Those gladiators... were, um... slaughtered in the end.

Not a good example of "sexy" vs "practical".

Well, the way they were fighting in the show, they should have been slaughtered long before that.  Armies full of individual fighters (Especially naked ones) tend to falter against organized unit warfare, as the Romans were very good at, just ask the Gauls, oh wait...

I don't think they didn't have any armour fighting Roman legionnaires too. Spartacus had won several battles against vaunted Roman legions after all.

Oh, I'm not saying victories can't be won by inferior opponents - but there's no question that Spartacus' "army" was inferior specifically because it was so poorly equipped.  That they were superior singular fighters was about the only thing they had (and, of course, a leader who knew this).

The concept of five plucky adventurers wearing bikinis and fighting dragons is about a million times more ludicrous to me.

Emily Blunt in tears over Edge of Tomorrow body armour

British actress Emily Blunt sobbed in front of Edge Of Tomorrow co-star Tom Cruise when she first tried on the heavy armour she would have to wear for the duration of the shoot - because it was so heavy. The prospect of acting in the 85 pound (38.5 kilogram) suit for five months was a little too much for The Devil Wears Prada star and when Cruise asked her how she felt, she broke down. She explains, "The first time I put it on I cried. I remember Tom was there... to see how the exosuit fitting went... and I'm not really a crier, but I felt completely overwhelmed that I was gonna have five months of this. We put it on and he said, 'How are you doing...? You OK?'" Blunt burst into tears and said, "I wasn't really expecting it to be this heavy." But she adds Cruise managed the situation well, telling his co-star, "Come on, stop being such a wuss!" The actress, who also mastered Krav Maga and took gymnastics and sprint training classes to perfect her look for the sci-fi movie, insists she was OK after the brief meltdown.

@Star Fury:  I wouldn't consider modern men and women anything like what they would be like during a time when armor was relevant.

I don't understand why you have army in brackets, Spartacus' army was real and he had twice beaten two Roman legions. Crass even had to perform a decimation to lift morale of legionnaires.

Whether or not gladiators were actually much better fighters than legionnaires is up to debate.  Spartacus' leadership and military experience, along with Roman infighting, played their role.

Hahaha, killing a tenth of their own force to help lift morale... I'm glad we don't live in ancient times.

Judging by successes and military conquests of Roman Republic and then Empire, it worked. :)

Roman commanders believed in being both feared and loved by their men B) A decimation here, a promise of land and plunder there...

Well, I'm sure I'd be super motivated to make our army do better if there was 10% chance I'd die if we didn't, but I don't think I'd feel my morale was particularly boosted  :P Yay, I wasn't in the 10% that drew death by my own people! We'll win for sure, now!  ^_^ I don't think I could be a soldier, in any case, but that'd just be terrifying. I'm just picturing a Darth Vader type character choking every tenth stormtrooper, hahaha

Hell on his family life.  "Sorry, son, missed your soccer game again; had to force choke 500 of the 5000 troopers in the 513th Legion.  Five more legions to go this week, then a princess to interrogate (no biggie, she broke her NDA is all).  Let's get together this weekend. You know we'll have a good time then."

She is an actress and a celebrity. I'm not sure if that makes her representative of most women.

I'm sure if you could follow male actors through those 'boot camps' the producers of war movies put them through, some of their antics would be quite hilarious as well.

Oh look, my female inquisitor entering Val Royeaux in Orlais ....

*wakes up*

Nooo, thats Joan in "Entrance of Joan of Arc into Reims in 1429"

Beautifull painting. And that that guy.on the left, with winged helmet. Completly badass hehe ;)

Edit:  decent article, with good references, and a picture of what Joan of Arc's armour might have looked like.  Some of the comments are quite thoughtful too, especially on the 'boob plates' that would basically lead to your almost instant death!    http://io9.com/what-...wear-1502779338

That plus there is this painting of her, painted about 50 years after her death. I guess the author had a good amount of idea about the look of the female armor back then. Much more than we do, today.

Well, going by wikipedia, that's about twice as much as a full suite of plate armour would weigh

A lot of the slaves (most of them weren't gladiators) in Spartacus' rebel army would have been wearing armor that that had been looted or taken from dead soldiers. Anyone who was unarmored wouldn't have been so by choice. Most of them were Thracian, Gauls, or old remnants of the Cimbrian War (Germans), all of which were cultures that wore armor into battle so long as they came from a class that could afford it.

That's why I used a word sometimes. Emily Blunt is a Hollywood actress, thus she has to maintain a top physical shape. If she does complain about a heavy armour, what that says about normal women who don't torture themselves with exercises? Tom Cruise also didn't complain about weight of armour.

In video games I choose looks over substance with regards to armor, unless I am doing Hard Core or some similar setting. Where those stats matter.

In real life, I choose what makes sense for the occasion. I imagine if in battle, I would not want to wear a chainmail bikini if I was a woman, or a man.

That sword looks too big to be a 1 handed sword. She looks controlled by it more than she's controlling it. Should've been 2 handed.

I'm not sure what you intended with your post then. I might have missed the discussion but it seemed to me that you're making a point that women might find hard to wear heavy armor. Which would be supported by the fact Emily Blunt was overwhelemed by the massive (~40kg or more depending on the version) weight of the suit. Yet that's not the whole story. Blunt not only wore the suit but made everything that was expect of her. Tom Cruise talked about how if she did not do her own stunts they wouldn't be able to create Rita as they wanted to.

Blunt also said in interviews how it got easier with time to wear the suit and how she got used to it by wearing it for long periods of time.

So if anything, Emily Blunt in Edge of Tomorrow is a decisive YES for woman wearing heavy armors.

She wasn't wearing female armor. There was no female plate armor back then, because almost no woman ever wore armor. What she was wearing was the kind of suit of armor a guy would be wearing. Whether that it would be sensible to adjust the design for female knights is unknown, since it wasn't tested, and it was largely irrelevant to Jeanne d'Arc, because she didn't actually participate in active combat. Half the point of the armor was to be shiny and visible.
