How to use Isabela effectively?

I really like having Isabela in the group, but she always feels so flimsy in combat and usually dies first.

I'm a vanguard warrior and prefer to play on hard.

I have Isabela fully specced in dual weapon, scoundrel and swashbuckler, and I set her behavior to defensive. I've set up her tactics to exploit my staggered targets and perform upgraded explosive strike as well as twin fangs on elite targets, but she never seems to do this, even though it's number 1 and 2.

She feels rather fragile and underwhelming in combat. It's almost like the game wants me to use ranged companions only.

Anyone useful tips on how to spec/use Isabela effectively would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

I am sort of in the same boat as you.  I haven't used Isabela since my first playthrough.  My current playthrough I am using her again and how I miss some of her banter.

Right now I am speccing her to use sabotage and it is helping my group with the bombs by ccing the crowd.  I only have backstab for her in the duel wield tree.  I am using her tree to help her survivability and I am looking to use subterfuge to leap away and cloak from danger.  So far it's working okay, I can't say that she is dealing her fair share of damage but it is nice to have the bombs thrown to control enemy mobs.  I wanted sabotage tree for my group but I didn't want Varric wasting his points in that tree.

I am also putting more points into Dex vs Cun.  I also put Con in for good measure to help her survive.  Whats interesting is that I set her to charge into a group of enemies with a rush then she leaps back because she is surrounded.  Reminded me of the vanguard in mass effect.

I also would like to know how to use Isabela more effectively.  I don't think setting her to defensive is a good idea for a rogue.  I'd use Stealth when surrounded by 3 people or something like that I haven't played DA2 for awhile so I don't remember her tactics and stuff.

Isabela is tricky because she can't take much damage, especially on higher difficulties. However, her high crit % and damage as well as several of her abilities give her a very high DPS. The Sea Legs and Experienced Hand passives from her Swashbuckler tree make her more useful both offensively and defensively. It also has the nice offensive ability: All Hands on Deck.

I've never had problems getting her to use the Twin Fangs ability with tactics. To benefit the most from her offensive capabilities you could try teaming her up with someone with other debilitating abilities such as the Hexes or Horror.

I actually lean rather heavily on the Subterfuge tree with Isabela. She can't take hits (even though she's always charging into the middle of a fight) so I try to focus on keeping her out of danger. If her tactics are set to use Stealth, Evade and Chameleon's Breath all the time, then the enemy will have a hard time getting a shot in. It also helps to have her target enemies who are attacking your other party members (ie, enemies who are distracted), especially characters who really hold aggro well, like Aveline.

But sadly, whatever you do, she'll always be the least effective party member in combat. Even Sebastian tops her, imho.

I was thinking about having her be heavy with Subterfuge to help keep her alive but I feel like she will be more pedestrian versus contributing to combat.  This playthrough I am doing with her is purely for the story, I have neglected her for a long time.  I will probably experiment with respect her throughout my playthrough.

I must say she's quite effective at crowd control with a combination of power and stun weapons. We just took out a varterral, and she stunlocked the bastard so hard I thought it was bugged ^^

Shore leave certainly comes in handy as well.

Really? Just make sure you pump up her weapons/armour with runes and she kicks arse.  The only place she has any real vulnerability is really heavy magical attacks. I always give her Swashbuckler, LOTS of stealth (Shadow) and a lot of the Duel Weapon tree as well. I find she does well in close in fighting (indoors, under ground) and that sort of thing. With stuff like the High Dragon, Sky Horror and big bosses she doesn't do so well. Tho to be honest I use her on 99% of my quests and I never have a problem with her getting hurt. Tho I always play as a Mage and have a few AOE spells that will usually protect her if she is being overwhelmed. She is my number two pick out of all the companions for most battles/quests.

Which runes would you suggest? I put a defense rune on her, and she still feels useless in boss fights. Especially against the final boss.

It depends on the boss. The High Dragon I will put fire resistant, the rock wraith, electric resistance, etc. For just running around (no boss fighting) you are correct with the defence runes.
