That sword looks too big to be a 1 handed sword. She looks controlled by it more than she's controlling it. Should've been 2 handed.

The movie is based on Japanese novel "All you need is kill" by Hiroshi Sakurazaka, maybe a director was influenced by Japanese fantasy swords too.

You mean from the gifs I posted? She is wearing an exosuit which give her enhanced strength...  by the way, it's a sharpened helicopter blade!

Tom Cruise also didn't complain about weight of armour.

I wouldn't exactly call Tom Cruise exactly 'representative' either; he's got a beast of a build.

And he'd need it, too; Hollywood generally makes things heavier than they actually would be whenever they want something to look 'weighty' (e.g. the pulse rifles in Aliens).

I knew a handful of small (5' 5" or there abouts) men who went into light infantry; size matters, and when the load out seems meant for someone ~6' 3" + (and carried by mostly ~6' ) folks, you gotta work your ass off just to keep up.

Also, Tom Cruise spent two months with the team that designed the armor helping in the process. Not to mention he is extremely used to action and he also said this was one of the hardest films he ever did.

Anyway, all people have (and should) do is go watch Edge of Tomorrow and see Blunt in action. It's glorious.

I'd like to see her against a dragon.

I think this just kind of shows a failure to understand a lot of potential female (or male) gamers though. They care about what stuff looks like, it is absolutely essential, period. The art direction is just terrible, in every sense of the word, beyond just character armors, really. Stuff has to look good.

I'm a female. My friends are female. Numerous users on this thread are female. There are several prolific bloggers who post on this issue. The absolute majority of females that I have encountered have all been saying the exact opposite of this. They want armour equal to that of males, as an option at the very least.

I don't know where you're coming out with this BS armchair psychology of "all females want this because I personally want this", and I don't know why you've suddenly taken up the banner of representing every female in existence, but you clearly don't.

God. It reminds me of designers saying "no it's okay that all our females are wearing nipple tassels and a thong - those characters choose to wear those outfits!" to justify sexualising their entire female cast. It doesn't work then, and it doesn't work now.

She wasn't wearing female armor. There was no female plate armor back then, because almost no woman ever wore armor. What she was wearing was the kind of suit of armor a guy would be wearing. Whether that it would be sensible to adjust the design for female knights is unknown, since it wasn't tested, and it was largely irrelevant to Jeanne d'Arc, because she didn't actually participate in active combat. Half the point of the armor was to be shiny and visible.

Of course she needed it. She didn't participate in hand to hand fightings but she was always there on battlefield. Sometimes very close to the actual fighings. (hint: arrows and bolts can hurt too)

Thats how she got wounded twice.

So imo armor was quite relevant to her.

I googled the movie. The exosuit needs tuning, I think. Gives her enough strength to lift it but not to control it. That, or the blade needs to be lighter.... Maybe add some engravings on it?

I'd like to see some armor based on Byzantine designs.

I absolutely adore this one. The guy with the axe and shield is a BAMF.

I wasn't trying to say that the armor itself was irrelevant, I was saying that having no adjustments of the design to accommodate her physique was irrelevant, since she didn't have to be able to fight in that armor.

I thought it looked utterly awesome in every possible way. Maybe you should see the film, it might change your mind.

And I dare say she doesn't look like someone who isn't in control:

Yeah, he is my favorite as well. I believe that one is a Varangian in Byzantine armor.

The Byzantine Empire is the Roman Empire minus The Glory of Rome. Both those armors do look cool.

I love looking over the pictures from Opsrey books for great looking and varied historical armour. They're usually aimed squarely at modellers, so the detail tends to be excellent and pretty solidly based in fact:

No no, she looks awesome. It just bothers me how the sword keeps lagging. Or maybe it's just me. I'm used to seeing these.
Yes, I know the sword wiggles around, but it was heavier back then, and completely stiff, like blunted swords, but the athletes had to play with the same ferocity (as I understand it, the style wasn't as popular as others because of that).

Debatable! I'd recommend reading this book for an in-depth cultural analysis as to why the fall of the Western Empire isn't just a transition of culture and actually does represent a marked change between Byzantium and Rome.

That being said, the Byzantines did think of themselves as Roman.

Being really nitpicky here but if you're strong you're still better off with a smaller sword (in general, I get that in the film they are fighting weird aliens so who knows) the reason you see warhammer and battleaxes smaller than the tool version is because speed is much more important in combat than strengh.

I might be getting my math muddled up but I think the reason why speed is more important is because E = 1/2 m v2.

They certainly considered Rome theirs (Much to the annoyance of its various conquerors)

I knew speed is important, but never thought of the science side of it before. I guess it makes sense. But you'd still need strength to get speed, and given the suit doesn't give her enough strength to get speed, I say either make it a 2 handed sword or make it lighter.

It still depends on what you're fighting, the best example would be a golem, where the speed you're applying is concentrated into a smaller area, which would do less damage to the stone or metal, than, say a maul, where it could cause it to fracture.

I'm not sure what you intended with your post then.

I watched the movie mainly for numerous deaths of Tom Cruise.

Unrelated to thread, but what's in her blood? She said something about losing power along with loosing her blood in the vid. Is it the thing in her blood the reason she keeps "resetting"?

If it is.... I wonder if you can do the same to cure the warden's taint.

Mauls and axes (particularly the one handed sort) are criminally underutilized in movies anyway.

I will say it looked vaguely more like she was using that sword like a maul to me personally.

Yes. And you get the power by getting covered in a special alien's blood.

That's why I used a word sometimes. Emily Blunt is a Hollywood actress, thus she has to maintain a top physical shape. If she does complain about a heavy armour, what that says about normal women who don't torture themselves with exercises? Tom Cruise also didn't complain about weight of armour.

Surely this is not a serious post is it ?

of course if one were to wear an armour or battle he/she would have options in a real battle not a movie that requires certain look and feel for that movie ? and that thing she's wearing looks like a frigging robot suit not an armour. also women don't have to go toe to toe with the weight of armor just to prove they can be equal. there could be different designs with different materials more focus on speed as a fighting style etc....
