See I never liked this argument. The reason why we don't see men in games running around in really skimpy armor is because a man's power is represented by is strength, whereas a women's power is represented by her beauty. People can argue all they want, but this is just the nature of who we are as human beings. A woman's greatest weapon is her sexuality. I know there are women out there who are really tough, I'm not denying they're existence. But let's look at Rhonda Rousey and Gina Carano. Can they beat up most men they cross paths with? Yes they can. Are they strong as hell? Absolutely. But no matter how tough those women are, men have and always will comment on how beautiful those two women are. Because that's what it comes down to for most guys.

This isn't meant to be insulting. I'm not saying all women in games should dress sexy, but I'm just trying to shoot down this whole thing where people say "Well if women wear skimpy armor, how come developers won't do the same for men?"

Wow wrong on so many points...I won't even bother . Yurk

Femshep's evening dress sucked because it was too tight for her (a dress should never pucker at the seams) and it had a zipper on the butt.  it was the only non-military outfit available for her, so if you didn't want to put her in it, she had to wear a uniform.  Broshep got an awesome leather N7 jacket.  Where's my N7 jacket?

And if you play a Dalish origin, you're forced to wear the tiny belly shirt at the beginning.  Even after I got better armour for myself, I had a hard time finding decent light armour for the rogues, and poor Leliana was stuck wearing it for half the game.

I can get not caring for the N7 dress, but both ME2 and 3 had the spacer outfit which wasn't a military uniform.

Frankly what I really dislike about the realistic armor arugment is that it's rarely realistic. Full plate was frankly not very useful and was never used for infantry, instead exclusively used for cavalry (which was made up of the upper class). In fact full plate armor had far less stopping power than cloth and leather armors used by the infantry. Truthfully there isn't any armor that would stop a lethal blow as a large sword to the gut area is lethal on every armor ever designed, instead it was designed to absorb glancing blows with the aid of a shield. As is plate armor would be terrible for it misses the three key points of armor, armor is not to stop a blow but to absorb it or reflect it, armor must allow for mobility on infantry and armor must be affordable. Seriously the way you actually accomplish that is via layering to absorb blows (so no underwear under your suit of plate), small amounts of metal to deflect blows in important areas, made out of light weight and durable material (read leather and cloth) and using cheap and abundant materials as opposed to metal.

That's a good point. It's pretty much impossible for a video game to do medieval armor in a completely realistic way. One of the biggest disadvantages of heavy armor was that the wearer quickly became tired and overheated while wearing it, and yet player characters in DA can wear them 24/7 and in fairly temperate climates with no problem whatsoever. If Bioware decided to implement something like this in game, such as giving heavy armor a huge penalty to mobility and attack speed, and requiring it to be removed occasionally, I think many players would be annoyed by this. It's just a break from reality we've come to expect and accept in such games. That's why I always roll my eyes when I see people demanding this game be more "realistic" - we always have to pick and choose what aspects of a game should be realistic and which we can afford to take more artistic license with.

Yeah... I pretty rarely see armor I'd describe as realistic, in fact I'd say that Cassandra's DA:I armor is probably one of the most effective armors currently in games as it actually meets those requirements. Most of the Templar and Guard armors are also a step in the right direction, though they are probably too heavy, they actually have leather joints (though for the record Meredith's armor is pretty bad, with the weaker plating in the gut).

I dunno if they'll meet your specifications but I've always liked:

The hotter the better. Video games could use stylists.

No thanks.

Probably the only genderbent character I have ever approved of.

I like utilitarian armor myself, but damn, I do love the winged hussar's armor (kinda like Cullen's armor I suppose):

There's also  a genderbent Mordred,Jack the Ripper,Francis Drake and Emperor Nero in the series.

Jeanne D'arc is also in it.

She is not a genderbent King Arthur. They just had to hide the fact she was a woman while she ruled. ^_^

Arthuria > Arthur

Arthuria > Arthur

She's still a genderbend *or rule 63 if you prefer* because King Arthur*in our world* is a man.

I prefer Rule 63 myself since it recognizes the character as its own person.

Unless...he was actually a woman and what happened in reality is what happened in that series, as in they covered it up!  :o

Gender equality is the biggest issue I have with it, personally. Games where males are almost always hulked up in three inch thick plate, while females run around in steel lingerie are bullshit. If the game is about stylism more than realism, fine, have both genders run around half naked, no problem. For example, Red Sonja had a chainmail bikini and thong, but her counterpart Conan had only a loincloth so it fits. But mixing the two up (and conveniently, this basically always means that females end up wearing much less) often makes the whole thing look silly.

On the other hand I don't think armor should strive to be 100% realistic. Otherwise the vast majority of soldiers would run around in ugly quilted armor and wield plain spears. But if the setting tries to be taken seriously, armor should look like something a soldier would want to wear. Recent RPGs like Dragon Age and The Witcher are good about this; not all the armor in those games is 100% realist, but they look close enough to the real deal to suspend my disbelief.

If you really believe this then your window on the world Is minuscule in scale, or you have watched too many afternoon casting talk shows.

It was kinda funny how all leather armor came right up to the neck for male characters, but women (like Leliana) had this convenient "stab here" scoop to the exact same outfit

Well I like it (Meaning Saber's armor), it's like armor + dress = amazing, well to someone like me who enjoys my outfits having more girly/feminine qualities.

Sadly we're so obsessed with sameness right now won't get it any time soon in a game like dragon age.  As things stand, putting both genders in traditionally masculine outfits or gender neutral is acceptable, but we're far from putting male players in traditionally girly/feminine outfits.

As such the push for same results in destroying traditionally girly/feminine outfits completely, and eliminating any attempt to really incorporate such traits.  So any women who enjoy more feminine/girly outfits are stuck with traditionally masculine and/or gender neutral outfits simply because women in suits is accepted, but men in dresses is not, and heaven forbid outfits be different based on the gender wearing it.

Instead of moving towards men being able to wear feminine/girly outfits, we're just completely eliminating traditionally feminine/girly traits entirely.  This is something I find very sad and disheartening.  I'm beginning to doubt women player characters will even be able to wear a gown to the ball...

Indeed, why aren't all the characters nunnified! I demand that all this excess of skin be censored eternally! Think of the children!

Seriously, when did video games get taken over by stiffs and hall monitors? Don't you guys have a city council meeting or something to attend?

I love me some fanservice from time to time but the impracticality of sexy armor usually leaves me side-eyeing. I'd like to see some awesomely practical armor though.

Since we're talking about armor, which doesn't do much good when it flashes a lot of skin?

Or maybe something a desire demon would wear...

You mean Chanel No. 5?

More seriously, I thought DAI was supposed to have more personalizable equipment than its predecessors.

I don't know the impracticality of Dragons blowing up castles and mages hurling fireballs across the sky at super demon monsters, or demi god men flying across the battle to slaughter endless minions single handedly, or to be near death and eat some random herb pump them up to maximum health again I daresay makes me relatively indifferent to the practicality of a hot looking outfit on a character.

Maybe that's just to me, interested in fun and entertainment though, what am I thinking.

Practicality is fun. Armor protects you from burns if you get hit by a fireball. Corsets don't.
