesome armor

Breast talk? I think designing female characters with different breast sides would be best. DA games kinda does this already. In some games there is slider for breast like Saint Row (though it's "sex appeal" and apparently small breast can't be sexy and big has to be sexy  ) for protagonist. It could be nice add but DA series has had only face CC so far so I doubt it'd happen.

Saints Row 3/4 CC was pretty awesome, I gotta say. For those that wanted "sexy" characters there was thongs and skirts or even full (censored) nudity. Also, though, it allowed folks like me to make a female bodybuilder (admittedly with somewhat larger breasts) in a steampunk-style dress shirt, baggy happy raver pants, and elvis hair. Heck, I even made a dude in a skirt with a zombie voice for one playthrough, just because I could. The best part is it didn't discriminate between what counted as male or female outfits, you could be equally over-the-top or classy either way. Of course, that might not be as easy to implement for a game like Dragon Age where clothing isn't merely aesthetic. Anyways, equality between the sexes for the PC is something I can really appreciate (okay, so Saints Row wasn't the best role model for equality in other aspects of the story, but whatever).

that's gorgeous, good find

I couldn't find anything non-front-lacing within that colour scheme and it still has a boob window, but it would be fine for the ball or the skyhold I suppose.

This new video shows Orlesian enemies, and imho their armor looks really good from what I can see

If she's thinking of taking up a sword and shield in that outfit, i'll make her my jester. Otherwise, I'll assume she's some sort of courtesan.

Your arguements are becoming a bit like tossing thin air at a wall, though. Not beneficial to anyone but amusing to watch.

She's a Black Mage.

That's such an unfair comparison though. Not only are you attempting to compare masculine vs. feminine, you're attempting to compare harsh vs. soft, light vs. dark, and two completely different styles of battle gear.

Something like this would be a much more fair comparison:
Arkanmage.JPG or 062d02720beac265bce8cbe0a8d659ae.jpg

I dont like either of Kefka's choices, and out of these two, I like Tris' s outfit. It looks more sexy to me.

I did my best.... Sorry. I actually really like the muted colours, simpler silhouette; I think the teal and olive are gorgeous.

I wouldn't choose the first image because I don't like the winged-out style, and I find it too bright.

What about this image, is it any better? 41826847af5f9f8ccb63b5703d16cc4d.jpg

I stand corrected. This beats the previous ones by far. :D She is awesome! If I doubled up, sorry on phone this time.

Good choice. <3 Admittedly, I didn't know who Tris was when I chose this photo.

I am just hoping that I can make my male mages look snazzy like Orsino-esque robes with bowties...yes I want to see bowties and lots of 'em.

I think characters should be able to look as sexualized or as prudish as their creators want them to be, and that limiting one will only create an ever increasing demand for the other. For a long time female characters were made to look super sexy because that was what appealed in the industry, with the advent of customizable characters though and the slew of main, practical dressing characters, we now see a new dynamic coming about where people are putting more and more pressure to squeeze out what is considered sexy appearance in favor of what had been a niche but needed demand. If bioware follows the trend it has for a few years, the next game will likely get rid of sexual or body appealing outfits all together to appeal to its now predominantly catered to tumblr fans sensibilities. The move however will simply create a new demand for sexy revealing outfits, and as more people are forced into the "less sexual, more practical" mold by more people, sexualized outfits will become the new empowering thing to see female characters in, while the other side is treated as the new "get in the kitchen" of outfit choices for characters.

Just my two cents anyway. All this shifting happened throughout the womans rights movement, and it will continue to happen forever. As long as one group is given absolute say in anything, people will dissent.

I'm going to give you this to read:
http://repair-her-ar...make-me-go-what
And here's a quote from that to illustrate just why JRPG styles would make no sense in DA:

Spoiler

If you want functional, yet 'feminine' armour, then, I'd advocate designs that cover all the important bits (no cleavage window, as that exposes your sternum, making a target of your heart and lungs, and no midriff exposure, as that makes a target of your vital organs). Check this beauty:

tumblr_inline_mgc54yse8k1rnp9q5.jpg
It accentuates the breasts indirectly, so the form is pleasing, but no edges pointing inwards. The ENTIRE torso is covered, making it believable as a functioning chestpiece. And BEST OF ALL, it could look the exact same on a male body, and would look just as awesome.

The only problem with the above is the heels, as those things are hard to run in (nevermind walk), but at the very least, they are wedges, allowing for no sinkage in dirt, or random tripping over one's heels. I would still get rid of them though, the outfit doesn't really need em.

I find that (and your discussion) more pornographic than if she were naked. Sex finds a way to express itself, and when something is so conservative it's only a matter time before that tension explodes.

Clearly, you lack an understanding of what 'pornographic' means. As for what you said afterward,

Armour is not meant to be sexy. It is meant to protect. And I'm not speaking in real world terms, but Thedas' terms. Armour exists in Thedas to protect. Part of roleplaying is understanding the rules of the world you belong to, NOT man-made rules, but rules of Physics, Magic and such. You may enjoy ignoring those rules, but the fact is it breaks immersion too much for most serious storytellers to allow it into a game. As for me, any game that deters immersion like that isn't worth my money.

If we want to argue why more revealing armour should be considered in gaming overall, fine, but as for why it doesn't make sense in Dragon Age, in the world of Thedas? The answer is simple. Armour is built to protect.

Kinda amazing that we've progressed as collective societies around the world so much that we can now dictate what people make women look like and what outfits are and are not acceptable for them to wear.

Not like those barbaric times where people forced women to wear what they found acceptable, and dictated what outfits are and are not acceptable for them to wear.

It's simply that whenever someone is obsessed with creating a kind of conservative image, it's usually (in my experience) over-compensating for some kind of past extensive sexual history or something like that. So my brain tends to equate that kind of emphasis with that sort of background, although it is not literally pornographic in the slightest.

Obviously, that might not necessarily apply to any or all here, but it's just my experience so that's how I feel about it.

If you had just said look at this armor, it looks cool and realistic, I probably would not have said anything. I probably would of said yeah sure,  whatever. But the way it was discussed it it felt like an extreme fixation on the female form, what with all the details regarding her breasts and so on, felt very much like hardcore objectification to me.

This isn't an argument about acceptable. It's an argument around "protect thyself from the pointy things". Why? Thedas says armour protects from pointy things. If you want a different aesthetic, find a different world, a different game. Especially when the games that do have "sexy armour", don't leave an option not to wear it either.

I honestly thought I had to for someone to take me seriously. When I saw this, all I went in my mind was "ooooh badass". Well, that and "Fashion touchstone: Lady Sif"
